In the last three days it’s netted me copies of “Son of Soup”, the revised 3rd edition Programme Guide (got the 1st edition) and the rather rare “Scenes From The Dwarf”. Almost got everything Dwarfy in print now, just Robert’s “Man in the Rubber Mask”, to go. Of course, there’s still the Smegazine, only got one issue there. And BTL, Mike’s got quite a few of them though.

Yeah, “Scenes” shows up occasionally on Amazon Marketplace, and on abebooks as well. If you find it there, it’ll always be around the three quid mark, because various retailers seem to have settled on that as the price. I don’t think they tend to realise quite how rare it is (although part of me wonders if it’s ACTUALLY as rare as has been speculated all these years)…

Once I got a copy of Better Than Life off the intertubes for, like, six bucks (well, more like ten with shipping). It has both Rob and Doug’s signatures in it, which I did not know it had until I opened the book. (I remember that whoever shipped those books had two copies–one with the signatures, which was way the hell out of my price range, and one without–and I think whoever shipped them got them confused, so I accidentally got the one that Rob and Doug had signed. That’s the only way I can explain it, ‘cos all I knew about it when I ordered was that it was a first edition paperback.)

All in all, the internets have been very good to me. (Except whenever I try to find a copy of “Who On Earth Is Tom Baker”. I figure it’s only a matter of time, howeever, before I find a copy within my price range. The internet’s good that way.)

Wasn’t that only released a couple of years ago? Strange that’d be a rare item already, but I guess that’s the price you pay for being a dirty colonist.

If you have no luck finding the actual book, though, I highly recommend downloading his audio book reading from some dubious source or another, as it’s ACE.

It was released, I think, in like 1997, from all the information I’ve seen. And I can either buy it and have it shipped from the UK, and have the shipping cost more than the book itself, or I can wait until the day I have eighty dollars and get the one copy I can find on sale in the United States.

And I’ve also heard about the audiobook, but I’ve also heard it’s seriously abridged–as in, a good chunk of the book’s text isn’t included.

As to the stuff I ordered, it’s starting to turn up. The revised 3rd edition programme guide is noteworthy for the author’s comments at the beginning-

“This new-look edition is potentially a complete record of Red Dwarf on television- surely a good enough reason to take it to the counter and buy it- as, armed with a half-decent budget, the crew finally look set to take the big screen by storm. We say potentially complete because, of course, with the BBC’s recent record of finding worthwhile comedies it would be just plain mental to rule out Red Dwarf IX at some stage.”

I look up “Who On Earth Is Tom Baker?” on Abebooks regularly–like, I have the page bookmarked so I can try to look once a night. But they’re all out of my price range at this point. The cheapest copy they have is nearly eighteen dollars for me (but only eight quid and change in the UK? Man, the dollar’s taking a real beating against the pound right now), and that’s before all the shipping I’d need to get it across the Atlantic and most of the continental U.S., which would be, at the very very least, I think around eleven dollars (last I checked) and probably more like twenty.

But thank you for looking for me, and providing those links (I can probably make good use of that second one)! That’s quite thoughtful ^_^ .

I love the full version of the emohawk cockpit scene. It’s too long for the episode, but as a protracted Grant/Naylor comic discussion, at full-legth it’s up there with the best of them.

We tried to clear that video for use on the DVD (twice, actually – Series II, then Bodysnatcher) and couldn’t get it.

While the main film is pretty patchy, the music video Danny shot looked fabulous. And the making of had a lot of fun material in it. I still have my flyer from the time with the headline ‘The Bat Is Cack’.
