Well it’s the natural follow on isn’t it?

Being a bootstrap paradox doesn’t fit the mission of the show.

Although there is also the JFK episode where it turns out he’s there to prevent Jackie from dying.

Probably that then. Could have spared Sam all the faffing around with horses and red herring relationships for about a week that had no impact on that resolution. But still quite fun.

They did that quite a bit didn’t they? Made you think he was there for one reason but it turned out to be something else far simpler or more trivial.

There were some powerful episodes though. The JFK one, the one with the rape trial, the Vietnam episodes, the one with the electro shock therapy. All pretty impactful.

So Hawk and Chick from Bob’s Burgers does essentially exist?

Yeah, that’s a riff on Lone Wolf & Cub.

Lone Wolf & Cub is an amazing Japanese manga from the 70s that was hugely influential on loads of other stories, basically anything where you have a skilled protector shepherding a child across a dangerous environment. So stuff like The Road, The Last Of Us, The Mandalorian, all that stuff takes its cues from Lone Wolf & Cub.

It was also massively influential on comics too – Frank Miller cites it as a big influence, especially on his Ronin book, while it also inspired Road To Perdition which has a similar premise in a different setting.
