It feels like it could have been a leftover idea from Son of Cliche, the Freshers visiting a medical student mate who didn’t see the need to buy his own tableware when there’s all this stuff he can borrow.

Wasn’t it Mel Bibby’s suggestion that they might eat using medical utensils?

I have a vague memory of that from one of the documentaries. It turned out to be a great idea for the show, anyway.

I’m sure it was asked during the lockdown commentaries exactly why Red Dwarf would have on board a syringe for artificially inseminating cows.

Yeah, it was a Mel Bibby idea.

I dunno, I think you are meant to look at Red Dwarf as a ship that’s so big they find unusual things all the time that people had or things that were used for various reasons.

I mean, we do eventually see a cow in Pete so maybe it all checks out.

I continue to hope that the cow was meant to be as fake as it looked.

Given that Red Dwarf is meant to be a flying city, I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume it had decks for farming food.

I wonder how many of the 169 crewmembers were responsible for running an entire space-farm.

As a kid I tried to rationalize that it was a shit prop cow in-universe to act as bait. Now I think it’s probably just a shit prop.

Am I right in thinking the cow moos at some point? They’re drowning a live cow in curry.

Also why is it that liquidy? And why is Kryten throwing – what I’m assuming are – cabbage leaves onto the surface? Had the designers ever even seen a curry?

God, I’m beginning to see some real problems with VIII.

Kryten lost his memories of how to make a curry when they rebooted his brain. So it was all up to Lister.

I also believed for years that the cow wasn’t meant to be a real cow and was just bait.

Hollister does specify it was cow vindaloo. Three times.

He doesn’t specify if it was a real cow though, which it clearly isn’t.

It’s meant to be the size of a city, that doesn’t mean it’s the functional equivalent of one
