I’ve been on this collectors site a few times, and noticed that he had a very rare Red Dwarf book indeed, I’ve never come across it anywhere else. It’s called Scenes from the Dwarf – here’s a link to the front cover http://groups.msn.com/DrumjaysReality/reddwarfbooksandsmegazines.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=374

I just wondered if anyone on Ganymede has heard about it and could shed some light about it?

Additional – Yesterday i bought the Red Dwarf Offical Companion by Bruce Dessau for the unbelievable knockdown price of £0.01 plus £2.75 pp off amazon. It’s criminal quite frankly. Sadly Scenes from the Dwarf isn’t in stock otherwise I’d have grabbed it too.

This collector would be James, chairman of TORDFC.

I know Ian has this book, also one or two other people. One of which paid ?70 for his copy, it is very hard to get hold of I believe.

Yeah, Scenes is pretty rare – considered to be the rarest Dwarf book, I think, and one of the rarest pieces of mass-market merchandise (that is, excluding props and suchlike) of all. For a book that originally cost 60p, it’s attracted some amazing prices. Some people have paid ludicrously over the odds, others have managed to pick it up for a few quid by getting lucky online. The generally-accepted market price for it, considering its scarcity, is somewhere between about ?25-40.

On Fuchal, I had a page about it that showed the front/back cover and transcribed the (ostensibly by Rob and Doug, but the date suggests it was probably just Doug) introduction. I think we always meant to replicate it on G&T, but never got round to it…

I just put my name on the Amazon waiting list for it and paid about 6 quid.

Ooh lovely, I have one of those. ‘Tis a tiny book.

I got mine for ?3! It’s not only a nice piece of rare merchandise, but it’s also excellent to dip into to get a quick laugh. Might be an idea to get your scans and transcription on the site now that we’ve been reminded, Seb.

Yeah, definitely, I’ll dig ’em out. And yeah, as you guys have shown, you can find it online cheaply (I got my second copy, having sold the first when I was short of cash, for a few quid as well. The first copy had been given to me as a present by someone who found it in a charity shop), if you’re lucky with your timing. But I think ?30-odd is generally a fair price for it if you really want it. And I’m not just saying that because that’s what I sold it to someone for. ?70 is a bit much, though.

Got 2. Both for a fiver. Thought one had got lost in the post so went looking for another and then the first one turned up.

You sold your furst one to Ian, didn’t you, Seb?

There’s nothing on eBay or Abe Books, what time frame does does this book relate to? does it cover series I-VI or was it quite an early publication?

It came out post-VI. I think the introduction is dated December ’95, which makes it very interesting that it’s supposedly by Rob and Doug. It’s basically just a collection of scene scripts – I think there’s one from each of the six series, although offhand I can’t remember. When I get home I’ll find the original pages and we’ll put them up!

The word ‘mug’ springs to mind. Then I remind myself I don’t own it and openly weep.

Rob was definitely involved in all three script books, split or no split.

… which adds further to its intrigue value, I suppose…

    There are four script books.

But only one insufferable pedant named for a puppet, it seems.

“All three script books containing Grant/Naylor scripts”, obviously. Thought that went without saying. But only because it does.

I’d debate this anyway; Rob was solely involved in Son of Soup and that was after the split, so the date doesn’t have too much bearing on it. The writing credits (full names rather than Grant Naylor) on the front cover are identical to Scenes from the Dwarf too.

More accurately, he wrote the intros, etc. It would still have gone through the GNP process, which always involves Doug.

Oh, it did. But had I said it, I’d have been jumped on like mad, so I thought I’d help you out Andrew.

Thanks for this tipoff, I grabbed a copy from the seller on Amazon and it arrived today.

Great little book, which surprised me with how much stuff it contained that wasn’t broadcast.

That’s good to hear, I had no idea it even existed until 2 or 3 days ago.

Anything that would have been particularly exciting for Dave in the 90s to have read in the unbroadcast stuff?

There’s a mention of Marmite in Emohawk as well as an extended version of Rimmer’s haircut theory of warfare. And also a much longer version of the romance between Rimmer and Nirvanah from Holoship. Lots of little additional bits and pieces really.

(This line was presumably cut for over-explaining the joke.)

… And, having learned that lesson, Doug’s scripts never suffered from that problem ever again.
