It’s called Scenes from the Dwarf – here’s a link to the front cover http://groups.msn.com/DrumjaysReality/reddwarfbooksandsmegazines.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=374 I just wondered if anyone on Ganymede has heard about it and could shed some light about it? Additional – Yesterday i bought the Red Dwarf Offical Companion by Bruce Dessau for the unbelievable knockdown price of £0.01 plus £2.75 pp off amazon. It’s criminal quite frankly. Sadly Scenes from the Dwarf isn’t in stock otherwise I’d have grabbed it too. I know Ian has this book, also one or two other people. One of which paid ?70 for his copy, it is very hard to get hold of I believe. September 13, 2008 at 3:14 pm #84306 Seb PatrickKeymaster Yeah, Scenes is pretty rare – considered to be the rarest Dwarf book, I think, and one of the rarest pieces of mass-market merchandise (that is, excluding props and suchlike) of all. For a book that originally cost 60p, it’s attracted some amazing prices. Some people have paid ludicrously over the odds, others have managed to pick it up for a few quid by getting lucky online. The generally-accepted market price for it, considering its scarcity, is somewhere between about ?25-40. On Fuchal, I had a page about it that showed the front/back cover and transcribed the (ostensibly by Rob and Doug, but the date suggests it was probably just Doug) introduction. I think we always meant to replicate it on G&T, but never got round to it… September 13, 2008 at 3:23 pm #84307 Mr FlibbleParticipant I just put my name on the Amazon waiting list for it and paid about 6 quid. September 13, 2008 at 3:55 pm #84309 Jonathan CappsKeymaster I got mine for ?3! It’s not only a nice piece of rare merchandise, but it’s also excellent to dip into to get a quick laugh. Might be an idea to get your scans and transcription on the site now that we’ve been reminded, Seb. September 13, 2008 at 3:56 pm #84310 Seb PatrickKeymaster Yeah, definitely, I’ll dig ’em out. And yeah, as you guys have shown, you can find it online cheaply (I got my second copy, having sold the first when I was short of cash, for a few quid as well. The first copy had been given to me as a present by someone who found it in a charity shop), if you’re lucky with your timing. But I think ?30-odd is generally a fair price for it if you really want it. And I’m not just saying that because that’s what I sold it to someone for. ?70 is a bit much, though. September 13, 2008 at 5:10 pm #84311 BazParticipant Got 2. Both for a fiver. Thought one had got lost in the post so went looking for another and then the first one turned up. September 13, 2008 at 6:44 pm #84312 Jonathan CappsKeymaster You sold your furst one to Ian, didn’t you, Seb? September 13, 2008 at 7:57 pm #84313 Ian SymesKeymaster Yes. I have the f*cking furst one. September 13, 2008 at 8:48 pm #84314 Squeaky GibsonParticipant There’s nothing on eBay or Abe Books, what time frame does does this book relate to? does it cover series I-VI or was it quite an early publication? September 13, 2008 at 9:00 pm #84315 Seb PatrickKeymaster It came out post-VI. I think the introduction is dated December ’95, which makes it very interesting that it’s supposedly by Rob and Doug. It’s basically just a collection of scene scripts – I think there’s one from each of the six series, although offhand I can’t remember. When I get home I’ll find the original pages and we’ll put them up! September 14, 2008 at 12:13 am #84316 pfmParticipant > One of which paid ?70 for his copy The word ‘mug’ springs to mind. Then I remind myself I don’t own it and openly weep. September 14, 2008 at 11:49 am #84317 AndrewParticipant > ostensibly by Rob and Doug, but the date suggests it was probably just Doug Rob was definitely involved in all three script books, split or no split. September 14, 2008 at 2:04 pm #84319 Seb PatrickKeymaster … which adds further to its intrigue value, I suppose… September 14, 2008 at 2:20 pm #84320 Mr FlibbleParticipant Rob was definitely involved in all three script books, split or no split. There are four script books. September 14, 2008 at 3:14 pm #84321 AndrewParticipant > There are four script books. But only one insufferable pedant named for a puppet, it seems. “All three script books containing Grant/Naylor scripts”, obviously. Thought that went without saying. But only because it does. September 14, 2008 at 3:44 pm #84322 Pete Part ThreeParticipant >> ostensibly by Rob and Doug, but the date suggests it was probably just Doug >Rob was definitely involved in all three script books, split or no split. I’d debate this anyway; Rob was solely involved in Son of Soup and that was after the split, so the date doesn’t have too much bearing on it. The writing credits (full names rather than Grant Naylor) on the front cover are identical to Scenes from the Dwarf too. September 14, 2008 at 3:47 pm #84323 DaveParticipant > There are four script books There are four lights September 14, 2008 at 4:15 pm #84324 AndrewParticipant > Rob was solely involved in Son of Soup More accurately, he wrote the intros, etc. It would still have gone through the GNP process, which always involves Doug. September 14, 2008 at 7:27 pm #84325 Mr FlibbleParticipant ?All three script books containing Grant/Naylor scripts?, obviously. Thought that went without saying. But only because it does. Oh, it did. But had I said it, I’d have been jumped on like mad, so I thought I’d help you out Andrew. January 1, 2026 at 9:45 pm #315143 PodeyParticipant Copy on eBay currently for ten quid. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/146643906547 And on Amazon for less than a fiver. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Scenes-Dwarf-Penguin-60s-S/dp/0146002431 January 3, 2026 at 7:10 pm #315216 DaveParticipant Copy on eBay currently for ten quid. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/146643906547 And on Amazon for less than a fiver. Thanks for this tipoff, I grabbed a copy from the seller on Amazon and it arrived today. Great little book, which surprised me with how much stuff it contained that wasn’t broadcast. January 3, 2026 at 7:25 pm #315217 PodeyParticipant That’s good to hear, I had no idea it even existed until 2 or 3 days ago. Anything that would have been particularly exciting for Dave in the 90s to have read in the unbroadcast stuff? January 3, 2026 at 8:05 pm #315218 DaveParticipant There’s a mention of Marmite in Emohawk as well as an extended version of Rimmer’s haircut theory of warfare. And also a much longer version of the romance between Rimmer and Nirvanah from Holoship. Lots of little additional bits and pieces really.
