It was around the Series V T-shirt boom. (History books must surely mention this?!) The line at the time – when Dwarf fans were ‘smeggies’ – implying that it’s better to be Dwarf-related than extinct.

Of course, the term ‘smeg’ never had that ‘I belong to fandom’ meaning within the show itself (closest they ever got was ‘Dwarfers’ in Series VI). So when the show used a variation, the phrase was reversed – being smeg, as per the usual interpretations of the expletive, is worse than death.

It’s a rare case of art mirroring merchandise. See also: George Lucas 1983-present.

Can’t handle the smut, keep out of the slash section ;-) Took me ten years to build up the bloody courage to write a slash (especially without giggling inanely like a schoolgirl at the naughty words) but the reviewers on there kept badgering me so I thought meh, why not. No worries – the guys emailed me to say they’d like to use it for the series, which was really great. Pete did a fab amend on one of the lines too! Any amends/feedback you’ve got would be much appreciated.
