Barrie Booked News Posted by Ian Symes on 16th June 2026, 11:00 In news that’s not entirely unexpected but nevertheless very welcome, Chris Barrie is the voice of the Red Dwarf: Titan audiobook, which will be released alongside the hardback and ebook on July 16th. We’re looking forward to some competent (by design) impressions, now we have our man in place who’s utterly suited to the role. All rather exciting, frankly. There’d probably have been riots if it wasn’t Chris, but it’s never guaranteed that the most desirable option is the one that becomes reality. Thankfully this is yet another aspect of Titan that just feels right. The only way it could be more perfect is if it was released on a boxset of six audio cassettes instead a digital file, such as the one you can pre-order now from Audible. That listing confirms that the audiobook is unabridged, and gives a running time of ten hours. Beautiful. Here are some similarly reassuring words from other people: Chris Barrie said: ‘I am finding Red Dwarf Titan to be a very entertaining read. Recording any Audiobook is always a challenge with so many characters to cover, but Red Dwarf Titan, loaded as it is with laugh-out-loud lines and situations, is simply a joy!’ Co-author Andrew Marshall said: ‘I’m delighted that the portrayer of Arnold J. Rimmer himself, the fabulous multi-voiced Chris Barrie will be reading the audiobook of Red Dwarf Titan, and I’m certain that Rob would be too. In fact we would be noisily competing as to whom was the most delighted. Currently that’s me.’ One month to go until the first Red Dwarf novel in thirty years. One. Month.
Hopefully this won’t be the last Red Dwarf thing that Chris is involved with, otherwise it might be Barrie’s Red Coda.
Fantastic. Now if the BBC could just re-edit the audiobook into a series of 12 15-minute radio shows, we’d be all set. FYI the audiobook is also up for pre-order on Libro.fm, for those of us who trying to limit how much money we give to Amazon.
I’ll be reading the physical book exactly once then. His characters in the originals were exaggerated impressions and even his Rimmer didn’t exactly sound like his Rimmer, so there’s creative leeway there.

This is tricky for me. I read the original books dozens of times, and Last Human and Backwards a handful, too. But I never listened to the Audiobooks until around 15 years ago. They were brilliant. Chris > Craig > Rob as narrators, though. Anyway, I’m torn here. I’d probably get through the Audio quicker than the book…but I can’t imagine doing it that way around… Anyone else in a quandary?
Excellent news! Naylor’s probably writing a novel if he can’t get another special off the ground so I imagine Chris Barrie would narrate that too. Looking forward to Chris doing the audiobook version of the novel adaptation of the unproduced Red Dwarf Special 2 script, with different voices for the young and old Lister and Rimmer. As for Titan, I wonder what kind of voice Kochanski will have. We know she’s a proper character in it, unlike the Grant Naylor novels where iirc her only line of dialogue is two words, in Japanese.

I’ll definitely read before listening, but might do a bit at a time. Read a chapter or two, then listen to them. I’ve done that with a few books and it’s worked for me. I find I can enjoy the performance more without having to concentrate on the plot as much.
FYI the audiobook is also up for pre-order on Libro.fm, for those of us who trying to limit how much money we give to Amazon. From Canada all I am seeing is the TV soundtracks, so hopefully that changes. I know Quaderhorn is on Google Play as well.
I’ve actually been listening to the audiobook whilst reading the print book to help me get through a period of stress-related reading block and I found that, whilst it was difficult to concentrate on either alone, together they kept my mind focused. I’ll probably be consuming both that way.

Althoughe he’ll be writing Sin Bin Island 2 first… True, but I imagine he might be a good way along with that by now. I can’t remember his exact words when asked in a recent interview, but I think he said the publishers wanted to have Sin Bin Island 2 well before the end of this year for a 2027 release.
