We noticed this morning that an account called @RedDwarfTitan had started following us on X, and their one Tweet is pointing to a video. A video which will be premiering in less than two hours, with the tagline “JOIN THE CORPS.” over a very nice piece of artwork. Now, this might not be legit – we’ve had our fair share of heads-ups and embargoed news in the past, but this is not one of those cases – so we could be opening a Can of Worms of LAZY, INACCURATE journalism, but it’s too good an opportunity to have a watch party over on YouTube not to share this with you all and see what happens. Update: Well, what we got was a very brief teaser for the book, along with further confirmation of the release date. I’m impressed there’s any sort of video based publicity, really, and hopefully this very small teaser is a sign of marketing to come, because I do very much like the Space Corps angle.
Well, that was a nice little teaser I suppose. I do wonder what it would mean to someone who didn’t already know what it meant, though.
I mean, it was nice, and all, but I don’t think it was quite worth the build up. The countdown was longer than the live chat.
OK, I’ll say it: YouTube should make videos that are less than 1 minute long ineligible to be premieres.

I’m invigilating an exam and had to watch with the sound off. Has any other part of Red Dwarf ever used fuzzy VHS imagery in a somewhat nostalgic way?
Putting aside the upload method, that would have been hype as hell if we didn’t already know exactly what “Red Dwarf Titan” was. A month out from release though, a trailer really needs a bit more than that. Still, we did learn that the channel is in fact called “Groovy Funky Channel 27” and not just “Groovy Channel 27” as per Better Than Life. First crumb of new Red Dwarf lore! Ah, but if you’re not going to big it up, why make it a YouTube Premiere at all? You can schedule new videos without making them live events, right?
I always thought it was just Channel 27 and Rimmer added on the “groovy funky” part to mock it. But now it’s just called that. High Brow BBC4. Populist BBC2. Fuzzy Channel 5.

I agree that it’s a positive that they are using Youtube to promote the book. And it has whetted my appetite a little more, so it can’t have been all bad.
I was on a train at 11am, so I wasn’t sure what was visual effects and what was just crap wifi. For all that the addition of “Funky” to the official Channel 27 branding may be controversial, full marks for the “Join the Corps and See Space” slogan being carried over verbatim from Infinity.
it shouldn’t have even been groovy. Both words should have been Rimmer’s lame attempt to convey how hip the channel was.
red dwarf has got a very well established visual iconography, so it’s really fascinating to see a video like this… just not use any of that. To be clear I think this is a great call – the space corps branding in particular feels really fresh. whoever designed this got the one universe to the side vibe spot on.
Not that there’s a lot in this video but this suddenly feels a lot more real now that the marketing machine is spinning up.

Do you think Titan will finally explain the organisational relationship between JMC and the Space Corps? I’m hoping for at least 1 median length chapter dedicated to it. Even better/worse if “Star Fleet” gets mentioned. That could be a square in Titan Bingo.

The Space Corps is either a governmental or non-governmental organisation/authority that is responsible for regulating space/space trade whereas JMC is a private company that operates within Space Corps regs. Example. Rimmer and Lister work for British Airways that are governed by the Civil Aviation Authority

Example. Rimmer and Lister work for British Airways that are governed by the Civil Aviation Authority It certainly doesn’t, but there doesn’t need to be a new novel either. As there’s going to be one, I think it would be cool if it included little worldbuilding details like that, just like the old ones did. And it doesn’t need to just be details for the sake of details. You could definitely build some story around the relationship between the corporate and political sides to space travel (if that’s what the division is).

Love this little vid, tiny crumb of new Red Dwarf. Solar Operations Directorate, it says there. So join up now to that division of the space corp. Do it people. You can all be SODs I wonder if that’s anything connected to the solar destruction needed for the COKE ADDS LIFE event in the GRANT NAYLOR books universe.
I’ve got 2 expectations- It will feel like a Christie cosy mystery type story (I get that vibe with the different characters set up in the blurb The younger selves will lose their memories of the experience at the end and won’t have their original story arcs changed? Bit a bit sad if they can’t try to save Rimmer though.
I hate stories where everybody’s mind is wiped at the end. The Pokemon movie does that and it’s shite. White Hole gets away with it because it’s at least very funny

Rob co-owned Red Dwarf, so it likely was always going to be on him to get the 2nd into development. Aswell as any comics, animations ect ect. Now that’s not possible, I’m going to assume Doug has full say on everything Red Dwarf and who is able to write for it. Maybe if there was something in development before Robs passing it could happen. But otherwise this really could end up a one off.

I do own Hexagonal Hitch hikers Radio series and have embraced other works by other authors treading in Douglas Adams space. Even John Lloyd collaborated early on. With Dwarf I can except other writers too. Case by case. But the Novel form after Douglas died I couldn’t take that and I’m not sure I could accept a Rob Less continuation of this strand. It feels epitaph currently. I base my expectations mostly based on the level to which I enjoyed Quanderhorn. Which is good but not best of dwarf good. I am very much looking forward to it.
Yeah, I’m going to try to just enjoy this book as, for a long time, it’s something that we never really thought we would get. I guess it’s possible that Andrew Marshall and Doug will keep in contact and could discuss completing something else, but I don’t really expect anything like that to happen.
