April 30, 2008 at 11:50 am #123048 DaveParticipant They couldn’t afford Paul Darrow. April 30, 2008 at 12:13 pm #123053 Pete Part ThreeParticipant If you book him, he will come. April 30, 2008 at 12:37 pm #123057 Seb PatrickKeymaster It’s not a huge stretch to imagine that he’ll simply be playing an older version – either relating the entire story as one big flashback, or in some kind of epilogue sequence… April 30, 2008 at 2:54 pm #123061 JamesParticipant At least it’s not Leonard Dicaprio.. April 30, 2008 at 3:01 pm #123063 pfmParticipant Nimoy’s appearance is integral, he’s not just bookending the movie, it’s more than that. Trek is delving into the realm of time travel once more. The whole story has pretty much leaked out but I’m not looking at it. It’s not out for another 13 months! April 30, 2008 at 6:06 pm #123070 Ben PaddonParticipant FUCKING TIME TRAVEL. Because that’s all Star Trek is now, apparently. April 30, 2008 at 11:50 pm #123072 ChrisMParticipant Yeah, I quite like the time travel stories, but it’s being way overdone in Star Trek. May 1, 2008 at 2:36 am #123073 peas_and_cornParticipant Look, we just need to go back in time and use borg nanoprobes fired out of a deflector dish on the back of a particle beacon with the trans phasic polarity set to the same frequency as the polaron gravometric tachyon time phenomenon. May 1, 2008 at 2:42 am #123075 Jonathan CappsKeymaster Yeah, time travel in Star Trek usually blows. I’ve always preferred the exploration of the Universe and discovery of stuff and shit. Then again, despite my love of Lost, JJ Abrams has completely failed to impress me in anything else he’s made. May 1, 2008 at 8:29 am #123078 BazParticipant >I?ve always preferred the exploration of the Universe and discovery of stuff and shit. And the hot alien babes. May 1, 2008 at 12:14 pm #123082 cliffParticipant mmmmmmmmmmm seven of mine!. May 1, 2008 at 12:19 pm #123083 cliffParticipant >I?ve always preferred the exploration of the Universe and discovery of stuff and shit. ….well it can’t be as bad as ‘Deep Pan Nine!…..soap opera in space!. May 1, 2008 at 12:22 pm #123084 DaveParticipant Deep Space Nine was the most interesting and engaging Star Trek ever got. May 1, 2008 at 12:32 pm #123085 John HoareParticipant Deep Space Nine was the most interesting and engaging Star Trek ever got. Fuck yes. And, as is sometimes forgotten, the funniest too. May 1, 2008 at 12:35 pm #123086 NakrophileParticipant DS9 was the best Star Trek by far. One thing that does kind of bother me about Roddenbery is how much he refused to deviate from the ‘Starfleet = living gods’ thing he had set up. I love DS9 because it challenged that. Anyway, even though I have rather large reservations about this new film, I won’t admit that the trailer doesn’t make me happy. I just hope it isn’t filled with lots of cool and witty dialogue to be hip. Ugh. May 1, 2008 at 1:23 pm #123088 cliffParticipant and there is always the temptation (as with ‘Enterprise’) to make things look too modern when there suppose to be pre Kirk….time will tell. May 1, 2008 at 3:23 pm #123099 pfmParticipant I read a description of the new bridge saying it DOES look like the classic bridge but as though the classic bridge was actually built for real with today’s tech. Abrams keeps mentioning the retro/modern balance. Personally I hope they don’t make the film feel too restricted by thinking about Trek canon all the time. May 1, 2008 at 5:42 pm #123107 ChrisMParticipant I agree with that. I want the film to fit in legitimately with the series time-line (original and spin-offs) but it’s a good idea that it fits in with our time-line as well. A lot of the tech in the original show looked way too tacky, with the big colourful buttons etc. I guess it could be argued that it became fashionable to later create tech in a cheesy style over uptodate technology, like those campy 60s series… but yeah. It’s ok that this version is different. No doubt it’s been refitted over and over again in the time period between this film and the series anyway. The Enterprise was decades old by the time period of the original series. May 7, 2008 at 2:25 pm #80103 cliffParticipant ……………….No,No,NO!……………..we gotta have the big buttons!, how can you have the Enterprise and it look conpletely different inside?, if the idea is to legitimately fit it in with the time line then how can you make it fit in with ours aswell, and they betta have the original bloody uniforms too. ahhhhhh i give up. Cliff is is his box!. May 7, 2008 at 3:39 pm #80104 Ben PaddonParticipant I think this is a partial reboot more than anything else. May 7, 2008 at 3:49 pm #80106 John HoareParticipant Besides – do you put continuity above all else? I would say no – and in this case, I think there’s more to be gained through updating the look than through trying to take into account the look of the 60s show. And I love the look of the 60s show – but I don’t think it’s appropriate here. As much as anything else, I don’t think studio execs would greenlight the movie it if the production team said “Oh, yes, this multi-million dollar film – we want it to look a bit more simple technology-wise than the 60s series. Is that OK?” May 7, 2008 at 3:51 pm #80107 pfmParticipant > and they betta have the original bloody uniforms too While they’re not exactly the same they are completely faithful to the TOS (oh look I said ‘the’ TOS, that’s just as bad as saying ‘ATMOS systems’ That’s even worse than people who say ‘Tannoy’ or ‘Sellotape’ when they should be saying ‘the Post Office’ and ‘the Spastic Society’…) May 7, 2008 at 4:44 pm #80031 DaveParticipant >While they?re not exactly the same they are completely faithful to the TOS (oh look I said ?the? TOS, that?s just as bad as saying ?ATMOS systems? The HIV virus. May 7, 2008 at 8:34 pm #80035 Danny StephensonKeymaster BIOS system May 7, 2008 at 10:47 pm #80036 AndrewParticipant Fucking ‘PIN number’!!!!!!!! May 8, 2008 at 3:56 am #80028 peas_and_cornParticipant and connected to that, ATM machine. May 8, 2008 at 7:30 am #80112 Pete Part ThreeParticipant DVD disc Argh, make it stop. May 8, 2008 at 11:20 am #80113 cliffParticipant As much as anything else, I don?t think studio execs would greenlight the movie it if the production team said ?Oh, yes, this multi-million dollar film – we want it to look a bit more simple technology-wise than the 60s series. Is that OK?? I do see your point, it’s a catch-22 really, it could look too modern but to look exactly as the 60’s series did would not really be engaging(ha!, engaging..oh dear). Still that Ds9 episode where they went back to the old enterprise was well done and looked great…..ah, time will tell. May 8, 2008 at 12:35 pm #80116 DaveParticipant For DS9 they built part of the bridge and matched to existing footage, whereas for the mirror universe episodes of Enterprise they built the whole thing. My guess is the set will be bigger and more detailed but the Captain’s chair, red railing & Spock’s viewer thing will be unchanged. May 8, 2008 at 1:47 pm #80119 John HoareParticipant You can get away with that for a TV show – the budget is less, and it’s easy to say “it’s for the fans”. Moreover, the DS9 episode was a specific anniversary thing. But for an expensive movie which either widens Trek’s audience or fails utterly, other considerations come into play. Still, yeah, I’m sure they’ll try and incorporate *some* of the look of the 60s show. It’ll be interesting to see how far they take that. May 8, 2008 at 9:24 pm #80123 Danny StephensonKeymaster I imagine a lot of the sound design will be used as a nod to the earlier series, a la Star Wars. May 8, 2008 at 9:26 pm #80124 Danny StephensonKeymaster Star Trek Fact #98,757,474: The sound effect for the opening of the main bridge doors was simply a piece of paper being pulled from an envelope… May 9, 2008 at 10:06 am #80129 cliffParticipant …….thats a very squeaky bit of paper then! May 9, 2008 at 10:08 am #80128 cliffParticipant …that’s cool, i love little bits of info like that……i’ve exhausted the ‘key down the piano wire’ doctor who fact…now i can wow em all!.
