Was the cocktail umbrella fan service?

Also, unless someone can demonstrate as many scenes of other cast members being knocked out or offline then maybe they inadvertently had a point?

Just not putting Robert in the suit would be one way to mitigate its impact on his health. If he happens to get a line he can just shout it in from off screen.

Pretty sure they laughed at Mr Rat more than any other scene in the show.

It’s been too long to remember my reactions to the BBC era on my first viewing, but I remember losing my shit over Mr. Rat the first time I saw Skipper.

Did I just click on the Gallifrey Gals thread and find actual chat about the Gallifrey Gals inside…?!

Not sure if other people have this, but when I watch Red Dwarf or other comedies alone, I’ll laugh at the very funniest stuff, but also tend to laugh whenever I need to pause or get up to do something, as if having my attention and immersion distracted helps me appreciate how the last thing that happened to be said was pretty funny, but would have gone unlolled and taken for granted otherwise.

So if I made a YouTube reaction channel, I’d have to drink a lot of water and take lots of pisses to give value.

I was pissing myself the first time Mr. Rat came on screen. If that’s fan service then give me fan service.

It only would have been fan service if Mr Rat sat there doing nothing.

Mr Rat made me laugh really hard & then the gay panic bit sucked all the laughter back into my body like a vacuum cleaner. But I still love him

I’d say it was more bestiality panic than gay panic. Which is a much more reasonable thing to panic about.

You know, people gave me shit on here when I said that “Lister wakes up horrified after dreaming about kissing Rimmer” in Blue had Gay Panic undertones, but at least Rimmer is human.

I dunno, Lister was fine with shagging the GELF until he realised it was played by a bloke.

    Kissing Rimmer Panic is valid.

It is, which is why my argument back then was that the gay panic element was subtextual.

Of course Lister finds Rimmer especially disgusting, but the audience don’t feel that way about Chris Barrie, especially when he’s kitted up as Ace. A 90s comedy audience have however been trained to find the image of two men kissing inherently comical, gross, or both.

So even if in-universe “that was another man” had nothing to do with Lister’s disgust (he did gleefully kiss Petersen after all), I do still feel like Doug and Kim Fuller were at least partly keying into that trained reaction when they wrote in a “2 men kissing played for laughs” scene.

Side note: Duct Soup and Blue actually make a neat little “No! I am NOT into men! … unless?” double feature.

And who can forget Bobby’s impression of their immediate post-kiss reaction

Yeah, except that’s not what’s happening there. He’s remarking about how when he’s done plays or things where “two blokes do a kiss” they always reacted like that but says Chris and Craig didn’t.

Either way I’m outraged that anyone could possibly think of suggesting that Craig and Chris, two heterosexual men with an often antagonistic working relationship, were anything other than profoundly sexuality excited at the prospect of kissing each other on-screen.

Plus, you can see the full take of the kiss on the documentary anyway and they definitely don’t do that. I’m revoking your G&T license.

On an unrelated note, is it entirely too late to fill Red Dwarf with lesbians?

Just watched their Skipper ep before work. Kat’s almost rictus-grin laughter at Mr. Rat was brilliant.

As an aside, despite Skipper being a pretty good episode overall, an example of ‘over-explaining the joke’ stood out:

Would be much funnier if Lister just gives him the death stare, the concept has been well-established at this point, so the audience will have mentally filled in that response without him having to say it.

What exactly is the fan service in Kryten doing nothing supposed to be? A DNA reference?

There isn’t any. It’s just throwing out negative buzzwords to say something is shit when you don’t actually have anything to base it on

That would be my comment that you’re all slagging off.

This is the thread in question

I stand by my opinion (and that’s all it is; my opinion). Also note that I never said that the scene was “fan service”, so I would greatly appreciate people not putting words into my mouth. Ta.
