I hate their comment section so much. Kat says that Chris missed Series VII because he was doing Tomb Raider, which is evidently something she’s been told and assumed to be true. The first Tomb Raider film was 2001.

I believe that they watch the “Making of” documentaries on Patreon so they’ll hopefully come out of the other side of that with a more accurate idea of the context. I think Doug mentioned the “wild horses couldn’t drag me back” quote in it?

Chris Barrie couldn’t appear in most of Red Dwarf VII because the filming dates clashed with the filming dates for Back to Earth.

Chris Barrie missed most of series VII because he was trapped in Angelina Jolie’s fridge.

Once G&T is back on Twitter someone share to them the Dwarf Facts hashtag and watch them believe them all.

Chris Barrie missed most of Red Dwarf series VII because he was busy filming Red Dwarf: The Movie.

I have seen people saying the Tomb Raider thing in the comments during this series so that is where she got it from.

I don’t know about you but I think Red Dwarf would only be improved if every episode opened with 8 minutes of Hollister recapping what happened last week.

I should just ignore the YouTube comments anyway (as should Mx Kat eye em oh) but the people putting thin-veiled spoilers are the worst.

So according to the trivia heads in the comments, the psychiatrist who tests Kryten was played by original Kryten David Ross! Not actor Andy Taylor as Google claims.

Also, the angry anti woke fans in their comments are already preemptively angry about them potentially not liking Krytie TV – with one growling “let’s see if they can stop themselves going into little girl mode long enough to remember its just comedy” etc

Again, I’m enjoying the new perspectives that come with watching this stuff completely fresh. Even watching series VIII on broadcast, I knew about the prison stuff from the trailers – so I would never even think of the opening of BitR1 initially appearing to be a flashback.

My main memory of anticipation for bitr 1 is the little picture it got in the Radio Time’s listing for that day’s…it was bbc1 wasn’t it? Or 2?

I remember tuning in somewhere that was debuting the trailer (the one with the prison ID parade lineup), it might have been The Big Breakfast.

I remember seeing the trailer (had it recorded so watched it over and over), I also remember them showing the “sleeping todger” scene on breakfast TV the same morning as a preview. I think I’d also seen pictures from the series in BTL beforehand… I feel like I knew an awful lot about the premise, going in, anyway.

I don’t think I saw a trailer somehow. I saw pictures in the Radio Times but I think I was expecting their cell to be the new bunk room design.

My memory is seeing the trailer directly after (or before) Parallel Universe Remastered aired, 3 days before VIII started.

I would never even think of the opening of BitR1 initially appearing to be a flashback.

It now feels like Doug reworking Last Human’s enigmatic prison prologue, only shit.

no I don’t think I saw that trailer at the time. I was doing GCSE’s though.

Oh man, one episode in and they’ve already zeroed in on all the things wrong conceptually with Series VIII.

I’m not sure why they think the nanobots should have created a duplicate of Lister, but thinking about the nanobots potentially recreating the old crew without their remains actually made me realise: the absence of a second Kochanski isn’t such a big plot hole in the grand scheme of things. They just chose not to create a Kochanski because they already have one.

This also reminded me how blatantly Kochanski is dropped as a protagonist in BitR Part 1. Lister, Cat and Kryten all get followed to at least one scene after they get apprehended and split up, but Kochanski just disappears.

It’s odd that the opening episodes of VII & VIII both feature gratuitous exposition about the size/shape of the ship changing between series, as Doug consciously struggles to justify creative decisions in-universe.

At least Red Dwarf actually looks different when they wanged on about it changing shape, Starbug is identical to before and yet we’re meant to believe it now has miles and miles of service ducts as well as that weird big hanger thing they’re walking through in Tikka. It’s difficult enough to square what we see on-screen with the size of the model prior to series 7 but after that it’s ludicrous.

Of all the continuity stuff that doesn’t quite work on the show, the size of Starbug compared to everything that’s meant to be in it is the only one that truly gets on my tits.

The relative scaling of Starbug model to interior space is one of the many struggles with the show, realistically even the earliest iterations we see of the inside space in the III-V era doesn’t really look like it should fit. VI begins to stretch the limits to, or well frankly, beyond breaking point.

    And VII is just batshit

I always took Kryten’s line, “The altercation with our future selves caused dimensional anomalies which have expanded the cargo deck by 212%. We should ascertain that the new structures are stable”, to mean that it was supposed to be TARDIS-like in VII.

Doesn’t Ace’s ship somehow manage to dock inside Starbug in “Stoke”?

It feels like Doug wanted to resolve the “who stole Red Dwarf?” thread from VI properly and hence resisted reintroducing the mothership right away, but didn’t want to have them confined to Starbug/struggling to survive again and hit upon “the paradox makes it bigger on the inside”.

I was watching so much Star Trek around VII time that I just used to let this go unchallenged. Robot said ‘anomaly’ and some numbers, he knows what he’s talking about, just let it flow over you and carry on.

    STARDIS-BUG

    #295630

Yes, I’ve ranted about Stardisbug many a time and will continue to do so. VII would have been much better if episode 1 was Use the Time Drive to Recover Red Dwarf and then things like Duct Soup would at least make sense. It would also have stopped VIII from happening the way it did.

This one went down a lot better for them. I winced when they mentioned it’s a 3-parter and they don’t want 3 episodes of all the crew being back, though…

    very funny

my favourite thing about these gifs people post is being able to focus on things you wouldn’t normally, like how short Rimmer’s hair is and how Kryten looks like his brain is still melted

Okay, so they’ll love the gang rape joke!

I do wonder what was going through Doug’s head when he thought “I know, let’s start the new series with a flash forward – Rimmer is back, and he’s grumpy with Lister for some reason! Lister is teasing Rimmer to try to get him to talk to him, but we’ll find out why he’s grumpy later. Just a fun little hook to open the story with!” and then he followed it up with “Oh, by the way, the reason that Rimmer is grumpy is because Lister had him gang raped. But it’s OK, Rimmer raped several women in the previous episode so he deserves it”.

    #295668

Wait, so if that’s what erstwhile means, isn’t Rimmer jumping the gun a bit by assuming she’s already dead when the whole point of the exercise was to check if it’s Babs or the Sim? I mean, he was right, but still…
