That would be my comment that you’re all slagging off.

This is the thread in question

I stand by my opinion (and that’s all it is; my opinion). Also note that I never said that the scene was “fan service”, so I would greatly appreciate people not putting words into my mouth. Ta.

This is very regrettable indeed, and I wish it hadn’t happened, as it means we’re going to have to go back and redo all the memes with the correct wording.

Oh God I just imagined an infinitely looping GIF of that original scene and briefly glimpsed hell.

Also, kinda sad we’re about to reach the end of GG RD reactions…!

    #302763

Been away so finally watched their Promised Land reaction, which they fittingly really enjoyed and got a lot out of. Also made me realise that I enjoy this episode more every time I watch it, I think I might prefer it to Skipper now. Lister telling Cat to “back the smeg off” when he’s taunting Rimmer for being gets me every time, it’s so much more underplayed than the moonlight scene but feels utterly genuine.

I like Lister’s reaction to it, but the Cat side of the confrontation feels laboured to me. His level of shittiness just seems way out of proportion. It’s like his “droopy ass titties” rant from Timewave – just ramped up to 11 purely to satisfy the rest of where Doug wants the scene to go irrespective of how earned or consistent it is.

when the legend becomes fact…though I suppose to be fair I never said “fan service” was a verbatim quote, just my vague memory of what I read. Probably my own opinion creeping in as I suppose I could see it as “fan service” nostalgia of the previous times Kryten pulled funny faces, though I actually like fan servicey comebacks of things that (to me) were funny and still are funny.

They’re now doing Blackadder! Looking forward to when they reach Nob & Nobility.

Hot take, but I’m a The Black Adder purist. I enjoy the later stuff for all the great wit (although each iteration is less funny than the one before), but the original has a unique charm to it.

The first series is definitely going for something a bit more ambitious but I just wish he wasn’t doing that annoying voice.

I was going to put this in the comments for either the Blackadder commentary DwarfCast or the Mastermind G&TV, couldn’t decide which so I’ll leave it here instead: Blackadder is one of the specialist subjects on Mastermind this coming Monday.

Oh good, been checking on and off to see if the Slackbladder watch had started.

    Someone lure them into Brittas.

    #304214

No, I think they should watch The Young Ones after Groutfladder.

My small town’s theatre company is doing “Blackadder Goes Forth” next month, whatever exactly that entails. I don’t really need to see them doing that, but would be interesting if they had a crack at Red Dwarf. Not as big a market for that here as war remembrance stuff though.

I stumbled upon this stage production of Marooned a long time ago.

Oh, brilliant. Of course, when I was in theatre, all they ever wanted to do was Pride and sodding Prejudice. And that was on the good days. Normally you’d get an Anton Chekhov “comedy”, or as I like to call him, the undertaker of laughs.

I kind of enjoy smart Baldrick more than dumb Baldrick, even if sometimes his stupidity is genuinely inspired: they are indeed “some beans”.

    #304298

The first Baldrick is definitely more versatile – for every genuine cunning plan he comes up with, there’s a “he’ll turn into a seethe”.

I was watching the Blackadder Rides Again documentary the other day and Tony Robinson picks that out as his favourite moment for Baldrick in the first series.

It also makes the point that The Black Adder is often more like a collection of sketches than a traditional sitcom, and I think that’s fair.

I liked that Blackadder, Baldrick and Percy had this camaraderie going. Unlike the later Blackadders, the original actually needs other people and is desperate for any sort of attention. Baldrick consistently takes advantage of him to move up the social ladder. Percy and Baldrick have their own friendship. They make a nice set of underdogs.

    #304319

Yeah, for all the lack of really good jokes, the first series does have its own vibe which has a lot of potential: the three of them against the world.
