I mentioned this on a podcast about Terrorform. IMDB, TV.com, etc all mentioned it as being an unused Doctor Who model. But they all used pretty much the same wording which I thought was dubious. So I asked on the official RD forum and nobody knew anything about it being true (nobody who posted that is), so I took it as an internet inaccuracy.

I’ll need to go back to the DVD but rant there concept designs and/or discussion for this monster ‘as’ a Red Dwarf design?

If memory serves me, it was mentioned in the Red Dwarf Companion book from 1992.

It’s a great design anyway. In some ways it’s a shame we never saw more of it… yet it fits the premise better that we didn’t.

I actually found my eyes more drawn to the Starbug models in those pictures though. I know we’ve seen them before, but they’re really excellent with that weathered look and all. And I didn’t know they splashed orange paint on one of them for effects shots!

The FX boys talked about it at DJ. They also showed a picture of a monster – which may or may not have been the original intent for the self loathing beast, I’m not sure – which ironically looked quite like the version of the Destroyer that was actually used!

Wasn’t the head of the monster planned to be used for the Despair Squid?
