I’ll start, because that’s how this sort of thread always works. Keep up. (My lookalike font is a bolded, mildly blurred Courier New, in case anyone wants to run with this template. The minor blur helps the added text look less conspicuously sharper than the original image.) When it is actually a banger. One of my bands once did a “Stars in their Eyes” all-dayer where we did a set of Terrorvision songs, Oblivion being a choice cut. I know, I’ve done it myself,” gets a laugh for literally no fucking reason? January 18, 2024 at 8:39 pm #292095 Quinn: Clochebusters World ChampionParticipant I think it’s the delivery January 18, 2024 at 8:48 pm #292097 Frank SmeghammerParticipant Lots of Series X moments get big laughs where they shouldn’t be, I’ve always put it down to the audience generally just being extremely excited about new Dwarf. I remember laughing at the moose gag from Trojan for weeks, giggling like a little girl. On reflection, it’s a pretty good joke but not what I made it out to be when I first saw it. It was a pretty nice time to be a Dwarfer looking back. Series X doesn’t touch the bubble but it definitely lives in a sweet spot for me January 18, 2024 at 9:04 pm #292098 JenuallParticipant I do think the delivery and escalation of the ongoing moose stuff is pretty bloody good to be fair. But for sure it gains some bonus goodwill by riding that wave of “oh fuck yes it’s new Dwarf and it’s not shit!!!” January 18, 2024 at 9:18 pm #292100 Quinn: Clochebusters World ChampionParticipant The moose gag is genuinely fucking brilliant. But it’s one of those ones that hits it’s hardest the first time you hear it. After that, knowing what it builds to, it’s never going to be the same January 18, 2024 at 10:24 pm #292103 DaveParticipant I always found the moose gag to be a bit of a weird one – because it’s definitely very funny (as much due to the performances as the material), but at the same time it also feels like a fairly generic joke that you could plug into pretty much any sitcom rather than it feeling particularly Dwarfy. January 18, 2024 at 11:29 pm #292107 Quinn: Clochebusters World ChampionParticipant Plenty of jokes in Red Dwarf (particularly early series Holly) or non-Dwarfy jokes and just repurposed gags and sketches from elsewhere. Then later on there’s Craig stand up type gags. Whilst it annoys me when Red Dwarf is broad, straight up jokes aren’t an issue I don’t think. January 19, 2024 at 10:05 am #292116 Ian SymesKeymaster I feel like I’ve said this many times before, but the moose scene is greater than the sum of its parts because of what it represents – first time back in front of an audience for 12 years, we had no idea whether it was going to be any good, and along comes a series of jokes that are not only funny but also tell us something about each individual character and how they interact. Culminating in Cat getting a laugh just from entering the room, in anticipation of what the joke was going to be. Proper character comedy, back again. The first confirmation that not only was Red Dwarf making a comeback, it was actually better than it was immediately before it went away. January 19, 2024 at 10:19 am #292118 DaveParticipant I wonder if it was intentional to front-load Trojan with that, for exactly that reason. Like it needed a reintroduction of the characters and a big guaranteed laugh early on to make you feel comfortable with the show again. January 19, 2024 at 10:39 am #292119 International DebrisParticipant The moose bit definitely feels like a reintroduction joke, and it’s all the better for it. As Ian says, the moment Cat simply walking into the room gets a big laugh, you know Doug has actually written this as Red Dwarf rather than a random wacky comedy with the same actors. January 20, 2024 at 4:31 am #292141 MoonlightParticipant I remember crushing Trojan down to fit on my little sansa mp3 player so I could watch it again on the bus (I had a LONG bus ride) to/from high school. I’m pretty sure I watched it like 5 times in the first week of it being out. January 20, 2024 at 8:41 pm #292158 Frank SmeghammerParticipant I’m certain Trojan and the moose joke was frontloaded like that for good reason and it worked. But conversely, the very first gag of the show being the “you lazy fat pig” line made my blood run cold with fear that Series X was going to be shit. About as unfunny as the show has ever been. January 20, 2024 at 10:00 pm #292165 International DebrisParticipant Ah, well, Doug had to set up the ‘shit opening scene’ trend in X to make the good one in The Beginning stand out more. January 24, 2024 at 8:20 am #292251 DaveParticipant January 24, 2024 at 1:55 pm #292255 DaveParticipant January 27, 2024 at 1:01 pm #292299 Nick RParticipant January 27, 2024 at 9:57 pm #292304 FormicaParticipant Yes, H did, didn’t he.
