With just under 24 hours to go until The Promised Land airs on Dave, news broke of when we’d see it on shiny disc, thanks to Amazon’s pre-order for the June 1st release of both the DVD and the Bluray turning up. A singular disc per format in this case, in a first for a Red Dwarf release, but one that’s understandable given the size of the main feature. Mind you, Back To Earth was a similar running time and that managed a whole second disc of extras, admittedly in the rather different home media climate of eleven years ago.

Instead, the rather attractive cover, naturally based on the fabulous poster, reveals that there’s just under an hour’s worth of bonus features, and they break down as follows:

Extra Content:
The Promised Doc – Behind the scenes documentary (28 mins approx.)
Through An Audience’s Eyes – An additional, BBC exclusive behind the scenes featurette (14’25” approx.)
Red Dwarf: The Promised Land – Smeg Ups – Outtakes (7’30” approx.)
Red Dwarf: The Promised Land – Deleted Scenes – Deleted scenes (Just over 6mins)

Aww, half an hour seems short for a Red Dwarf DVD doc, but then it’s about on par with Series XI and XII in proportion to the duration of the episode(s) it covers. And there’s an extra behind the scenes thing there too, although quite what it is and what “BBC exclusive” means in this context isn’t clear. The customary Smeg Ups and deleted scenes are present and correct, and at healthy looking running times. No commentaries of any description, which is to be expected at this point but is still a bit of a shame. What better time to rectify that online, though?

We’ll presumably get more information on all of this via TOS before too long. Thanks to Chris Hobson for giving us the heads-up on Twitter.

  • Just preordered the bluray, fifteen quid on Zoom (the other one).

And you’ll probably get it the Thursday or Friday before release.

  • Delighted to hear from Starburst Magazine that Chris Barrie remains outstanding as Rimmer.

  • And you’ll probably get it the Thursday or Friday before release.

Which is why I tend to order from there regularly. The Doctor Who bluray sets are always here by the weekend.
It’s like the old days, using my Student Loan to preorder the new Red Dwarf DVDs from Play, and watching them over the weekend instead of writing those assignments that were due in last Thursday.

  • Norman isn’t credited with the main cast on the back. Does that mean his role is classed as a guest role? 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • Do they really need to clutter up that gorgeous poster with the “55 minutes of bonus features” box? UK Blu-rays are ugly enough as it is with the rating box distractingly plastered right on the front cover.

I don’t care how much sense that makes, it’s aesthetically terrible.

There’s something in that blurb on the back that’s the same as one of the press releases the other week (it’s probably the same thing, I imagine).
The fact that the guys are listed with their character names in brackets – “Chris Barrie (Rimmer)” etc. – then we have “Holly (Norman Lovett)”.

Stuff like that really gets my feckles up.

  • Stuff like that really gets my feckles up.

It’s hackles you moron, there’s no such word as feckles

  • This is essentially the Red Dwarf movie Doug always wanted. Yes it’s on the telly but it’s a very polished production and has that new car smell.

  • “David Lister” ?

Is he normally called that on DVDs?

This is special. He’s a God.
I’ve been watching the first series with subtitles during the Sunday afternoon commentaries. They sometimes refer to Lister as simply “David”.

  • Always disappointing to hear that there’s no commentary, but at least they seem to be keeping up the Dave-era standard for extras rather than letting it slip.

The “BBC-exclusive” documentary will work like M-Corp. If you aren’t a TV licence payer, then you won’t be able to see or hear the video.

Though nobody’s asked the most important question of all: does the DVD have a reversible cover?

I’ve been watching 60s Who with the subtitles on lately, and, whenever the characters are offscreen, lines will regularly be attributed to the wrong people – Jamie will ask what something is, and the subtitle will read “DOCTOR: What is it?”, twice an episode. I think the people who work on the subtitles aren’t necessarily people familiar with the show(s).

  • With just under 24 hours to go until The Promised Land airs on Dave

    It’s gone midnight. It’s Thursday.

    It’s on TONIGHT.

  • So the Dave Docs are going to be separate and stupidly rare then in the future, or will they get a standalone release? Living on a 25 year old Sky Q box in a box room of a 60 year old Red Dwarf fan in 2045.

Obviously they’ll probably end up compressed to buggery on Dailymotion or something but still.

  • From that, it looks like they might either broadcast the smeg ups and deleted scenes, or just have them up on Dave’s website (more likely). Well spotted!!

  • Assumed they’d go with the poster for the DVD covers, so that’s nice to be confirmed.

Good to have a few extras on there too, although a bit of a head scratcher about these 3 documentaries. Hopefully they get a release at some point but a set of just 3 retrospective documentaries as a separate release seems a little weird if they do it. They seem like they’d be perfectly suited to bolster a 90min special release.

Maybe they can include them on The Promised Land: Remastered in 2030.

  • We all assumed originally that the 3x docs would air roughly at the same time as the special, but that was never actually confirmed by anyone, and it now seems like they’re being treated as completely separate entities. There’s no indication one way or the other as to whether they’ll be aired before June 1st, so it didn’t really register with me that they weren’t included with this release. I do share people’s concerns about things like this slipping through the cracks of history as physical media becomes less of a thing.

  • We all assumed originally that the 3x docs would air roughly at the same time as the special

Unless they have greater plans later in the year, it does seem strange to not take advantage of the Easter Weekend to run the special, followed by a documentary each night.

Fans like us aside, what are the chances of regular/casual viewers tuning into 3 separate documentaries later in the year, with nothing like a brand new episode to anchor them?

  • I increasingly get the feeling that these three documentaries were thrown in as an extra to justify the commissioning of (and budget for) the new special. They feel more like an afterthought than ever now.

  • Ah, TOS says that “special bonus material surprises” will be released on UKTV Play. That explains the links that Si found, then. Also, if the Through The Audience’s Eyes thing isn’t among the bonuses released tonight, that explains why it’s a “BBC exclusive”, although “DVD/Bluray exclusive” would make more sense for the wording.

  • We def need a reversible cover for this one, if only to see XIII confirmed in logo-form…
I also wonder if we’ll get a “director’s cut” or some such later in the year once the 3x documentaries are out.
I wouldn’t mind if it came as a double pack with a BtE re-release with reversible IX cover :)

  • If that “special bonus material” is the 3 documentaries, that would be weird but also totally in keeping with UKTV.

  • I assumed “BBC Exclusive” was just an odd way of saying it focused on the BBC era, but who knows. Anyone who has an HDMI capture card could easily “tape” the doccos for posterity.

  • Funny how we’re getting more minutes of Smeg Ups for a 90 minute special than we did for 180 minutes of episodes the last two series.

Series 10 gave us, what, like an episode-length round of Smeg Ups? The Series XI and XII ones seem to end just as I’m getting into them. They’re like five minutes a piece.

  • They haven’t even finished making the docs yet!! Bloody hell.

At least we know that they’re not just being chucked together.

  • True. But it suggests the “extras” online tonight will just be the smegups and such

Which, nice little preview as that is, I was hoping for more, because I’m a spoiled cunt.

  • “Due to present restrictions they’re sending round green screen and lights so he (can) light and interview himself.”
    Now this is classic Dwarf.

  • I don’t know if I want to watch the Smeg Ups right after the special. They’re always a fun extra but I feel like I want to watch the main feature a couple of times first so that the Smeg Ups aren’t inextricably linked with that experience.

  • Now this is classic Dwarf.

The documentaries were always far better in the olden days when they were slapped together. I mean that’s where most of the enjoyment came from watching them was, wasn’t it? The new ones with the fancy graphics just aren’t as good.

  • I will keep the Smeg Up’s and Deleted Scenes for the DVD release thank you very muchly. It keeps the fun in the DVD.

  • A shame the AA adverts aren’t available on the Blu-ray. It probably would’ve been a massive rights ballache though.

It’s a shame they seem to have disappeared from the ad breaks this past couple of weeks. It would have been somewhat unique having the Dwarf AA ads pop up during Red Dwarf.

  • Didn’t there used to be rules about not being able to show adverts in ad breaks that featured the same performers from the show you were watching? (Presumably for fear of it being confused for an endorsement of the product.) Or did I imagine that?

  • Amazon Bestsellers Rank:
    #6 in DVD & Blu-ray (See Top 100 in DVD & Blu-ray)
    #3 in Comedy (DVD & Blu-ray)
    #3 in Science Fiction (DVD & Blu-ray)
    #1 in Television (DVD & Blu-ray)

Don’t know how much you can read into that at this point but still nice to see.

  • I watched the documentary on UKTV & it was great. I wasn’t bothered about the run time. The Smeg ups are good & how some of the deleted scenes didn’t make it into the actually episode is beyond me. Happy as Larry but yes it’s a shame there’s no commentary

  • Yeah, but is the cover gonna say The Promised Land under the RD logo or XIII… That’s the real question.

  • Yeah, but is the cover gonna say The Promised Land under the RD logo or XIII… That’s the real question.

    Well, its the thirteenth *outing*…

  • Yeah, but is the cover gonna say The Promised Land under the RD logo or XIII… That’s the real question.

The Promised Land because that’s what it’s called.

  • Yeah, but is the cover gonna say The Promised Land under the RD logo or XIII… That’s the real question.

The Promised Land because that’s what it’s called.

    Controversial.

  • Just had an email from Amazon to say that this release has been delayed with no firm date in sight. A shame but not totally unexpected.

  • (Worth noting this may be an Amazon thing rather than an official release-date thing. People who ordered from Zoom are probably receiving copies any day now…)

  • I think it is just an Amazon thing. The release date hasn’t changed in any listings I can see, and the wording of the email was more along the lines of “we can’t guarantee this item will be delivered on time because we’ve got other priorities” rather than “the release has been delayed”.

  • Just got a further email from Amazon saying the new estimated delivery date is June 25th! However, the release date on their listing is still the 1st, and I also pre-ordered from Zoom, who haven’t said anything to suggest it won’t be coming by Monday. In conclusion, fuck knows.

  • Zoom appear to be sending them out now. Good news.

Just been informed that mine’s on its way.

    Which is nice.

  • Me too.

I have also just found out that I accidentally pre-ordered two separate copies, like an utter twat.

  • Wouldn’t it be nice if Doug were to record a commentary that could be listened to online…

    I can but dream.

  • A Red Dwarf co-creator releasing a commentary online? Don’t be ridiculous.

I got the dispatched email from Zoom on Thursday, but today’s post has just been with no Blurays. Anyone else had any luck?

  • I’d have thought the set with the mighty light lightbee and all the monitors and stuff would have been a better choice personally than a corridor, I mean I’m not buying the DVD so it’s moot, but yeah.

Also it’s taken slightly from the right and the wonkyness would irritate the fook out of me.

  • A Red Dwarf co-creator releasing a commentary online? Don’t be ridiculous.

    I know, I’m being greedy.

It is kind of ironic though that the creatives who are no longer involved with the show are recording commentaries, while the current head honcho isn’t.

But, for all I know, Doug may end up being the special guest for the Better Than Life commentary tomorrow…

  • Doug seems to be staying away from Rob, Ed and Paul. i’d be shocked if he ever appeared as a guest.

He did do a commentary for the Quarantine event thing with the cast. But he probably is just in a different place to what Rob, Ed and Paul are when it comes to the show.

He did say he would like to find a way to do commentaries with Richard Naylor one day though.

No, was hoping it would show up today but no luck. Guess the post is just a little slower than usual at the moment.

  • Despite being told that the delivery of my Amazon pre-order would be delayed, apparently the discs should be with me by 9pm.

  • In my experience, Amazon regularly overestimate how long something will take to deliver – I assume they’re just covering their arses for if the item arrives later, or it’s just slightly more difficult to estimate that kind of thing than one would assume. Either way, I think they’re just over-overestimating during the COVID outbreak, since things are now even less certain than they once were. I’ll often order something that says it’ll be delivered in 9 days and it comes the next

Yeah, I thought they might be overestimating which is partly why I kept my pre-order with them. I had thought about cancelling it earlier in the week but then thought that even if it did turn up a bit late, it would hardly be the end of the world.

  • Meanwhile, my Zoom bluray order (despatched Thursday) has yet to arrive due to there now being no post of a Saturday.
I ordered the DVD on Amazon last night just in case…

  • I’ve just been told my Amazon parcel, though out for delivery, will now not arrive until tomorrow or Tuesday. Oh well.

  • This thread is a real rollercoaster.

I can’t wait for the twist where the first person gets it from HMV.

  • A no from me, anyway. I always buy both formats, and it was my bluray from Zoom that was dispatched on Thursday. Alas, the virus-affected postal service meant that Saturday brought no treasure.
When people started getting ‘Sunday by 9pm’ messages from Amazon, I decided to order my DVD from the Amazonians on Saturday evening, just on the off-chance.

    Monday, then.

  • Oh, I’ve pretty much already shared those facts with the group. Oh well. I’ve not got owt, either way.
