You see I have this Make-your-own-opoly set (available in all good toy and game stores) where you can print out board squares of your own naming and put them on a board that is almost but not quite (in a very legal sense) the same as that from a certain popular board game. Of course unscrupulous types could put these stickers on a regular Monopoly board, which is of course shocking and not to be considered. So, thinks I, why not a board based around places and/or items from the Red Dwarf? Old Kent Road and Whitechapel could become Skutters’ Broom Cupboard and Technicians’ Quarters, and so on. You have your Utilities and Stations to consider, Jail could be The Tank, Free parking the Docking Bay. The money of course is in Dollarpounds. Chance could be “Oh Smeg! What the smegging smeg’s he smegging done?” and Community Chest could be, I dunno, Yvonne McGruder? Consider the pieces as well. I might be tempted to use the figures from the Starbug playset, but what would you have as more “traditional” white metal pieces? Talkie Toaster, a Skutter, a Polymorph, a Starbug, a thermos flask and a spare head spring to mind for starters. The whole building houses and hotels thing doesn’t really work, but you might instead have, say cans of Leopard Lager, four being exchanged for a Mutton Vindaloo or some such. Any thoughts? Yvonne would be perfect for the Community Chest. July 5, 2007 at 9:27 pm #123805 Tarka DalParticipant That’s skating ever so close to a Birds of a Feather gag. July 5, 2007 at 11:45 pm #123807 Danny StephensonKeymaster as for the ?traditional? white metal pieces, a little red dwarf a little starbug a little blue midget A bazookoid. when you say Polymorph (I envisage the little ‘kevin’ version, and actually making the hurgh noises as you move round the board) lister’s deer stalker hat (tying in with the bowler hat from the original) I REALLY WANT THIS GAME NOW. Andrew can we make this happen please? July 6, 2007 at 9:07 am #123812 BazParticipant All good ideas so far, I agree that Quarantine is better than The Tank for Jail. I need a list of places on red Dwarf now to compare and contrast with a monopoly board (the Wikipedia entry has US and UK versions if you need a reference). I’ll start the list, please add to it. Technician’s Quarters Drive Room Ships Mess Parrots Bar Officer’s Quarters Captains Office Skutters Broom Cupboard Sickbay Scanner Room Observation Dome Stasis Booth Diesel Deck Holo Projection Suite Carry on… July 6, 2007 at 9:44 am #123813 AndrewParticipant > I REALLY WANT THIS GAME NOW. Andrew can we make this happen please? Do it yourself: July 6, 2007 at 9:47 am #123815 BazParticipant Yup. That’s what I’ve got. You can get a custom real Monopoly board done up, but the cost is horrendous. This is a bit more effort, but cheaper. July 6, 2007 at 10:49 am #123816 AndrewParticipant The irony of all this, of course, is that the REGULAR version of Monopoly is a key part of the Dwarf mythos already. As far as the novels are concerned, this game is, indirectly, what landed Lister on the damn ship in the first place. July 6, 2007 at 12:20 pm #123817 BazParticipant Mimas is a very long way to go to find a Monopoly board, isn’t it. Games feature quite heavily in RD actually. Apart from Monopoly you’ve got Risk, Draughts, Golf (miniature and regular), Zero-G Football, Junior Angler, Soap Sud Slalom, Durex Volleyball and Unicycle Polo for starters. You can Dwarfize any game of course, a RD Chess Set would be great. King and Queen-Lister and Kochanski, Bishops- Holly and Kryten, Knights- Rimmer and Cat, Castles- Starbugs, Pawns- Skutters. Opposite numbers (if you didn’t want to duplicate) could be King and Queen- Simulant Captain and Dr Lindstrom, Bishops- Legion and Inquisitor, Knights- Kinatowowi and Polymorph, Castles- Gelf Fighters, Pawns- Flibbles. I was thinking of picking up a copy of Frag! and converting it to something more Dwarfy. I’d call it Smeg! But if there as one game I’d really like to see produced… Well, easy, Pin the Pointy Stick on the TV Weather Girl. July 6, 2007 at 12:41 pm #123820 John HoareParticipant That?s skating ever so close to a Birds of a Feather gag. Inspector Fowler, in The Thin Blue Line:” There’s a place for smutty inuendo, Constable Kray, and that place is on Birds of a Feather.” Although I quite like the early series… July 6, 2007 at 1:57 pm #123821 Smeg4BrainsParticipant An official Red Dwarf monopoly would be amazing. I think GNP people should talk to Monopoly people. July 6, 2007 at 2:18 pm #123823 PhilParticipant >I?ll start the list, please add to it. The Exam Room (which may actually have a visible on-screen name I can’t remember) The Botanical Gardens (mentioned but not seen in regards to Lister’s Nutkin fantasy) Steam Room (as seen in Bodyswap) The Hangar Captain’s Table (seems to be in a different room from the ship’s mess) July 6, 2007 at 3:05 pm #123824 pfmParticipant I think you might be better off having the property as various locations/ships seen in the series rather than just confined to the Dwarf. Community Chest cards could be called Garbage Pod and Chance could be Future Echoes (the idea being that you pay for stuff that happens to you in the future, e.g. you end up as a brain in a jar pay ?200 medical bill) actually that’s a bit crap but you could have a laugh thinking up the cards. July 6, 2007 at 3:39 pm #123826 BazParticipant Monopoly sets are normally defined to a distinct location, like a city. True, the themed boards like the Star Wars or Star Trek ones don’t, but the Simpsons and Powerpuff Girls (I kid you not) editions do. I’d prefer the Big Red One as the basis for the game, gives it more coherence in my mind. Ah yes, thinking up the cards is part of the fun. Bought myself a travel monopoly set so I could work on them (it doesn’t actually have cards, but the list you roll on has the same results). In the Make-your-own-opoly set they’re actually called Good News and Bad News. July 6, 2007 at 5:00 pm #123827 Steve HarrisParticipant We have a number of versions including, The Simpsons and Star Wars, we also have one (cant recall the name) that has a global theme and you tick off places on a passport.. Clearly, the makers are able and willing to diversify somewhat if they see a profit in it.. There is also somewhere in the house, a PC Star Wars version, which is extremely slow.. July 6, 2007 at 9:35 pm #123828 PhilParticipant >Community Chest cards could be called Garbage Pod and Chance could be Future Echoes 100% agreed on the Future Echoes. I might change Garbage Pod to Post Pod, however…you can do a lot more with the contents of a Post Pod than the contents of a Garbage Pod…(though, now that I’ve said it, I realize it’s debateable…) Oh, and add the A/R Suite to the list of locations. I know, we only ever saw the one on Starbug…but if JMC saw it important enough to install on each of the Starbugs there must DEFINITELY be one on Dwarf itself… July 6, 2007 at 9:39 pm #123830 John HoareParticipant Powerpuff Girls (I kid you not) editions Oooh, I’d never heard about this! Fantastic! *googles* I want. July 6, 2007 at 9:50 pm #123831 Tarka DalParticipant I prefer the idea of different locations visited, otherwise you’ll really be scrapping the bottom of the barrel for locations. The trouble with all these novelty Monopoly sets is the that a lot of the time the core idea doesn’t transfer (Gaining a monopoly, and buying property). Still, the Board Game or even CCG (Customisable Card Game) market is defintely something Dwarf could explore. The US version of the Buffy boardgame is proof that you can make a great boardgame based on a TV show that isn’t just a brand cash-in. July 6, 2007 at 9:50 pm #123832 Tarka DalParticipant Ooooh special rule. Every time you roll a 5 and 2 you can move to the square of your choosing ;-) July 6, 2007 at 10:37 pm #123833 Danny StephensonKeymaster > The irony of all this, of course, is that the REGULAR version of Monopoly is a key part of the Dwarf mythos already. As far as the novels are concerned, this game is, indirectly, what landed Lister on the damn ship in the first place. Although I completely forgot about this, it’s all the more reason to make a Dwarf-version of it. if I do the “Make-Your-Own-Opoly”, then I would have to create box art for it and everything, to fulfil my dream of having a real Dwarf version. July 6, 2007 at 10:43 pm #123834 Danny StephensonKeymaster I honestly think this is a really good idea for GNP to get in on this. There could be a competition for submissions into the contents of the Chance cards and Community chest. I’m sure fans would love to know that their submissions ended up in the actual game. Even the locations would be fan-submitted! You wouldn’t have to lift a finger. Mostly…. July 6, 2007 at 10:46 pm #123835 Danny StephensonKeymaster > Ooooh special rule. Every time you roll a 5 and 2 you can move to the square of your choosing ;-) “Ok, Rimmer… what did you do with the dice?” “…I threw a 5 and a 2…” Was that intentional, Karl? July 6, 2007 at 10:52 pm #123836 Danny StephensonKeymaster Do the locations have to be ON Red Dwarf or would it be places that have appeared in Red Dwarf: SSS Esperanto, Justice World, SS Centauri, Io, Miranda, Mimas, Garbage World, would be Old Kent Road. yes? no? Sorry for the multiple posts but they’re on seperate subjects :) July 6, 2007 at 11:47 pm #123837 AndrewParticipant > You wouldn?t have to lift a finger. Mostly?. No offense, but do people really think ‘having the idea’ is the hardest part of getting merchandise designed, produced and distributed?! July 7, 2007 at 7:25 am #123838 Tarka DalParticipant Yes Danny it was a reference. Maybe it could be split across series so that each group of locations was linked to a series? After all we have eight colour groups. So, we start small with two series one locations – let’s say the bunk room and the drive room, then we get more extravagant with each series. Right I’m going to list all the squares, for convenience, and chuck in some suggestions. GO – Red Dwarf itself? Old Kent Rd – Bunk Room COMMUNITY CHEST – Post Pod Whitechapel – Captain’s Office / Drive Room INCOME TAX – KINGS CROSS STATION – Blue Midget Angel Islington – Series II Drive Room / Science Room CHANCE – Euston Road – Floor 16 Pentonville Road – Nova 5 JAIL – Quarentine Pall Mall – Officers Quarters ELECTRIC COMPANY – The Norweb Federation? Whitehall – Xanadu Northumberland Avenue – Backwards Earth Location MARYLEBONE STATION – Starbug Bow Street – Parrot’s Bar COMMUNITY CHEST – Post Pod Marlborough Street – Scanning Room Vine Street – Waxworld FREE PARKING – Justice World (It makes more sense it’s a neutral square) Strand – SSS Esperanto CHANCE – Fleet St – Psi-Moon Trafalgar Square – Enlightenment FENCHURCH STREET – Leicester Square – Coventry Street – Waterworks – Piccadilly – Rimmerworld GO TO JAIL – Regent Street – SS Centuari Oxford Street – COMMUNITY CHEST – Post Pod Bond Street – LIVERPOOL STREET STATION – CHANCE – Park Lane – SUPER TAX – Ooooh ooooh OUTLAND REVENUE! Mayfair – You can finish the rest of yourselves :P I like the idea of the stations being ships, but then how would you distinguish between those ships and ships as locations? Perhaps if all the stations were JMC or Space-Corp vehicles. It makes more sense having external locations both for building and because a lot of the action takes place off-ship. In terms of cards you want to get EVERYTHING in there. Writing a #1 hit that everyone has to buy (give you money for), the Holly Hop Drive – go directly to XXXX etc. Also somekind of advanced rules that involve curry and drinking based shenanigans. Perhaps you could have an additional villain wandering round the board that does something horrible to you when it lands on your square. July 7, 2007 at 8:59 am #123839 Danny StephensonKeymaster > No offense, but do people really think ?having the idea? is the hardest part of getting merchandise designed, produced and distributed?! Of course not, Andrew. We’ve personally seen the procedure of creation, design, and production of the Dwarf DVD’s to know that it takes a shedload of planning. But I seriously believe that this is a marketable idea July 8, 2007 at 5:42 pm #123847 PhilParticipant Thought of a few more: Shower Room (from Stasis Leak) Disco (from Parallel Universe) Holly’s Brain Room (from White Hole) July 8, 2007 at 11:18 pm #123849 Tarka DalParticipant You find a statis Leak on Floor #16, go directly to Shower Room. If you pass your bunk collect $?200. July 8, 2007 at 11:53 pm #123850 Danny StephensonKeymaster 3 Million years from Earth, and You win a smegging Holiday in Mauritius, collect $?100 July 8, 2007 at 11:59 pm #123851 Danny StephensonKeymaster “The sub-space conduits have locked with the transponder calibrations and caused a tachyon surge that has overloaded the time matrix: In short: you flamingo-ed up” YOU OWE THE BANK $?200 July 9, 2007 at 6:05 am #123852 Tarka DalParticipant Now we’re rolling, Einstiens every one. July 9, 2007 at 8:54 am #123854 BazParticipant Like the idea of Justice World being Jail myself. “You have been negligent in repairing a drive plate leading to the deaths of 1165 people through radiation leakage. Go straight to Justice World, do not pass Go, do not collect $?200” I do admit that the buying and selling concept has little to do with RD, but then what does it have to do with Star Wars, the Simpsons or the Powerpuff Girls? In accordance with Lister’s dreams however the houses and hotels could be replaced with Hot Dog/Doughnut stalls and, I dunno, a Farmhouse? July 9, 2007 at 7:37 pm #123855 Smeg4BrainsParticipant “You stepped on a superior technicians foot, maliciously and with intent to wound. You owe the bank ?50” July 9, 2007 at 8:11 pm #123856 Tarka DalParticipant I did an lol at that one. I like the dougnut stalls idea, perhaps with 4 doughnuts stalls suddenly being trumped by a huge Rimmer emblazoned Skyscraper. July 9, 2007 at 10:08 pm #123857 Steve HarrisParticipant You have bought a work of art…’Smeg it’s a light switch’ pay each player $?50 July 9, 2007 at 10:55 pm #123858 Tarka DalParticipant It appears your intelligence circuits have melted. Miss a go. July 10, 2007 at 12:31 am #123859 pfmParticipant You accidentally devolve Cat with the Time Wand. Pay ?20 for milk and Whiskas supplies. You left a light on…3 million years ago. Pay all your money to Norweb. You sell your photograph of Chloe Annett’s foaming twat. Collect ?200. By the way, does anyone else hate it when people insist on playing stupid made-up rules in Monopoly? Like, if you land directly on Go you get ?400 instead of ?200. And I can’t count on both hands the number of arguments that have cropped up over whether you can collect rent when you’re in jail and buy property when others decline to when they land on it. What about the supposed ‘short game’ where all the cards are dealt out at the beginning. It just leads to loads of mad deals in order to get sets. You can also always guarantee that someone will smash the board up when they get bored. I once saw a game being played with real money. They used the game notes but the deal was that you gambled your starting money, which is ?1500 (I’m not joking, they actually did play with that amount of their own money). There was a time limit of 3 hours. My cousin lost fifteen-hundred fucking quid, the idiot twat. Some other guy walked away with around ?6000. July 10, 2007 at 9:33 am #123862 BazParticipant Coming together nicely now. Do-nut stands and a Rimmer Skyscraper (with a “H” on it, naturally) are an option. Also considering skutters and a series 4000 droid, or Starbugs and a Red Dwarf (the Star Trek Monopoly has Galaxy Class Starships and a Starbase). GO is going to be Drive Room, Jail is Quarantine (or still might be Stasis), Free Parking is Docking Bay (might have the “Go to Jail” as the Quarantine Docking Bay with a Flibble). Stations are, in order- Blue Midget, Ramscoop, Starbug and Engines. Utilities are Bazookoid and Psi Scanner. One of the Tax spots will be Outland Revenue, don’t know what the other one will be (was there mention of any other fines or taxes paid during the series?). Plenty of locations on the Dwarf to fit the remaining areas, first two will be Skutter’s Broom Cupboard and Bunk Room, last two will be Officer’s Quarters and Captain’s Office. Still got to sort out the order the rest go in, but they’ll include Vending Machines, Xpress Lifts and Holly. Keeps me off the streets… July 10, 2007 at 10:52 am #123863 PhilParticipant Any programmers among us want to whip this into a computer game? I remember loads of Shareware Monopoly programs when I was younger… July 10, 2007 at 10:52 am #123864 Jonathan CappsKeymaster This is the best thread ever. July 10, 2007 at 12:25 pm #123865 Steve HarrisParticipant Shouldn’t Diva-Droid be one of the Utilities perhaps… Your Series 4000 Mechanoid has gone down with droid rot, pay $?200 for a new head… July 10, 2007 at 1:48 pm #123866 Smeg4BrainsParticipant > Shouldn?t Diva-Droid be one of the Utilities perhaps? And maybe Crapola should be the other. July 10, 2007 at 1:53 pm #123867 BazParticipant If you didn?t want to use just locations on the Dwarf itself you could do locations as they appear in the show- Red Dwarf (GO) Nova 5 (ship) Deathday Moon (moon) BTL World (simulation) Ganymede Hilton (time travel) Parallel Red Dwarf (parallel) Reverse Earth (parallel) Marooned Ice Planet (world) Justice World (station) Waxworld (world) Holoship (ship) Psi Moon (moon) Quarantine Ice Planet (world) High & Low Red Dwarf Ocean World (world) Esperanto (ship) Despair Squid Hallucination (simulation) Psiren Planetoid (moon) Legion?s Space Station (station) Laredo (simulation) Gelf Moon (moon) Simulant Battleship (ship) Rimmerworld (world) Dallas 1963 (time travel) Aigburth Arms (time travel) SS Centauri (ship) Leviathan (ship) Another Ocean World (world) SSS Silverburg (ship) Mirror Universe (parallel) Enough there to fill the entire board and there?s a few I left out. Oh, and- You find a moon shaped like Felicity Kendall’s bottom, miss a turn while you do a few orbits. July 10, 2007 at 6:07 pm #123868 Tarka DalParticipant Nice last one, but the utilities and stations ideas seem a little lacking. July 11, 2007 at 12:12 pm #123873 BazParticipant Oh that was just a categorised list of places I culled from the episode listing on Wiki. These would be the regular properties on the game board, not sure which of these the utilities/stations would be. My version will be restricted to the Dwarf itself I think, and I’m going to stick with Bazookoid and Psi Scanner as utilities and the two ends of the Dwarf and the secondary vehicles as the stations. (The Blackbird was a hell of a lot easier to lay out as a Monopoly board. It was even geographically correct. Still, it is my RD ship, so I suppose it would be…) July 11, 2007 at 1:26 pm #123874 PhilParticipant Another of the white metal pieces: A light bee. July 11, 2007 at 9:51 pm #123885 Steve HarrisParticipant I like the idea of having series related colour groups, it’s almost as if Monopoly was created for an eventual Red Dwarf version… July 11, 2007 at 10:30 pm #123886 Smeg4BrainsParticipant > it?s almost as if Monopoly was created for an eventual Red Dwarf version? EVERYTHING was created for an eventual Red Dwarf version. July 11, 2007 at 11:15 pm #123887 Danny StephensonKeymaster we have a rule that whenever someone gets fined of charged that isn’t rent, the money goes under board in the ‘kitty’ (which is actually a small cat we placed there before start of play) and if you land on free parking then you get the money, i’ve just finished a game with my nephew (who’s 17) and we ended up with ?2,825 (my nephew has a fucking eidetic memory or something for these things) and it can make or break a game. I’m in the process of creating something at the moment, i’ll keep you posted. July 11, 2007 at 11:28 pm #123888 Tarka DalParticipant I tell you something, get this done in time for DJ and for once we won’t have to go walking round golf courses at four in the morning.
