I have absolutely no idea whether or not this is a community of people who enjoy them thar vidja games, but it’s either post this here or sit in the living room and watch America’s Funniest Home VIdeos with my Dad. Yeah.

Is anyone else looking forward to this game as much as I am? I just spent the better part of the last two hours snagging the soundtrack for this game, and it’s incredibly, ‘credibly good. Over wonderful songs, many of which are re-arrangements of classic Nintendo tunes. There’s also a rather nice little wedge of Sonic the Hedgehog and Metal Gear stuff in there, too.

The game itself, of course, looks marvelous. I’ve seen a few videos and it looks a lot slicker than Super Smash Bros. Melee did. I don’t think I’m exaggerating at all when I say it will probably be the finest Wii title of 2008.

I loved, loved, loved the original Smash Bros. Easily in my top 10 games of all time. Melee was also very good, and certainly had some excellent additions (more characters is never a bad thing), but in Melee sometimes the screen got much too busy.

The first game had a better balance of fighting / level layout / background hazards than the second one did. In Melee there were too many levels in which just staying alive took precedence over battling your friend.

Great game, but on the whole I prefer the original.

That said, Brawl looks excellent, and I’m really hoping the balance is better handled there.

Oh: do we have a final confirmation of all playable characters yet? I think a few from the past games are missing, which is kind of sad. I’ll especially miss Jigglypuff. That’s the character my friends used to make me play after I beat them too many times in a row.

    Ah, mem’ries…

The entire character roster has been posted on Kotaku a few times. Pretty much everyone from SSBM is in it, although one or two have been relegated to Secret Character status. Perhaps the best discovery so far as I’m concerned is that Young Link has been replaced by “Toon” Link from Wind Waker/The Minish Cap/Phantom Hourglass. I loved wind Waker, and it’s a shame it gets as much flack as it does.

Ooh, I didn’t realize that. I loved Waker as well. A lot of the criticism was accurate (too much sailing, too easy, etc.) but none of it detracted from my enjoyment of the game. I still return to it simply BECAUSE it’s not too challenging to play through and enjoy the whole way.

I thought it was an excellent chapter in a phenomenal series of games. What a treat to find him in Brawl.

Now if only you could Brawl as a Goron…

I’m kinda glad if Jigglypuff’s gonna be gone from brawl, the amount of times I sat staring in utter confusion at the screen during matches with Jigglypuff and Kirby.

Wind Waker doesn’t get slagged off half as much as it used to. I think that’s because people eventually realised there WAS a good game behind the ‘kiddie’ graphics. I always liked the graphics anyway, in many ways they’re still better than Twilight Princess’s visuals. Speaking of that game, in the end I don’t think it holds up as well as TP, or as well as Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask of course.

Whatever, bring on Smash Bros! I’m currently STILL trying to fully complete Mario. I don’t know how my Wii Remote has survived the number of times I’ve whizzed it across the room (then realising the strap’s still on as it swings back and twats me on the chin…)

One is bright pink. The other is a pale pink. One has squinty little black eyes. The other has big blue eyes. One has red shoes on. The other does not. It’s not a huge problem spotting the difference between the two up until the point where Kirby eats Jigglypuff.

Oh, and Jigglypuff is in Brawl :)

Wind Waker was the butt of many “ZELDA MORE LIKE CELDA OLOLOL” jokes for a while. Some of the people on the Penny Arcade Forums have already taken to calling Wind Waker Link “Retarded Link”, which is a bit unnecessary if you ask me. I really adored the visual style of Wind Waker, though. Absolutely incredible. That said, I don’t think it would have worked for Twilight Princess.

I’m of the opinion that Zelda doesn’t quite work as well in 3D as it does in 2D. A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening and Oracle of Ages will always be my favourite Zelda games, and having listened to the SSBB soundtrack it’s really good to hear these three games get some kind of representation in the game.
