I’m currently rewatching XI in recording order. I think it is quite good. Krysis is mah favourite episode.

I think Butler is the best guest star since Legion which is rather ironic if you think about it.

I really like the end when they are all standing together talking to ‘Uni’ it really reminded me old the IV/V days.

I thought it was brilliant. The sets were gorgeous, the lighting felt like the old days . Other than a few continuity knocks I’d rate it very high.

Not a return to form (as that would imply it’s as good as the first 6 series) but getting close, a vast improvement over series X. Overall I was pretty happy with series XI and fills me with a sense of optimism about series XII, and hopefully beyond!

here’s the argument that xi is the best since v that you can’t deny, it goes like this… krysis is a bit like legion but it’s better… officer rimmer is a bit like rimmerworld but it’s better… can of worms is a sequel to polymorph but it’s better than emohawk… twentica, samsara and give and take are better than psirens… if you get this far then you’ve got to think gunmen and out of time, which are amazing, are so good that they outweigh the other two thirds of the series, which can’t quite be true. ok it’s just my smegging opinion

There are alot of things that niggle me about XI, from the multidirectional plots which feel like dougs trying too hard to be clever which ends up totally missing the mark or jokes that end up going on too long and outstaying their welcome.

Oh and Dougs take on the cat for 2 of the episodes.

Doug seems inherently more focused on strong, complicated science-fiction concepts… and then adding a few jokes on. It seems a lot of his episodes are dedicated to long scenes of Kryten explaining which concept it is each week that Doug wants to explore.

Red Dwarf with both Rob and Doug was always a simple, science-fiction trope with the focus always being on humour.

    You are right.

I was full of Awe, watching such a great new series of Red Dwarf.

I don’t know if we would ever get an episode like say Dimension Jump in modern Dwarf under Dougs solo writing because if we got it today i could see it being far more busier with either another added plot thrown in mid episode or just alot more stuff going on in general.

To be fair, we would never have got an episode like Thanks for the Memory in series V or VI.

To be fair we also would never have got an episode like The End in series III.

    (Am I doing this right?)

Well the Red Dwarf US pilot was basically The End in Series 3 ;p

I agree though that we probably wouldn’t get an episode like Thanks for the Memory in Series V or VI but i do think Thanks for the Memory would actually fit in X and XI with the type of stories Doug is going for, Its just i don’t think we would get the same simplistic quality if it was written by Doug today.

That’s a good point. Something like Give & Take isn’t a million miles away in concept, it just has added plot complications and action where Thanks For The Memory had more in-depth character work.

It would be lovely to see the show get back to those ‘quieter’ moments but I think that time has passed.

the beginning – sort of simple and rounded and a bit like dimension jump (even has a flashback opener)

    what about krysis…

    #219205

I quite like the twisty-turns nature of XI, but I will admit there’s something about the simplicity of Lemons and The Beginning that would be nice in there. Krysis is probably the closest it came, but then the Kryten/Butler plot was interrupted by first the GELFs and then the Universe. Samsara without the flashbacks would have been like an older one.
But Doug is obviously interested in pursuing a more complex, strange sci-fi universe at this point, and I’m enjoying the plots and jokes so I’m happy with that.

I gotta say, I feel like XI has way more re-watch quality than X. I’ve been binge-watching frequently since I got the DVD. With the exception of Officer Rimmer – and even that one had some great moments.

I’ve very happy with the level of quality XI has achieved, and if XII is as experimental as it sounds I’m in for a treat.
