For those who don’t know, the original ending (which can be viewed here https://youtu.be/YQDQ2EbnK1E) saw the crew save Red Dwarf from the corrosive microbe, with Rimmer famously declaring “Full ahead Mr Kryten, I see no ships!” when watching a stranded Captain Hollister from his window. Many have suggested that this ending makes much more sense and that it is a far better ending, especially as there is effectively ‘no ounce’ of continuity between the other series. Thoughts? *Note, please refrain from posting comments about merging three opinions into one, thank you. This is a serious discussion. October 2, 2017 at 10:03 pm #222422 DaveParticipant As we all know, the ending to the Series VIII finale Only the Good was changed at the last minute to feature Rimmer kneeing death in his nether regions, however the rushed nature of this ending has led many to suggest that perhaps the original, much longer ending, should have been kept. I think they should have taken both those ideas and the abandoned Ace Rimmer cameo and merged three separate endings into one. October 2, 2017 at 10:04 pm #222423 International DebrisParticipant I agree with both the opening post, and the two responses. If there was only some way we could somehow combine them into one perfect ending. October 2, 2017 at 10:30 pm #222427 cwickhamParticipant Is it actually true that Chris Barrie was in the Ace costume for the abandoned ending, or is that exaggeration on Doug’s behalf? Also: Exactly what was filmed, when? The unused ending where they make the antidote was presumably shot on the audience night – were the various endings where Rimmer is trapped on the exploding ship also done, or were they pick-ups? Is the audience reaction over the broadcast version real? October 2, 2017 at 11:03 pm #222428 bloodtellerParticipant the original ending was obviously better because it wasn’t total shit, and also put an end to the pointless prison arc (how do they even escape the prison so easily earlier in the episode?) Will you actually be partaking in this discussion, or will you just lose interest, toddle off and create a new thread about something else? >Many have suggested that this ending makes much more sense Citation needed. It’s shit. It’s equally shit to the actual ending. Equally shit to the prospect of Ace Rimmer turning up. And equally shit to the prospect of Red Dwarf crash-landing on Earth and Lister swapping insurance details (?). Since the ending of VIII has been forgotten anyway, not sure it really matters which one we got. October 2, 2017 at 11:15 pm #222431 HamishParticipant > This is a serious discussion. I think you have got the wrong forum mate. October 3, 2017 at 2:51 am #222433 Dax101Participant The original ending feels like a better book end to series 8 but it is still fairly rubbish one. October 3, 2017 at 3:14 am #222434 MoonlightParticipant Honestly before you’d even begin worrying about which ending works better, you need to convert the entire rest of the episode into a coherent, focused narrative centered around a single big idea. Or, you know, just do more escalating prank shit for the THIRD EPISODE IN A ROW, randomly pull a mirror universe portal out of nowhere, go make a bunch of jokes based in inconsistent cartoon logic rather than any kind of intelligent sci-fi concept, and then pull some undeserved drama out of your ass at the last minute. Only the Good is a shit piece of television regardless of how it ends. October 3, 2017 at 5:53 am #222435 MANI506Participant The original ending would have been better in the short term but in the long term the ‘what the fuck was that’ ending is more interesting. ‘What the fuck was that’ was my response to at least the second half of VIII though. October 3, 2017 at 7:12 am #222436 DaveParticipant I think they should have had Rimmer wake up on a train on his way to interview for the Second Technician job and realise the whole series had been a dream. October 3, 2017 at 9:00 am #222438 bloodtellerParticipant why is it that when the crew discover the chameleonic microbe, Kryten and the others somehow know that it destroyed the Hermes and arrived in the form of an escape pod? does the captain just keep them up-to-date on all the plot elements they weren’t around to see? October 3, 2017 at 11:54 am #222441 (deleted)Participant I’m just glad there’s finally a thread about whether series VIII was any good. Been waiting ages. October 3, 2017 at 11:58 am #222442 Ben SaundersParticipant Kryten enabled Best Guess Mode October 3, 2017 at 12:58 pm #222447 International DebrisParticipant It’s weird to think that there’s a version of the episode without Tony Slattery’s vending machine reappearing. That’s about the only genuinely good part of the episode, and the only part that makes it seem like the episode’s structure was considered in any real way, that I can’t imagine it not being in it. Although obviously the original ending has the benefit of not bringing in a fantasy character for Rimmer to kick in the balls, followed by more incoherent font usage and ‘the smeg it is’, it also has several things going against it, including everyone knowing the name of the microbe (utterly unhilarious and narratively appalling) and the whole ‘intentionally leaving the rest of the crew to die in their Starbugs’ aspect. October 3, 2017 at 1:15 pm #222449 cwickhamParticipant The original ending does have Tony Slattery’s vending machine. Rimmer decides to give the money back but the machine fires a can at him anyway, with dialogue that also appears in the broadcast ending. October 3, 2017 at 2:33 pm #222467 cwickhamParticipant It’s weird to think that perhaps the original, much longer ending, should have been kept, which does have Tony Slattery’s vending machine. October 3, 2017 at 4:15 pm #222475 International DebrisParticipant God, it’s been so long since I saw that ending that I totally forgot the vending machine appears in it. The final use of it is FAR better, still. There’s something about the vending machine holding such a grudge that knocking Rimmer out on his way to at least try and fix the ship is still worth doing for it. October 3, 2017 at 4:56 pm #222478 JonsmadParticipant There hasnt been a good ending to that bad episode that im aware of yet. I dont think doug has really finished writing that episode yet. he got close in series X. clearly that episode had to finish the status quo of the prison story, return the possibility of a red dwarf with only a small crew onboard of central characters, so the see no ships ending might have done that better. but the third thing that was needed was an appetite for dwarf to return, at the time, as a movie. “The smeg it is” while total shite helped the audience at least into a very long mode of “sitting and waiting for more dwarf” as opposed to a “dwarfs over forever” mind set. Now thankfully it’s a significant “end of chapter” marker, rather than the rubbish end to a tv show petering out forever and failing to fund a movie. Says the guy commenting on his own post about combining three opinions into one. Why have you stretched this one opinion across three posts? October 3, 2017 at 8:38 pm #222500 Dax101Participant Id like to know what Dougs frame of mind was during series 8 (apart from the Movie!) The scene in Cassandra where lister says kryten figured it out for example feels abit like either a subtle joke or just Doug was just saying Fuck it fans will accept kryten will come up with things and be right about it. Same with alot of Only the Good, it felt like Doug was going through the motions but didn’t feel any pressure to take any of it seriously. Kicking Death in the balls is a funny premise but its also one of the most cartoony thing the show has ever done. let alone the fact that i don’t honestly believe Doug had any real plan to make another series because in one of the early fan club magazines in 2002 he pretty much said he just wanted to stick to red dwarf movies now. October 4, 2017 at 10:04 pm #222580 bloodtellerParticipant >Id like to know what Dougs frame of mind was during series 8 sex, obviously. every episode in VIII involves sex in one way or another. Back in the Red has the sex virus, Cassandra has the rimmer-kochanski sex, Krytie TV has the sexual harassment, Pete has the erection basketball and kryten’s penis, and Only the Good has talia, who rimmer attempts sex with.
