A thought just occurred to me whilst replying to the topic “Rimmer and his brief time in the Mirror Universe”, at the end of the Original ending, Rimmer saves the day and later Lister, Kochanski and Cat do a congo dance whilst Kryten and Rimmer are in the Captains quarters. Surely it should be Kochanski in the Captains quarters at the end of the episode as a Navigation Officer must surely out rank a Second Technician. I can understand that at the moment in time the crew is happy to be rid of the virus and out of the Tank..and on the run from the crew (I’m guessing) but in the long term wouldn’t Kochanski become the Captain or because she is from the parallel universe, does she forfeit that privilege?

Well obviously she outranks Rimmer, and he would almost certainly do as she says. But it’s fairly likely that they wouldn’t even bother having a captain. I doubt anyone other than Rimmer would listen to her anyway if she started parading around the ship as captain, even if she technically is.

Kochanski wouldn’t have a rank, would she? She presumably doesn’t have a commission on board this Red Dwarf and with only stowaways and prisoners left, 2nd technician is highest.

Now why isn’t Bob in charge of the ship??? “Rimmer, You rank all four of those services robots – Even the one that’s completely nuts.”

Isn’t one of the charges against Lister that he “kidnapped Navigation Officer Kristine Kochanski?” It’s been a while since I’ve seen it…but it seems that the fact that she isn’t from this reality doesn’t matter.

The nanobots didn’t rebuild this reality’s Kochanski so to all intents and purposes she is a local. She would outrank Rimmer and he would outrank Lister and he would outrank the laboratory mice.

Remember he was exonerated of that – they all were. They were found guilty of abusing classified information.

My own theory re. Captain Kochanski: yes, technically speaking she’s the captain now, but she doesn’t want to move into Hollister’s quarters (she’s an officer – she has nice quarters, not crappy technician’s quarters) and she recognises that calling herself Captain isn’t going to mean a damn thing to most of the Dwarfers anyway. Rimmer, on the other hand, is happy to call bagsies for the captain’s quarters himself. And, since Kochanski is off partying with Lister and Cat, Rimmer is contentedly ordering around Kryten in his new position as the Acting Executive Officer.

Which is not at all the point I was addressing. I was addressing the point somebody else made that since Kochanski came from an alternate dimension, she would not have a commission aboard this Red Dwarf.

Whether he/they was/were exonorated or not isn’t even in question. The fact that she was termed “Navigation Officer Kristine Kochanski” means she did, in fact, have a rank aboard this particular Dwarf, and the fact that she’s transdimensional doesn’t seem to matter to the show at all.

Seems more a case that Kochanski simply doesn’t believe there’s enough to be captain of. Two people? She would also have been captain when she was with Dave, her Dave. As Lister would have been when Rimmer left.

Seems the two just don’t have Rimmer’s obessesion with rank and find more worth in surviving/passing the time. Hollister on the other hand was running a mini city of 1,169 (plus prisoners?).

This is when a Red Dwarf expanded universe would come in handy. ;)

“There was an inmate population of four-hundred”

    1,569 (plus Skutters)

*rereads post* Oh, yeah. I misinterpreted “charges” as “charges he was convicted of” and was being nitpicky.

Well, yeah, you’re right anyway. To the resurrected crew, Kochanski IS their Kochanski.
