Does anyone know how to contact Captain Star?

Would that be for 3D printing?

I bought a model of the classic Dwarf a while back, they’re still on eBay and etsy, it was absolutely terrible. It wasn’t hugely accurate but I could live with that, the problem was that none of the pieces would fit together. A friend of mine offered to fix it with some laser cutting thingy but it turned out that the details on the hull wouldn’t line up if he made the internal faces fit together.

We definitely need a well made Red Dwarf model on the market. With 3D printing you wouldn’t even have to print them yourself. You could sell the STL or failing that upload it to a site like Shapeways, they print and post and you get a share of the money. 

I suppose you could 3D print any 3D model, but that wasn’t my intent. I wouldn’t have space for one thing. What I wanted to do eventually was make a VR experience of it in full scale flypast to really get the sense of size depicted in the show. But I also just want it to exist again in one form or another. A loving homage to a lost piece of childhood. And fuck-you to Sir Issac Newton. I’m not looking to charge for any copy of it.

Photogrametry of the DVD model footage has been helpful for general shapes, but getting the precise scale of the original model is important for correctly identifying the various greeblies used. Like the piece in Captain Star’s user icon appears to be a rear portion of the left shoulder of a Super Dimension Century Orgus II model kit, but I can’t be sure what specific kit. I’m guessing a 1/40 scale, but there seem to be a few. Captain Star’s matches the number of vent grills on the original, but has a locating tab/tophat that I can’t make out on any of the footage available. I managed to find a duplicate of the wooden ruler they used for scale in their photos of the remaining name panel, but none of the shots are pefectly square on, so there’s still some distortion trying to scale it as precisely as possible.

It’s also really frustrating that not all the model footage used in the show is included on the DVD bonuses. I know some footage of original model was used in Skipper, but I’d really love to know if that’s restored/upscaled archival stock or actually re-digitised from original filmstock. Because if that 35mm filmstock still exists, it would be far more detailed than anything publically available.
