In the 18 months I’ve had a Laptop go to silicon heaven along with two mobile phones and an mp3 player. Put simply I’m short on shiny gadgetry and I figured since almost all of us here are geeks on one thing or another that there’s bound to be an unhealthy amount of tech-savvy aboot this hoose. I’m not in a position to go out and spend hundreds, but I am prepared to sell myself down the hire-purchase / pay-monthly route for a bit of material awesome. So does anyone swear by a particular network, brand, system. Is anyone on or aware of a fantastic deal etc. Basically discussion of all things gadgetry plz. Anybody especially happy with their mobile deal for example? October 6, 2009 at 11:28 pm #104199 Seb PatrickKeymaster I hate to say it, but… the iPhone 3GS is a special bit of kit. I still remain to be convinced of Apple’s ability to make computers, but they’re damned good at making portable devices – at least, portable devices that ingenious developers want to make quite superb applications for. However, I wouldn’t recommend doing what I’ve done and jumping in with O2 on a ?44 a month 2-year contract just before they lose their exclusivity and thus get drawn into an inevitable price war with Vodafone and Orange ;-) So I’d recommend seeing how that all shakes out, if it does so in the next couple of months. Although, even if they’re the cheapest option, DON’T go with Orange. O2 are fine, especially if they’re coerced into bringing their prices down. But if Vodafone make it in any way affordable, then an iPhone + their network will be an unbeatable combination. October 7, 2009 at 12:08 am #104205 Ben PaddonParticipant I hated Vodafone when i was in the UK. Their services continually failed to work for me. I was on a PAYG mobile and they regularly “lost” my credit immediately after I’d enter the code. Plus I’d often call my voicemail to be greeted by an automated voice that said, “Thank you for calling Vodafone. Goodbye!” and hung up on. AT&T over here may not be much better than that, but at least they get the bloody job done. October 7, 2009 at 2:08 am #104217 The PerformingMonkeyParticipant > the iPhone 3GS is a special bit of kit If by ‘special’ you mean ‘oh I’ve got this iPhone and I’m gonna spend 59 minutes of my lunch hour pissing about with various apps that I didn’t pay for on full volume annoying everyone else’ then yes, it is indeed ‘special’. Look! look! it’s a drum machine app!! No wait, you’re tilting it wr…you’re not tilting it enough that way…tap it now…NOW! oh give it here, you’re fucking useless! I bet there isn’t an app where you can eat someone’s arsehole. There should be. October 7, 2009 at 5:16 am #104220 Pete Part ThreeParticipant iPhone 3GS is awesome. But iTunes remains the spawn of Satan. October 7, 2009 at 7:35 am #104225 Ian SymesKeymaster A far better phone is the HTC G1, better known as the Google Phone. It does everything the iPhone does and far far more, has its own App Store equivalent and is far cheaper. I got it for ?35 a month, that’s with 700 minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited internet and the phone chucked in for free. October 7, 2009 at 7:45 am #104226 Pete Part ThreeParticipant Yeah, not as purty though. October 7, 2009 at 8:28 am #104231 Seb PatrickKeymaster And it’s on T-Mobile. If the G1 had been on ANY other network (well, except Orange), I’d probably have gone for it. Although I question the phrase “does everything the iPhone does and far far more”. Each do things that the other doesn’t. And while, yes, it does have its own app store equivalent, there are a LOT of brilliant apps on the iPhone that aren’t available for Android. The promise of a few apps in particular was another factor in swaying me towards it. (Yes, I’m talking about PocketAlan and iTed). But I’m not suddenly some Apple evangelist, and the thing certainly isn’t without its flaws (it’s got the worst battery life of any portable device I’ve ever owned). But unless Nokia really pull something out of the bag with the N97 (and I was tempted by that, too, but read some pretty poor reviews), then the iPhone and the G1 basically piss all over any other smartphone that’s out there. October 7, 2009 at 8:41 am #104232 Seb PatrickKeymaster Also, because I’m a pedantic fucker : the HTC G1, better known as the Google Phone. It’s actually the HTC Dream, better known as the T-Mobile G1. October 7, 2009 at 10:19 am #104241 Ian SymesKeymaster Yeah, not as purty though. Mine is – it’s got a picture of my cat as the wallpaper. And sliding the screen up to reveal the keyboard is a very nice action. October 7, 2009 at 11:12 am #104246 siParticipant This seems as good a place as any to mention this: Looking forward to Micro Men (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00n5b92) on BBC4 tomorrow night. It stars Alexander Armstrong and Martin Freeman, and I’m sure I saw Peter Davison in the ad as well. October 7, 2009 at 6:47 pm #104233 Tarka DalParticipant Mobile wars. Awesome. I’ll look into both suggestions so thanks. Do either come with much in the way of memory? As mentioned somewhere up there my MP3 player is on it’s last legs too so I’m considering a phone that can double-up on that front. Thoughts? October 7, 2009 at 7:04 pm #104213 ori-STUDFARMParticipant Apparently, Apple have a big say when it comes to setting the price of thier devices. Look at the price of the iPod. It’s pretty much the same wherever you go. I think it’ll remain the same with the phones. They’ll all decide not to undercut eachother. And there was me thinking that price fixing was illegal!! October 7, 2009 at 9:19 pm #104260 Pete Part ThreeParticipant >it?s got the worst battery life of any portable device I?ve ever owned Get a Juice Pack. Adds about 75% extra life to it and not a bad little case either. >Do either come with much in the way of memory? The iPhone is essentially a iPod Touch with a phone on it. My iPhone’s 32GB which is enough for a reasonably large music collection and a fair few videos. October 7, 2009 at 9:25 pm #104261 Ian SymesKeymaster The G1 has expandable memory – you can stick any size SD card into it. October 8, 2009 at 2:51 am #104267 The PerformingMonkeyParticipant > you can stick any size SD card into it. That’s what she, er, nevermind… As far as phones go I’m happy with my N95 8GB. I was considering ‘upgrading’ to the N97 but it looks like Nokia have fucked it up. No doubt they’ll release an improved version like the N95 8GB was to the N95, except they need to make bigger improvements than that. But what does it matter. What does ANY of it MATTER??? I always slap myself down(…) when I start obsessing over STUFF. You simply don’t need this and that gadget. Like I said before, you only essentially want it to piss other people off by shoving it in their faces(…). Do you seriously need a spirit level app?? I don’t. I want a phone.
