That model is one motor and an elaborate Mr. Bean-style chair-and-pulley system away from being a workable Carbug 2.0.

Statistically, there is definitely a non-zero number of people who were big fans of Red Dwarf in the 90s whose first exposure to the Dave era was Stellar Rescue and still didn’t realize there were new episodes.

Still think it’s a huge missed opportunity for a fantastically scaled model shoot if GNP bought it and did it up a little bit.

Of course they’d have to go back to the original (and frankly, better) Starbug but it’d be worth it for a 1:5 or so scale model to launch off an escarpment or something, would also look great for a water stunt if they lobbed it in the sea.

Not massively accurate details, mind. It obviously wasn’t built for filming, and in what way is Stellar Rescue a “season trailer”? There hasn’t even been a “season” of Red Dwarf since!

You could do some decent forced perspective shots with it in the background of scenes so it looked full size and further away. Of course this wouldn’t work with the redesigned XI and XII Starbug as they look different, which raises the question of why they built that version in the first place. I just hope it ends up somewhere nice, not rotting in a field under a tarpaulin somewhere.

Series AA has been held up in a legal limbo since 2019. According to Robert, a Blu-ray is coming out next spring.
