I’ve never really discussed Spaced, or seen it obsessively scrutinised like some shows, so something I’ve always wondered is: is series two generally considered to be much inferior to the first, or was that just my experience?

I don’t think it’s quite as good, but “much inferior” is probably a bit further than I would go. I remember thinking that the references to specific aspects of geek culture were a bit more overplayed and on-the-nose in the second series – The Matrix and Robot Wars/Fight Club episodes in particular – but I still enjoyed it.

Could be dependent on when/how you watched it?

I first saw it at uni, in 2005 (having loved Shaun of the Dead) and was able to binge straight through. As a certainly less-discerning 18 year old, I lapped it up and obsessed over it, don’t recall noticing a drop in quality as such, just the shinier visuals/colour palette.

Re-watched a couple of years ago and again, don’t recall thinking there was an obvious drop. But those ingrained nostalgia memories can do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to your old faves.

Almost the same for me, except it was the end of 2004 and I bought the series one DVD and obsessed over it for what might have been as long as a month before getting series two. It felt more stilted and I guess soapy, fewer classics when most of series 1 was instantly iconic. Felt a bit similar to going from series 1 to 2 of Twin Peaks, except it didn’t get as bad as that did.

You all know that Red Dwarf is my favourite… thing. Like, completely. My life without Red Dwarf in it almost doesn’t bear thinking about.

But as far as sitcoms go, I think Spaced might actually be my favourite. 25 years, and I’ve rewatched it over and over, so many times. Never gets boring. And even though I’m five years or so younger than Tim, Daisy et al, was never really into that type of music during the 90s, or had that type of lifestyle, I just always felt so comfortable with the show. I bought the soundtrack, and still think I’m cool for liking the modern music before realising it’s 25 years old. And The Staunton Lick still always brings a lump to my throat.

Of course, one of the only things that upsets me more is the US pilot.

I’ve always preferred series 2 to be honest, but then I saw that first, which is often how that goes with your preferred iteration of a thing.

I managed to catch a few episodes some years back, and I have to say, don’t believe the hype. Despite the name, it’s actually set in contemporary London, and they don’t go to space even once. At least not in the episodes I saw.

If you really want to see Simon Pegg in space, there’s a whole trilogy of Star Trek movies that will do that for you. And if you specifically want it to be a comedy/have Nick Frost in it, ‘Paul’ has you covered (he doesn’t actually go to space in that, but he does meet a alion, so that’s just as good). Ergo ‘Spaced’ is pointless.

Spaced is actually the prequel to Hyperdrive

‘Spaced’ is clearly referencing the kerning in the show’s typeface, idiots.

I mean just look at this DVD cover. Flagrant false advertising. It would have been more honest to call Red Dwarf “The Fantastic Adventures of Frank Todhunter”.
