IF YOU’RE READING THIS, CAPPSY HASN’T FIXED THE POST YET TO LET THE VIDEOS THROUGH. EITHER THAT OR HE FORGOT TO ERASE THIS TEXT. IF I’M HONEST, I THINK HE JUST FORGOT.

Thought it’d be a good idea to make a thread devoted to creative projects themed around the show. I’ll start with a video I tweeted not long after TPL that Doug himself gave a like (fuck you, I win G&T) where I tried to replicate the grayscale effect as originally envisioned.

Then we have an incredibly stupid parody of Remastered from a couple years back:

And finally for now, a CG Starbug fly-by I put together a decade ago (not my model):

I’m not crazy about the lens flares but I got the lighting pretty good in a way I’ve never since been able to replicate.

Okay, fuck it, have this for free. Unfinished story from 20 years ago, that I’d planned to send to BTL. I thought that I’d:

    a) gotten round to actually finishing it (obviously didn’t); and

    b) already put it on here somewhere (can’t see it).

But I can’t find it, so here you go.

Apologies if I’ve linked to it on some old blog, or if it is, indeed, up on here somewhere. Whatever.

There were plenty of Red Dwarf references and homage in my juvenile comic series Rez & Sparky about two time-travelling birds, though I don’t think it was ever word for word (that was probably because I only had a few videos). Lots of Inquisitor / Bill & Ted time travel logic.

But then I bought my first Smegazine and was inspired to draw a Red Dwarf comic of my own. So naturally, rather than just do that, I instead created the crossover everyone had been waiting for, featuring mash-ups of all your favourite characters!

That was as far as it got, mainly because I couldn’t be bothered to keep drawing a Kryten duck and stuff, but also probably finding it hard to muster the enthusiasm to loosely adapt an episode I hadn’t seen in a few years.

I bought that first Smegazine in 1999, so can’t pretend I was any younger than 13 when this event happened.

    Just because.

(I’ve got a folder full of funny little RD doodles, but I’m not going to stick them all up, promise.)

    – – – – – – – – – – –

Going back to mash-ups – the first time I met Danny was at DJ 2002, and on the coach home we were determined we were definitely going to do a Red Dwarf/South Park mash-up.

I didn’t hear anybody say no digital art, so…

Here’s one from 2015. Excuse the roughness, I didn’t have a proper editing software at the time (it’s actually made in PowerPoint)
Also excuse the CGI models. It was a phase.

I’ve got some more hanging around on old drives somewhere, I might dig them out at some point.

Found this online, noticed a few blemishes and gave it some touch-ups (and pasted Craig’s face over Will Smith). No idea who made it but damn if it isn’t quality.

(Yes KT, I know the lighting’s not right, gimme a break I can only work with what’s already here)

I also started drawing a strip intended for BTL that I never wound up finishing (though I did have some stuff in there). Here is the only page I did… probably for the best I abandoned it, given the era I chose to focus on!

Ha! I think I always tend to draw Starbug a bit fat, maybe I’m subconsciously influenced by Tikka.

I like it! Every artist who draws Starbug without incorporating a 3D model draws it with some part of it just slightly off in a way that gives it character unique to that artist, like you sometimes see one with slightly too big legs or the segments are a bit too far apart. So when I look at that I can see a bit of the artist in it, which is cool.

Not my art but I purchased this at a nerd crafts sale last weekend at the Edmonton Expo Centre.

They say the Red Dwarf collection was by popular demand. My wife put the Starbug one on her chain as she calls her car Carbug (recall she’s the one who voted BTE 2 her favourite in the last two polls).

The resin piece is by her friend who was also selling at the sale.

    Yeah, good stuff!

Just realised I haven’t posted this here, may as well!

I love that. Have you uploaded it to any of the T-Shirt printing sites yourself? Feels a bit rum if other people have ripped off your design.

Yeah, I never planned to sell it but the sheer number out there printed from a low quality jpeg grabbed off the Internet really bothered me, perfectionist that I am. 😅

So you can buy it on shirts, as a print, magnets, pins etc.

I’ve posted older WIP versions of this meme on the forum before but I finally got around to publishing the version I decided was the final cut. Make sure if you use the player here to turn the video quality up because it’ll default to 360p and nuke the framerate.

    Ah thanks, you’re very kind.

No sadly I’ve been rubbish at uploading stuff over the years apart from occasional bits and pieces like the ones I share here. Most of my art remains purely physical in a big portfolio that rarely sees the light of day!

As well as Red Dwarf stuff, a common recurring theme is Spider-Man – I must have drawn that character more than any other over the years.

I think I’m getting closer to ideal proportions although it still looks a bit wonky in places.

Cow Vindaloo: A Print-and-Play Red Dwarf Card Game

Plagiarised from Stew by Jason Glover. It’s mostly a reskin, but I’ve mucked around with a few things and presumably broken it.

This is a two-player card game in 18 cards (plus 6-card expansion) based on the popular Red Dwarf episode ‘Pete, Part Two.’ This has not been play tested.

    Story:

Pete the sparrow has turned into a T-rex and has eaten the Time Wand! Help the Red Dwarf crew to make a vindaloo loaded with laxatives so the T-rex will do a shit. Let’s get that Time Wand out!

    Setup – Base Game:

Place the 5 crew cards face up in a row (any order):

    – Lister

    – Rimmer

    – Cat

    – Kryten

    – Kochanski

Shuffle the 13 ingredient cards and place them face down in a draw pile:

    – Carrot x3

    – Chilli x4

    – Bran x2

    – Cow x1

    – Fish x1

    – Vimto x1

    – Time Wand x1

The player who most recently had diarrhoea goes first.

    Goal:

Score the vindaloo when you guess it will be worth 12 points or more to win (or trick your opponent into scoring it prematurely so they lose).

    Gameplay:

Take turns to draw the top card from the draw pile, without your opponent seeing it. Then you must either:

Add it to the vindaloo: Place it face down in the vindaloo pile, or

Give it to the crew: Place it face down on one crew member. The crew may be given their preferred ingredient or any ingredient, which may affect scoring of the vindaloo at the end. Once a crew member is covered, no more cards can be added to that crew member that round. Throwing a carrot at a crew member kills them, as the carrots are the size of tree trunks.

If a player thinks the score of 12 points has been reached and the vindaloo is ready, they shout “Vindaloo!”

    Scoring:

Scoring occurs in the following order:

    1) Lister inspects the vindaloo: If he has not been killed by a carrot, Lister will inspect the vindaloo. If it contains any bran, he will decline and the vindaloo gains 3 bonus points. If there is no bran, Lister scoffs some and the vindaloo loses 3 points.

    2) Check the crew: Check whether the crew have been fed their preferred ingredient, killed by a carrot, or other shit as detailed and follow what it says on their card.

    3) Score the vindaloo: Add the total of the remaining vindaloo pile. If the final score is 12 or more, the T-rex shits everywhere and the player who called vindaloo wins! If it’s less than 12, the player who called vindaloo loses and everyone presumably dies!

Cow Vindaloo: Orange Ice Pops and Coca-Cola Expansion

This mini expansion adds 6 more cards to break the game further.

    Setup – Expansion:

    – Hollister joins the other crew cards

    – The Orange Ice Pops (x4) and Coca-Cola (x1) are shuffled into the ingredient deck

    Scoring:

    – Hollister inspects the vindaloo after Lister, but before the other crew have their turns

    – If the Time Wand is used on Hollister, he inspects the vindaloo a total of 6 times, with cumulative point deductions

This one’s just Red Dwarf Love Letter with the theme of wooing Ace Rimmer at the Mimas Test Base or getting as close to him as you can. With only 16 cards, I didn’t want to break it with creativity. Rules for the standard 2-4 player Love Letter game are available online.
