April 25, 2009 at 11:00 am #98088 siParticipant My over-riding memory is of “…that is until Bert Raccoon wakes up!” Brilliant. Jonathan Ross is giving series 1 & 2 away as prizes this morning – I was stunned when I heard. April 25, 2009 at 12:36 pm #98095 p2p_productionsParticipant >Epic theme tune. Bloody hell, took me a minute to remember. Never thought I’d see this again… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXsjzcC4Jdw&fmt=18 April 25, 2009 at 1:05 pm #98096 thomasaevansParticipant I remember the music in the show being very depressing. I always associate this with being sad. Whats that about. April 25, 2009 at 1:50 pm #98099 Ian SymesKeymaster I was on about this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usFFKNRB2z8&feature=related April 25, 2009 at 1:58 pm #98100 Seb PatrickKeymaster <controversy>See, I think the Raccoons is one of those shows that people remember more fondly than they’d think of it if they actually sat down and watch it. I remember it as being tedious and more than a bit goody-goody and cheesy. “Run With Us” was great but it seems to be the main reason people remember it.</controversy> April 25, 2009 at 2:02 pm #98101 hummingbirdParticipant Oh thanks, guys. Now I feel ancient. 8P April 25, 2009 at 2:27 pm #98104 PhilParticipant Why are raccoons hanging around with the nudists from Bender’s Big Score? April 25, 2009 at 2:30 pm #98105 MuzzyParticipant Yeah I have fond memories but I suspect Seb may be right. Haven’t watched it for about 12 years I would think and it seems like the kind of thing that wouldn’t age well. Do I risk spoiling the memories by trying to find some clips on youtube or summat? April 25, 2009 at 2:52 pm #98106 Pheonix11Participant Hey Seb, it’s a fair comment, but I do remember it being a bit Cheesey and Goody-goody, so for me watching it again wont spoil my memories. Si, Thank you, I knew it was due at some point, now I can go get it. Also your posting this thread has reminded me of this fab Seventh Doctor and Ace McShane tribute vid, Enjoy: :D April 25, 2009 at 4:51 pm #98112 NakrophileParticipant Raccoons! But I always preferred Bucky O’Hare. April 25, 2009 at 6:13 pm #98120 Ben PaddonParticipant I hated Raccoons. It was so depressing. April 25, 2009 at 7:14 pm #98132 Danny StephensonKeymaster But I always preferred Bucky O?Hare. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CVxefOBUiw Oh my yes. April 25, 2009 at 8:06 pm #98136 Joey TORDFCParticipant I hated Raccoons too. Generally most cartoons annoyed me as a child. April 25, 2009 at 8:09 pm #98138 Pete Part ThreeParticipant >I was on about this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usFFKNRB2z8&feature=related Fuck, that’s good. I can still remember the words! April 25, 2009 at 11:21 pm #98151 DessieParticipant Bucky O’ Hare kicks the shit out of all other kids cartoons. April 26, 2009 at 1:42 am #98154 pfmParticipant I agree that it was too ‘nice’, well the bits with the Raccoons were at least. I always wanted Cyril Sneer’s evil plans to work and for the Raccoons to lose! And Cedric should have been on his father’s side instead of with friggin Ralph and Melissa all the time! He also has the most annoying voice in anything ever. I seem to remember it being on just before Live & Kicking, is that right. 8.35am or something. But I much preferred stuff like Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers (aka the greatest television series ever made. Trapdoor, Bananaman and Superted aside, but that goes without saying) April 26, 2009 at 1:44 am #98155 Danny StephensonKeymaster and Mask, don’t forget Mask… and Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors… April 26, 2009 at 2:26 am #98156 pfmParticipant Thundercats, Captain Planet (with bloody Geordi LaForge as a voice in it!), Defenders of the Earth, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck… April 26, 2009 at 4:37 am #98160 Mr FlibbleParticipant I had a total geek out on this a couple of weeks ago. I don’t think it’ll stand the test of time though. That’s probably why it was on in the morning – so you weren’t awake enough to see how bad it really was. But go and read its Wikipedia page, it had some mildly interesting points. Oh my yes. That’s Futurama, not Bucky O’Hare. April 26, 2009 at 6:35 am #98161 Ben PaddonParticipant I am, as I type, watching Freakazoid!. It’s not as funny as I remember, but the first Lord Bravery short is absolutely brilliant. April 26, 2009 at 9:37 am #98167 DaveParticipant >and Mask, don?t forget Mask? I while back, when richer, I bought the first half of this on DVD. Every episode is the same, the formula never varies, I loved it. Suspiciously as you reach the end of the boxset they suspiciously start having accidents and needing to have their vehicles replaced. Anyone would have thought there were new toys ready for the shelves… April 26, 2009 at 12:24 pm #98174 NakrophileParticipant The Bucky O’Hare figure on my desk has been telling me for ages to get the boxset of the series. I think I will listen to him soon. April 26, 2009 at 2:35 pm #98176 ChrisMParticipant I was never into these particular cartoons. The older stuff, Tom and Jerry and the Warner Brothers stuff (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck,Samedy Sam, Road Runner and Wile E Coyote, etc) that was the stuff I liked.* Oh and Pop-eye and Droopy were pretty good too on occasion. Probably showing my age there. *Strangely, while the Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck et al, are big icons, I never saw much of their cartoons on the box. April 26, 2009 at 3:20 pm #98177 Danny StephensonKeymaster I was never into these particular cartoons. Popeye’s Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves, was one of my favorites. Also I’ve been steadily buying those Looney Tunes Golden Collections, with loads of behind the scenes work on the cartoons, voice sessions and tons of comentaries. They’re awesome. April 26, 2009 at 3:34 pm #98180 ChrisMParticipant Actually for ‘more modern’ cartoons, I did rather like the Animaniacs. But then that programme had the old style WB anarchic feel to it. I might keep my eye out for those Looney Tunes collections. April 26, 2009 at 3:43 pm #98182 Danny StephensonKeymaster The Animaniacs was good because it wasn’t completely aimed at kids. It also had thoughful animations which taught kids abotu America, it’s history and it’s heritage. It was also funny as hell. April 26, 2009 at 4:56 pm #98184 PhilParticipant April 26, 2009 at 5:55 pm #98186 DaveParticipant >http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC1qkLn6IRI Where’s Wales? April 26, 2009 at 6:32 pm #98188 Danny StephensonKeymaster http://www.last.fm/music/Spray/_/Run+With+Us I found this years ago but reglected to mention it. April 26, 2009 at 6:36 pm #98189 Nick RParticipant I only really caught the tail-end of the ’80s cartoon crazes: I was really into Turtles, Ghostbusters and Thundercats, but not He-Man or Transformers. Sadly I never saw many episodes Bucky O’Hare or Dungeons and Dragons. But I really loved the pop-culture-referencing, freeze-frame-gag-filled cartoons that came along in the early ’90s in the wake of The Simpsons and Who Framed Roger Rabbit: Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Taz-Mania, Freakazoid, Rocko’s Modern Life, Earthworm Jim (although I haven’t really enjoyed EWJ as much since I found Doug Tennapel’s blog and read some of his opinions…). I spent far, far too long learning the words to all those “list” songs. Somehow the fact that I didn’t get half the the movie references actually added to the enjoyment (and made me feel like those cartoons were more sophisticated and grown-up than they probably were). The blog Something Old, Nothing New has done lots of posts about behind-the-scenes stuff on those ’90s Warner Bros cartoons… well worth reading: http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2004/07/freakazoid.html http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2004/06/animaniacs-part-1.html http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2004/06/animaniacs-part-2.html http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2005/12/puddin.html http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2008/03/beginning-of-end-for-wba.html http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2008/10/taz-mania.html http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2007/11/squash-and-stretch-and-sing-off-key.html http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2007/03/you-cant-write-drawing.html http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2005/12/best-gag-credits-ever.html http://zvbxrpl.blogspot.com/2005/10/pip-pumphandles-deep-thoughts.html I loved the late-80s Mighty Mouse cartoon, but I was never into Ren and Stimpy. But John K’s blog is a great resource for anyone interested in animation – as long as you can put up with the things he has to say about 99% of cartoons made since the 1960s… April 26, 2009 at 10:03 pm #98203 RidleyParticipant I am, as I type, watching Freakazoid!. It?s not as funny as I remember… And Roger and the Rottentrolls is still funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t95lOkxKM-A April 28, 2009 at 11:47 am #98246 NakrophileParticipant Looney Toons are amazing. Bugs Bunny is such a slut. April 28, 2009 at 12:14 pm #98249 Seb PatrickKeymaster The Wile E. Coyote cartoons (I know that’s not their real name, but it’s what they are) are the greatest slapstick in any medium, in any genre, ever. April 29, 2009 at 3:54 am #98299 BlisschickParticipant >The Animaniacs was good because it wasn?t completely aimed at kids. It also had thoughful animations which taught kids abotu America, it?s history and it?s heritage. It was also funny as hell. I have the theme song as my ringtone. My kids think I’m nuts, but I loved it, along with Tiny Toons. I think I remember reading the actual target audience was college age, if I’m correct. There were a lot of cultural jokes that would have gone over the average 10 year old’s head. My sister and I grew up with Thundercats, He-Man, Smurfs (which I hated, but she loved), etc. I just put the entire 4 disc series of Speed Racer on my Netflix queue. I loved Speed and the Mach 5! April 29, 2009 at 9:57 am #98306 Danny StephensonKeymaster Anyone remember “Pole Position”? April 29, 2009 at 10:36 am #98310 peas_and_cornParticipant The Atari game? April 29, 2009 at 10:45 am #98314 Danny StephensonKeymaster No no, the TV show. i remember a crazy cat creature that used to race with them. EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NpgsUOKQs8 That’s what i’m on about! April 29, 2009 at 2:30 pm #98330 ChrisMParticipant Heh. I’ve never seen that, although the tune vaguely rang a bell.
