If a main RD character was replaced by a similar character

I wondered at the time of Series 7, why didn’t they replace Rimmer with a similar male nerd hologram? Like make Don Warrington’s character from Holoship a new regular character (along with Kochanski), and reveal he was a Dwarf science officer or something. And in the event Craig Charles had to leave, what if they replaced him with a similar “likable dude”, played by someone like Simon Pegg or Kris Marshall (to think of 2 similar actors of the time). Introduce some slob they find on a derelict who was also stranded alone. Or another Cat or Mechanoid. JOHN BARROWMAN as a Cat or RICHARD AYOADE as a mechanoid. Could this have ever worked?

Not really, or we’d just compare them. I like that they went for a different type of character and dynamic with Kochanski to mix it up, so she doesn’t really feel like a replacement for Rimmer. Her competence and bad, geeky jokes rather than the less endearing spoiled, posh stuff.

It’s far more interesting introducing a new character that changes the dynamics and has different reactions to things. 

Otherwise you may as well just recast, which would be terrible for Red Dwarf
