More to the point, would there be anybody turning up? Once a month or so the Broken Drummers, a Discworld meet-up group, get together in the Essex Serpent in Covent Garden for drinks, a quiz if we feel like it, swapping stamps and general debauchery until we’re thrown out. Quite a few of this lot are fans of Dwarf too as it happens. The average turn out is a dozen, sometimes as much as twenty, occasional vistors from forn parts as and when they pass through. Covent Garden is quite convenient, central, accessible from the Central and Northern lines via Leicester Square, walkable in a few mins from Embankment or Charing Cross. The Essex Serpent is pretty thinly used on all but a Friday, we tend to occupy the cellar (which looks retro-70’s, but was just done in the 70’s and has never changed since) and talk wierd until everybody else leaves (we book a couple of tables down there from 7.00pm onwards in fact). Is this an acceptable idea? Or do you get enough of meeting each other IRL once a year at the con and would rather just cross the street and avoid eye contact for the rest of the time? August 8, 2007 at 3:28 pm #124403 Danny StephensonKeymaster There are Red Dwarf meets occasionally. I met Cappsy at one. But, really, for Dwarf, it’s DJ that’s the meeting place. To be honest you get to spend three days with like minded people for ‘drinks and debauchery’ (Optional). I’m from Leeds, So i’m not able to go down to London for a few hours if it suits, me, because as Ian points out quite judiciously, i’m a northern twat, and therefore tight fisted… Meets are quality though. I’d love to do them more, but there’s no one really on here that lives close enough… August 8, 2007 at 4:39 pm #124404 PhilParticipant You can come visit me, Danny. I’m just a short naked jog across the Atlantic. August 8, 2007 at 8:05 pm #124408 Danny StephensonKeymaster Nice one! August 9, 2007 at 12:11 am #124410 Jonathan CappsKeymaster I’d definitely be up for something like this, so long as it’s sometime this month, as I’m moving back up North in September. August 9, 2007 at 1:54 am #124412 pfmParticipant This would be like the Inklings group, right? As long as no-questions-asked blindfolded sexual rituals are performed alongside lively literary discussion, I’m there. August 9, 2007 at 1:01 pm #124418 Danny StephensonKeymaster > I?m moving back up North in September. ARE YOU REALLY?!? August 9, 2007 at 1:47 pm #124421 Jonathan CappsKeymaster Yeah, my time in London was justa one year work placement thing as part of my degree. August 9, 2007 at 2:06 pm #124423 BazParticipant Geeez, better give you a good send off before you leave civilisation and say goodbye to hot water, good dentistry and soft toilet paper. August 9, 2007 at 2:37 pm #124424 Danny StephensonKeymaster Ahem, there’s nothing wrong with the dentistry in the North, my tooth isn’t complaining. The toilet paper is firm but fair, and who needs hot water anyway? August 22, 2007 at 2:06 pm #124532 Joey TORDFCParticipant I’d be up for it, although it’s not like I’m starved of seeing this bunch of drunkards. August 22, 2007 at 8:31 pm #124549 DaveParticipant Yeah, sounds good.
