So recently I was showing a friend “Camille” and they were thrown by this moment, which is the start of the scene after Camille reveals her blobness and agrees to go out with Kryten and asks “flats or heels?” We’re in the bunkroom and Lister just enters and crosses the room, and… what is the point of lingering briefly on this? The emphasis and Craig’s lost facial expression… Is it just wonky direction or deliberate for some reason like in Thanks for the Memory where a scene starts with a sleeping Lister hanging his arm off the bunk which wakes up Rimmer? It’s just awkward, and now that it was pointed out to me I can’t unsee how much it sticks out.

    What even is this?

It may have been a bit ham fisted but I think it was an establishing shot to show the rest of them were a bit baffled by the whole Kryten/Camille thing.

The script in Son of Soup describes it like this:

    20. Int. Sleeping quarters. Evening

CAT and RIMMER are lounging around. LISTER comes in.

CAT: I can’t believe he’s really going through with this.

So Lister entering the room was specified there, and this was just a slightly odd way of directing it.

They’re all still in the same positions as the previous scene so having Lister walk in like he’s gone to do something else & come back makes it clear that time has passed.

Totally get that with the time passing (which also had been established by the exterior shot but whatever), and also that it was specified in the script that he enters. The execution though… I’ve never seen someone cross a room so effortfully.

He looks like he’s walking onto set two hours late and hoping nobody notices.

He’s going straight to the fridge for some booze (both in and out of universe)

A show brimming with sophisticated, intelligent humour. A thinking man’s comedy.

“Walks” really should have been one of the themed DVD featurettes. You could just dub some Pantera onto that gif and you’d basically be sorted.

I want to make this now but if I uploaded it to YouTube it would be immediately blocked.

Me when a colleague I’ve spoken to a total of 2 times posts in Teams that it was their birthday at the weekend and they’ve left some jam doughnuts in the kitchen if anyone wants any

Oh my god I love that clip. The kicker is the baby in the walker that comes barreling in seconds later (like why would anyone let a baby have that, no mortal should have that much power).

Given the apparent effect of that shot, the walk would be the last of my worries.

I like how that seems to end with the Cat asking what the hell is going on.

On a tangent, I’m sure it’s only in Camille that the corridor opposite the entrance to the sleeping quarters is walled off. In ever other episode of the series, filmed before and after, it leads into another corridor heading away.

    #303458

Looks like they’ve just closed the door, maybe because they not another set back there

the layout of that space is different in 3 vs 4/5 too I think. Maybe Camille was more like 3 and then changed?

Depends on which was shot first. I don’t actually remember the filming order of IV so I’m generally not offering any useful input here.

Camille was shot fourth. A week after Meltdown, making more sense of Kryten’s obedience to Rimmer in that episode. Three weeks after Justice, making less sense of “I’m really getting the hang of this lie mode” in that episode.

Well then, they must have just closed that door as there was some guest set in Camille using the space.  Maybe Parrots.
