May or may not be of interest, but over on Twitter I’ve been doing some work on Series I set recreations – including much observation, supposition and new research. I don’t want to overwhelm this place with it, but there’s a taste below, and the link to the full thing too. Some of you may like it!

    Cheers,

    Andrew

This is really well done.  Not only the details in the sets but you seemed to have nailed the layouts too

    #298788

Fucking hell, Andrew Orton! As I live and breathe! I wish I’d known you were here too lol, I’ve been a fan of your work on YouTube since probably 2012. And as ever, your set recreations are on top form. What a treat!

Thank you both! I don’t post regularly, but thought this might be of interest! It’s the culmination of some years’ work…

    These look excellent. Great job.

Out of interest, do we know where other rooms used in Series 1 were situated (like the cinema set)?

They were pre-records which would likely have taken the space occupied the following day by the audience seating.

Seriously though, very very well done. Amazing work.

Amazing, makes it easier to imagine being there. You’ve obviously paid more attention to this, but the Drive Room vending machine in Waiting for God looks more like it’s jutting out into the room in the episode, giving the impression of a freestanding unit that Lister’s moved there (even if I realise now it’s really inline with the wall piece and they probably just moved that).

Oh yes, another Twitter follower here, hello!

Unfortunately you’ve replaced Lister’s acoustic guitar with with looks like a Gibson SG…? So I refuse to even give these a second glance.

Really, though, superb work – look forward to whatever comes along next, the WIPs have piqued my excitement already!

    Cheers, everyone!

@warbodog: Some of the walls were moveable and it’s possible the vending machine was a little more out. It’s difficult to be entirely accurate…

@International Debris: I couldn’t find a good guitar model and I couldn’t be bothered to make one! Obviously the whole thing is rendered worthless. :)

I’ll be honest, based on the Blu-Ray transfer my memory of the guitar is that it looked more like this.

Hell, what even is there to say? “I wish you’d included the toilet?” Well, then, I wish you’d included the toilet.

Thank you! I think I did actually build the toilet but it’s hidden :)

As to the Blu-rays, I was instrumental in getting disc reissues for the mis-transferred episodes, but sadly I didn’t think to pursue the contrast issues…

If you’re interested, I’ve also been doing some p̵o̵i̵n̵t̵l̵e̵s̵s̵ vital work on Red Dwarf I’s corridor signage:

I presume the signage discrepancy at the beginning of The End is to do with the mismatch between stuff taken from the original shoot for the episode and the stuff shot during the extensive later reshoots?

    #298949

I think the real question is: what is the point in John Hoare any more when this kind of thing exists elsewhere?

    #298961
    solidbronze
    Participant

John is a friend and valued colleague!

The discrepacy in The End is not a result of re-shoots: neither version of the remainder of the corridor scene uses the same sign as the opening shot. I think they just swapped signs during the original recording. Dona diStefano keeping her eyes open, I reckon.

Brilliant work Andrew! Nice to meet someone else who also enjoys painstakingly recreating details of Red Dwarf in 3D that were almost certainly knocked out in a 5 minute panic by a stressed art director, 30+ years ago.

Here’s the tax disc I made for my Blue Midget model:

Here’s the tax disc I made for my Blue Midget model:

Who governs space? Who collects the tax? What’s it used for? How is it calculated? Is there a space congestion charge (maybe in the vicinity of certain planets)? Is there a fuel tax on space vehicles that don’t rely on renewable energy or have ram scoops?

Incredible work. Obviously it’s the same logic for all the sets, but it’s especially uncanny to see 2 completely different ships neighbouring like this.

I know: and they share a corridor! Same thing happens for Series 4 and too: back corridor runs along the rear of the set and opens into both ships.

    #299163

I had never once considered the Atarbug set was adjacent to the bunk set

in IV and V the science room is in that position.  The corridor runs along the back but the door out of the bunk enters an ante room that the science room joins from the other side

I’d imagined that was probably the same in III just without the adjoining door and Starbug would either far left or far right of those two sets together

The Science Room is in the same position in S3, but it’s not erected every week (no standing sets in Manchester). It’s rather complex:

    Marooned: Starbug positioned as above.

Timeslides: Science Room positioned left of bunkroom. Starbug not used.

Backwards: Only the Starbug cockpit is used. The Science Room isn’t. Something else would be left of the bunkroom, but not sure what: maybe cockpit, the cafe set or the dressing room? Pub was probably pre-record.

Bodyswap: Everything was done without an audience and both the full Starbug and Science Room appear. Suspect one was in that position for the pre-record and the other for the record.

Polymorph: Science Room next to the bunkroom. Starbug doesn’t appear.

The Last Day: The Officer’s bar is next to the bunkroom. Starbug and the Science Room don’t appear.

    Here’s a rough S5.

The main reason both the Starbug and Science Room appear above is that there was much more space at Shepperton! Season 6 did similar:

Ah I forgot about Manchester not being standing sets.

These all look great though. I’ve always enjoyed trying to visualise the layout so seeing them like this is fantastic
