You’ve probably realised that some of them are Red Dwarf things that actually are from something else, or vice versa, like the gif I posted which is from a show called Star Cops. That little gizmo was a sort of talking handheld computer named Box.

The guy in the bath with Rimmer’s badge on his hat, albeit upside-down, is the captain of the ‘B’ Ark in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy TV series.

And in Dave’s post you can see that Kempton Park Pumping Station was used as a location for both Justice and the second series of GamesMaster.

Nonsense, I have it on good authority that it was “the impressive set built for Justice.”

Playing a bit of Yakuza 0 and this Dojima guy looks distractingly like Captain Lister

You can see the inspiration most clearly here, and the bunkroom off white rounded rectangles give similar Nostromo vibes.

This Alien corridor pic always reminds me so much of Series IV/V, which means I have some imagination at least.

Montague had a bit of it too, you can see a bit of Series II in that shot, the big pipes, plastic pallets, shapes, just light it a lot more and you’d see the similarities clearly imo.

Ah, don’t let’s get started on lighting. We’ll still be discussing it in February.

Nope, you’re gonna have to explain that one to me.

(I know, I’m one to talk.)

(Sure, Sega claims now that he’s a jerboa called Fang, but in my heart he’ll always be a weasel called Nack.)

This has bugged me since I first saw the episode on 18 Feb 1999. The back cover of Lister’s prop magazine reminds me of a real ad I’d seen in a magazine around that time. At the time I assumed they’d just used the back cover of a real magazine with that recognisable ad out of laziness. When I later realised that would be a ridiculous thing to do, I paid more attention and noticed it was actually different.

My obviously infallible memory of an advert from 26+ years ago is that it featured a similar-looking woman with similar posture and clothing (and maybe similar pigtail hair, unless I’ve conflated the two since), but there were some things whooshing around her relevant to the point of the ad, which might have been video game-based (but more generally promoting a console or magazine or something than a specific game). It also had a cooler colour palette.

Based on where I would have seen it, it might have been in the Official UK Playstation Magazine, but the Internet Archive helpfully doesn’t have any of the 1998 issues we actually had. This is more a tipofthetongue post, but that would involve me signing up for Reddit. Anyone know what I’m dribbling about?

Are you thinking of the Playstation alien girl thingy?

That came to mind when describing it, so it might be mixed in and corrupting the (vitally important) memory too. It might not be anything to do with PlayStation, but maybe football-game based.

I do know what you mean in that it looks very familiar, but I wonder whether as a pose and framing that is kind of just quite a popular choice for ads?

Everyone sat like that in the late 90s.

The name “Witch FM” popped into my head associated with the image, so now I think it was probably a poster or other local print ad I saw around at that time for a radio station in my area that the internet says only made limited broadcasts in 1999 and 2000. As the image was too obscure to be archived, I’ll just assume I was right about it being uncannily similar to the Red Dwarf one and ignore tangents of footballs and game consoles that make me appear less reliable.

The ‘moving photographs pegged on a line’ motif in the music video for Circle in the Sand by Belinda Carlisle is very reminiscent of Timeslides.

Very much so. Given the 1987 release date, it seems likely it could have been a direct influence.

Like a combination of an Eyeball & a Roundel. And I do know a sound effect that came from something else; – the Synth Sound Effect from Halley’s Comet in Dr Who’s Attack of the Cybermen got reused in the Credits of Backwards, as well as Power Rangers ZEO: Power active Math for the PC.

Nova 5 reused as a Space Base in the largely lost media Space Vets. (Low quality Internet Archive scan of BBC VFX: The Story of the BBC Visuals Effects Department, 1954-2003. Annoying that the book ends just before it could have chronicled modern Doctor Dwarf reuse).

The book also reckons the Nova 5 was likely part of the space station in Moonraker, but I can’t tell from screencaps. Various knobbly cylinder bits.
