Rimmer’s White Officer Uniform (Me2/Kryten/BTL)

I’ve just come across this little piece of history via Reddit …

The much ridiculed Palace Guard uniforms instituted at the White House in 1970 by Richard Nixon. They were quickly mothballed, and eventually sold to a high school marching band in Iowa. from uniformporn

Richard Nixon introduced a guard uniform for the Secret Service at the White House that turned out to be very unpopular so they got rid of it soon after.

I’m sure there are other uniforms similar to this out there in the world, probably without our own Armed Forced (Rimmer is referred to as an Admiral in BTL … so Navy?) but they strike a very very close resemblance no?

Could it be possible Rob and Doug deliberately chose to use this uniforms as a reference for Rimmer’s? Or complete coincidence?

Ah fair, when it didn’t post the first time I tried again a couple more times thinking something fucked up … then gave up.

I always assumed it was a straight down the line “An Officer and a Gentleman” thing, but Rob and Doug might have referenced it I suppose, maybe they were brought up at some point on Spitting Image if they were famously derided.
