The only one I remember is asking my mum what a Gynaecologist was when I was about 10 because I saw the word in the Smegazine. I don’t remember what she actually told me other than her first words of response being “why do you want to know?” Creator Topic Viewing 31 replies - 1 through 31 (of 31 total) Author Replies May 10, 2025 at 11:17 am #305825 DaveParticipant I had quite a long and awkward conversation with my parents about why I wasn’t allowed to buy the Let’s Get Out There And Twat It t-shirt. May 10, 2025 at 12:12 pm #305829 sleepeyParticipant I remember sitting on the carpet in a stranger’s living room as a tween, my parents having dragged me out to visit a family friend or a distant aunt or something. I’d brought the Programme Guide to read while the grownups chattered away for the requisite 15 or 16 hours. During a quiet moment I shuffled up to my mom and innocently asked “what does this mean”, pointing to the index entry for “transvestite”. She said she didn’t know. I considered opening the question to the floor, but my innate shyness pulled me back from the edge, and I returned to my corner with a shrug. May 10, 2025 at 2:33 pm #305832 PodeyParticipant Y’know, now you’ve said that, I’m almost certain mum’s answer to my Gynaecologist Q was “I don’t know” as well. 😅 May 10, 2025 at 2:33 pm #305833 PodeyParticipant I had quite a long and awkward conversation with my parents about why I wasn’t allowed to buy the Let’s Get Out There And Twat It t-shirt. Had a similar conversation. ”You can’t have that, it’s got a nasty word on it!” May 10, 2025 at 3:06 pm #305834 RidleyParticipant Never easy being raised Knights of Ni is twat? May 10, 2025 at 3:08 pm #305835 WarbodogParticipant I didn’t experience the awkwardness, as I didn’t see most episodes until I was already in secondary school environs, and my dad was always a bit too eager to explain those things anyway if he was around (usually in the form of checking “do you know what a 69 is?” and bringing me up to speed so he could pass on a joke about a Chinese prostitute, or providing a translation commentary for Roy “Chubby” Brown videos). Back to Red Dwarf, I probably had to ask him about cunnilingus in Cassandra. May 10, 2025 at 5:13 pm #305839 Renegade RobParticipant I definitely remember watching Cassandra at home during either middle school or early high school, and my Mom was throwing a get together later that day and one of her friends had already arrived and was just there as we were all chilling, but when Rimmer mentioned cunnilingus, the friend was really taken aback and was talking about it later at dinner, about how unexpected that was. May 10, 2025 at 5:16 pm #305840 TechnopeasantParticipant When I was 14 we were watching Robot Chicken with my mother and the bit came on that goes “If you are watching Robot Chicken and under eighteen then shame on your parents!” and we all lost it. My brother also once asked my parents what gay meant and they said they were guys who liked other guys. This confused him, but then he asked my eldest brother who succinctly explained they were guys who had sex with other guys and it all made sense. My mum specified it was when a man kisses another man. I guess she heard me using it in the Flintstones sense and decided it was time to not properly explain it. First time I heard that word – or rather, a pun based on it – was in Tomorrow Never Dies, which has Moneypenny say “You always were a cunning linguist, James.” I didn’t get it. A year or so later, The World is Not Enough was released, which ends with: “I thought Christmas only comes once a year.” I was too young and innocent to get that, too. May 10, 2025 at 8:31 pm #305853 TechnopeasantParticipant May 10, 2025 at 8:56 pm #305856 Ben SaundersParticipant I always thought that gag should have been “looks like Christmas came early”. May 10, 2025 at 9:01 pm #305857 DaveParticipant “I just pulled a Christmas cracker” May 10, 2025 at 9:23 pm #305858 Quinn: Clochebusters World ChampionParticipant “It’s usually John McClane that gets fucked by Christmas” May 11, 2025 at 12:03 am #305863 clemParticipant Spunks on her then says “Talk about a white Christmas.” May 11, 2025 at 12:06 am #305864 RushyParticipant My mom and I are in the middle of series 8. Pray for us. May 11, 2025 at 12:40 am #305868 MoonlightParticipant I remember when I was 11 or so, with really no conception of what it was actually supposed to mean, mimicking this gesture in school to mean something else and an adult got really offended. I’ve never in my life seen it outside of Red Dwarf so I’m still only about 80% sure it’s supposed to mean penetration. May 11, 2025 at 2:19 am #305872 TechnopeasantParticipant I think it is more just a general declaration of masculinity. May 11, 2025 at 5:40 am #305876 WarbodogParticipant It seems to be generally internationally regarded as a “fuck you” gesture, if it’s this: Bras d’honneur Probably big in the Czech Republic now. May 11, 2025 at 1:49 pm #305892 International DebrisParticipant I remember seeing it on a couple of other things when I was a so thought it was more common than it probably was. May 11, 2025 at 2:08 pm #305895 Ben SaundersParticipant I don’t think the arm-pumping action symbolises penetration specifically, it’s just a masculine/strength thing. Unless he really was fisting her. May 11, 2025 at 2:20 pm #305897 Flap JackParticipant Fellow Andor: A Star Wars Story enjoyers will have the gesture fresh in their minds because of this guy. He’s a Space Frenchman, so it fits. May 11, 2025 at 5:02 pm #305906 DaveParticipant Fellow Andor: A Star Wars Story enjoyers I did enjoy this season’s mention of the Rimma trade route, followed by an immediate cut to Syril. They know. May 11, 2025 at 5:42 pm #305914 RushyParticipant Do we ever see Rimmer in that vest outside of the flashback? It seems to be his jacket from The End, but with the sleeves cut off January 19, 2026 at 11:48 am #315690 PodeyParticipant Not quite the question I asked, but I have also just remembered I wasn’t allowed to buy the Spitting Image video ‘Havin’ It Off: The Bonker’s Guide‘ which was advertised in the Smegazine. January 19, 2026 at 8:17 pm #315712 MoonlightParticipant I don’t like the way that title rendered. January 19, 2026 at 8:48 pm #315715 PodeyParticipant The perils of copy and pasting a title because you couldn’t remember it and then couldn’t be arsed to type it out. January 19, 2026 at 9:06 pm #315717 MoonlightParticipant Protip: Paste as Plain Text is the solution for situations like this.
