Smegazines – anyone else got them?

About two years ago I came across a few old Smegazines that my brother had bought a while back. I looked through them and wondered if I could get all issues online somewhere. Got them all on ebay was really chuffed, the first issue came signed with craig charles autograph, obviously the previous owner had gone to a convention. So I just wondered if anyone else on the site had them or likes them for that matter? I always liked the gray scale version of rimmer in the comic stories. Some excellent interviews among them too.

I have a load from both volumes (and still in pretty good nick). Some of the interviews are pretty good – as are the retrospective on the “older” episodes. However, the strips don’t particularly interest me (aside from the adaptations of Series One episodes).

Let’s face it; it wasn’t really a magazine. It was a comic.

I’ve got the lot. They’re bloody great.

The strips are hit and miss, but more hit than miss, I think. Conversely to Pete, the episode adaptations don’t really interest me (although, considering that when they were published, series one had never been repeated or released on video, they’d have been great at the time) but there were some great original stories. The Roy of the Rovers/Ace Rimmer crossover was particularly awesome.

Is that the one where he plays in every position? Yeah, I’ll give you that one.

What I liked about the adaptations was that added little extra bits and they were well-drawn (whereas some of the strips…weren’t). I guess they were catering for a fanboy market, but I’m not sure who really wants to read about the further adventures of Jake Bullet.

I liked the comic where the Cat priests sent forward mercenaries to capture Lister and teleport him back to the war ravaged world of the Cat wars. I think Hudzen made a cameo, but it was really just Kryten wearing a helmet. I always thought it would have been cool to see the cargo decks with all the derelict cat homes in the tv series much like Infinty Welcomes Careful Drivers mentioned.

YES. I first discovered this when rooting through Ian’s back issues (oo er), and when our team won a load of issues at the aforementioned quiz, I made sure that was the one I nabbed! The best thing about it is that it was drawn by the actual ROTR artist of the time, Barrie Tomlinson, and had loads of in-jokey references to ROTR itself. If you went picking through my brain to find the ULTIMATE SEB-PLEASING CROSSOVER, that would pretty much be it.

I’d like to read more of the comics, they looked pretty good. I really liked the greyscale Rimmer idea. Still, when I’m a successful comics writer in a few years, I’m totally going to get IDW or someone to pitch to GNP for the license and let me write it. And I’ll see if McKelvie wants to draw it ;-)

True, if he can’t draw cars, he almost certainly can’t draw spaceships. But would his style be that unsuited? I’m not sure what style would be suited or unsuited, frankly, as we’ve barely had any Dwarf comics on which to base a comparison. One thing’s for sure, though – the characters would definitely look like the characters.

But that’s all moot as it really would NEVER HAPPEN. I was just namedropping ;-)

Heh, for some reason my head put everything else in ‘vaguely possible’ box. Stranger things have happened, after all! :)

I guess I just have McKelvie firmly placed drawing modern trendies (not meant in a bad way, obviously…) I know he’s drawn specific famous people in Phonogram, but they were never hugely distinctive so I’m not sure how well the main characters would come out given how they’ll not be his creations but actual real people. And, yeah, spaceships ;)

I want Phonogram 2 right now.

I missed those Smegazines (didn’t even realize they existed until a couple of years back.) It’d be great if those comic strips could be collected together maybe… or even put on-site, like that other nanarchy tie in strp a while back. (No doubt it’s not as simple as that what with all that right malarkey… but one can hope.)

I wish I still had them but in my jetsetting playboy lifestyle some things fell away.

I collected them for a while in the early 90’s, but either they’ve been lost during a house move or they’ve mutated into something indescribable.
I seem to remember they were a bit hit-and-miss.
