But I’ve not heard anyone talk about the game itself yet. I’ve been playing for a couple of days, and I’m really enjoying it. A smart and clever synthesis of the first four games, with a bit of Sonic CD, Sonic 3D and Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine thrown in for good measure. A bit like being 8 years old again!

Sometimes you think you’re a big shot returning to play Sonic 2 on real hardware when suddenly you die like a bitch in the Mystic Cave spike pit.

No, I was running extremely fast and I could’ve sworn that pit came later in the level. As usual, my more casual attempts to not die in a run of 2D Sonic fall victim to some bullshit hazard midway through. Not long ago in Sonic 1 I got knocked onto some spikes by an orbonaut in Labyrinth Zone. I was playing the mobile decomp on PC but I play authentic with no spindash and the spike bug enabled, so I instantly died. It’s always fucking Labyrinth Zone.

Kids these days don’t know the horror of Sonic 1 spikes.

For the record though I made up for my embarrassing death by maintaining almost 140 rings in Metropolis Zone.

So I’ve not played Sonic Frontiers myself, but apparently as part of the new story additions in the latest update, they’ve added a scene suggesting all the egregious random floating platforms, grind rails etc. scattered around the Starfall Islands are actually some sort of Cyber Space induced hallucination of Sonic’s that’s affecting the environment around him. Needless to say, this was the first thing which came to mind:
