    aside from Cassandra. XD

*I really like the visual style. III – VI had this shadowy murky look to it that I never quite gelled with. VIII has a nice saturated colour scheme that’s easy on the eyes.

*Chloe Annett seems to be much more relaxed (and looks nicer with her natural hair). I like the way they play up Kochanski’s eccentricities. Even though she’s isolated from the cast a lot of the time, she still feels like more of a member of the posse than she did in series 7. When I was rewatching Only the Good and saw her going around with a kettle on her head, I actually felt sad at the prospect of losing her.

*The alternate ending to Only the Good, where they do a conga dance and smoke cigars. It felt like a nice coda to all the crap they’d gone through since Back to Reality.

*Lister and Rimmer being chummy. I don’t think it really makes sense from Rimmer’s POV (it’s supposed to be series 1 Rimmer, so you’d think he’d absolutely loathe what’s happening), but Charles and Barrie’s energy is infectious. If it was holo-Rimmer, I’d find it really wholesome. I’m glad the bunkroom scenes came back too.

*Mac McDonald and Norman Lovett. Not their material, per se, but just the comforting familiarity of the actors. Lovett’s Holly was always my favourite character on Red Dwarf, so I can’t help appreciate him when he’s there.

Is Rimmerworld the Star Trek one because it has a teleporter?

Just for some background, we started from ‘The End’, but she hated it so much that I decided to skip to ‘Rimmerworld’ for the most Star Trek-ish episode I could think of, and then she wanted to continue watching from there. So that’s what we’ve done.

Have you explained where Kryten came from? Or that Holly was a woman for a bit? Actually never mind all that, just tell her about the Om song so she’ll at least get the references in Series XII.

She said that she wasn’t entirely comfortable with the notion of a sci-fi sitcom, because she loves the sci-fi genre and isn’t keen on having the piss taken out of it.

So I picked Rimmerworld because it had adventure, a relatively grounded plot and a minimal amount of goofy visual gags. I figured that once she was onboard, she’d be more ok with silliness. Which, given that she has willingly sat through Pete, would seem to be true.

I just said they picked Kryten up along the way, and I haven’t mentioned female Holly at all.

She really liked Norman Lovett in The End, but unlike Mac MacDonald, she had entirely forgotten him by the time he reappeared.

I actually suggested skipping to The Promised Land (I called it “the movie”) during series 8 out of fear that this era might kill any chance of her wanting to continue, but she insisted on continuing in chronological order

I presume she couldn’t wait to go back and watch the episode about the pan-dimensional liquid beast from the Mogidon Cluster.

If they’d only jumped forward to Series II, she’d no doubt have been wondering how much of an episode’s run time would’ve been spent on the ‘using up a whole bog roll in a day’ plot.

The good thing about Red Dwarf is it’s a comedy with a science fiction theme, it’s not a science fiction parody. It’s not Spaceballs. And I certainly don’t think it punches down at other sci-fi.

It’s much easier to not have to pay a TV licence and feel cheated nowadays. The downside is it means there’s no money to make Red Dwarf.

Until I read the dialogue, and realised you meant Lister, I thought this was the most offensive insult I’d ever seen on this forum.
