The first episode I saw ‘new’ was Psirens, but the time that happened I knew Series I-IV as encyclopaedically as a twelve year old can. What was the first episode of Red Dwarf you saw? Sorry, but that?s as shite as My Hero. I absolutely love it. But then, it *is* formula comedy, far more than VI – and I know from your previous posts that you don’t really take to that. I do – if I find the formula funny, I don’t give a fuck. Open All Hours is probably the better and more interesting show, though, although I don’t think it makes me laugh more. You’re probably right. That said, I’m fond of the occasional sketch show (The Fast Show, first series of Little Britain) which are as formulaic as you can get. Maybe I just look for something different in sitcoms. September 7, 2007 at 11:48 pm #124621 daphneParticipant > and My Hero, which, I?m afraid to admit, I actually enjoyed. Get out. No, no…there’s a trick to it. You just mute the sound whenever anyone besides Ardal O’Hanlon is talking. Works like a charm. I feel kind of lucky…my PBS Brit Night shows “Monty Python.” But you have to sit through that “Summer Wine” bollocks. In all actuality, I’ve given up waiting for Saturdays and just watch the British Comedies on Stage 6. They even have “Peep Show” and “The Mighty Boosh!” September 8, 2007 at 3:36 am #124622 AntipodeanParticipant > There?s a certain vibe from what you see first that establishes what you?re seeing as ?This Is How This Thing Is?. Well I actually like Series III to V the most out of all the series’ run and feel that era is “true Red Dwarf”, but I’ve noticed that I seem to like Series VII a lot more than most people. I guess it’s partly true: my first introduction to Red Dwarf was as a comedy-drama (as opposed to a sitcom) so I was more open to the show being taken in that direction, even if it really was a sitcom in its foundation. That may be a reason why Series VIII is my least favourite – I think that if they were trying to go the comedy-drama route they should’ve stuck to it, rather than snap straight back to sitcom. It’s as if the show had a brief moment where it started evolving, and then suddenly diminished.
