DwarfCast 18 – Back to Earth Preview Special

bteprev

What, you didn’t think we’d let the buildup to BTE pass by without an special preview Dwarfcast, did you?

DwarfCasts from Ganymede & TitanWhat, you didn’t think we’d let the buildup to BTE pass by without an special preview Dwarfcast, did you? A VERY SPECIAL Dwarfcast, in fact, as for the first time since Dimension Jump, all but one of the entire G&T team gathered in one place to spout forth our opinions :

DwarfCast 18 – Back to Earth Preview Special (35.9MB)

With only the Northern Art Monkey Danny Stephenson absent, sat around the table we had John Hoare, Ian Symes, Seb Patrick, Jonathan Capps and Tanya Jones, with erstwhile site commenter Karl Eisenhauer and erstwhile person who won’t be watching the specials Julian Hazeldine definitely not lurking in the background. In a break from the usual format of the commentary episodes, there’s a bit less structure to this one, and it runs a bit longer than normal at 40 minutes. But you never know, we might release a special “Xtended” version in the future, featuring an extra ten minutes of John talking about studio audiences.

  1. “are going to congregate at mine and Cappsy’s house”

    Ahem!

  2. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this (only because of the general principle that fanmade podcasts are cringemaking) but I thoroughly did. Nice work :)

  3. G&T Admin

Would ‘Angling Weekly’ lie for weed? We don’t think so…

  4. Enjoyed that, gang. *Really* enjoyed that.

And I’m with Ian – I enjoyed Last Human, too. Reketrebn is one of my favourite characters ever.

And I enjoyed the explicit sex scene with the Kinatowowi. :D

  5. >And I enjoyed the explicit sex scene with the Kinatowowi. :D

I was having sex, having sex, WITH A GRIZZLY BEAR???

  6. Are Seb and Tanya the only sane ones out of all of you? I think so. Then you’ve got Maurice Moss and Keith Lemon there.

Btw I think most comedy shows ‘clip badly’ (and I don’t mean like Rick Rubin-produced records). Look at OFAH, series after series and what are the only two clips they ever show of it? the chandelier smashing and Del falling through the bar. OK and them as Batman and Robin, and the bit where the watch is valued…oh eff off you know what I mean. You’re never gonna sum up a show like OFAH or Dwarf with a couple of quick clips because they’re so character-based (well, GOOD Dwarf is. That’s why I don’t like a lot of the random gags in series’ VI, VII & VIII). Though an episode like Blue is too far the other way, it’s almost embarrassing to watch because there’s very little there for anyone who hasn’t watched the past 6 series’.

Also, thanks a smegging buncharoony for the laughing at the end nearly blowing my fucking speakers out!

  7. Any suggestions as to why my browser won’t play it, techies?

  8. Hmmm… yeah but I MAY have disabled it…

  9. Nah, still not working.

  10. Right click, save as, job’s a good ‘un.

Do people really listen to stuff like this in browsers? Hmm, maybe we should get a flash player of some kind, or something… I dunno, I guess different people have their ways, it’s just never occurred to me to play a podcast in anything other than my media software or portable device…

  11. G&T Admin

    > Do you have quicktime installed?

It’s an MP3, it plays on a toaster.

The only thing I can suggest is to download it, because there’s obviously something wrong with YOUR END.

  12. Yeah, I did that, but it appears to be working now anyways. Seems it was a Java issue :S

  13. > it?s just never occurred to me to play a podcast in anything other than my media software or portable device?

Well normally it wouldn’t, but when you’ve got an mp3 link up people are often gonna left click it and just listen to it there and then.

  14. Now that I have a new mp3 player that has room for more than just brewing podcasts, I am downloading your dwarfcasts. I’ve listened to one and I found it quite good.

  15. You c*nts. Leave in my muffled shout of “69 Dude!”, but edit out the bit where I expose someone’s ill-informed comment about them not having see Cars and therefore space-ships being there only frame of reference. I’m going to get Max Clifford on to you people.

  16. You shouldn’t even have been talking!

  17. Shaddup Cannon!!

It’s not my fault if they lack essential Dwarfy knowledge. I was only trying to save them from embarassing themselves. Besides they’ve got to compete with Scuttercast now don’t forget.

  18. G&T Admin

I don’t think we can compete with them in terms of being embarrassingly ill-informed.

  19. Has anyone heard the band that Clare Grogan was in after she left Red Dwarf? Apparently they were really successful.

  20. > Has anyone heard the band that Clare Grogan was in after she left Red Dwarf? Apparently they were really successful.

    No! Seriously?

  21. There are certain memories of the 80’s that I’d rather forget.
    And it was pre RD.

  22. >And it was pre RD.

    I know that, but Skuttercast don’t ;-)

  23. Oh, wow is there a new episode of that out too?

What a glorious time to be alive.

  24. I enjoyed that – my first Dwarfcast!

Amazed to find that you lot sound almost, well, wholesome.
How on earth did you manage that? Was I listening to Scuttercast by mistake?

  25. Just caught up. Nice job, looking forward to the BTE analysis.

  26. You should do a live DwarfCast on the Monday evening. That would be cool.

  27. G&T Admin

Really glad people enjoyed this one. Thanks!

  28. >You should do a live DwarfCast on the Monday evening. That would be cool.

Or perhaps some sort of live chatroom thing, maybe as a Skype conference call.

  29. G&T Admin

    > Or perhaps some sort of live chatroom thing, maybe as a Skype conference call.

This has been discussed for the future, but I don’t think it’ll be anything we do at Easter.

  30. G&T Admin

The plan is to do a Dwarfcast, straight after each episode has finished, unedited and raw, which will hopefully be uploaded as soon as we’ve done it. I was considering suggesting we do it while it was on, but I’d get really annoyed at people talking over the first viewing.

  31. G&T Admin

There were talks about having a live one after each show, but… well, we need to be able to slag off everyone in the entire universe and then edit it out.

  32. G&T Admin

I can imagine hearing a Dwarfcast consisting of the odd “and”, “the” and “-ing” with a 1000Hz tone throughout.

  33. I don’t think those who are comparing aspects of BtE to League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse are doing so because they think Apocalypse was the “first” major meta-plot. I think it’s just being referenced because it’s an easy, recognizable touchstone. Of course it’s by no means the first, but it’s at least accessible to our collective consciousness.

Also, “OMG, they’re doing their own version of volume seven of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy Gentleman!” doesn’t have the same ring to it.

  34. G&T Admin

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy Gentleman!

I preferred the Adventures of Sir Digby Chicken-Caesar, myself.

  35. One of my least favourite sketches in That Mitchell & Webb Look.

(I was going to just put M&W, but I knew I’d be asking for a Morecambe & Wise ‘misunderstanding’ if I did that.)

  36. > (I was going to just put M&W, but I knew I?d be asking for a Morecambe & Wise ?misunderstanding? if I did that.)

Well the thing is, I like Mitchell & Webb and I like Morcambe & Wise…but which one’s better? There’s only one way to find out – throw them right in the fuckin bin, piece of plastic bollocks, and watch Horne & Corden instead!!

  37. >Well the thing is, I like Mitchell & Webb and I like Morcambe & Wise?but which >one?s better? There?s only one way to find out – throw them right in the fuckin >bin, piece of plastic bollocks, and watch Horne & Corden instead!!

    GET OUT! No… really.

  38. I was considering suggesting we do it while it was on, but I?d get really annoyed at people talking over the first viewing.

Hence my thought of Monday evening when we’ve all seen it once, you’ve had chance to rewatch, make some notes, decide on some discussion points etc.

  39. Will you be making some actual commentaries of the episodes instead of discussions on the episodes at a later date? Maybe to coincide with the DVD release?

  40. G&T Admin

Will you be making some actual commentaries of the episodes instead of discussions on the episodes at a later date?

Make more sense to do commentaries when the DVD has actually come out.

  41. G&T Admin

Or until we’ve let it sink enough to hve coherent opinions on them.

  42. Hence my thought of Monday evening when we?ve all seen it once, you?ve had chance to rewatch, make some notes, decide on some discussion points etc.

On Monday evening I will be ASLEEP. Hell, on Monday afternoon I will be ASLEEP.

  43. Ha ha ha! G&T Staff! Is this part of your bandwidth reduction policy, along with the new twice as big front page?

  44. a) “G&T Staff” is to make it a bit easier to differentiate between official site comment and visitor comment, since there are a lot more commenters around at the moment. You may recall that we’ve had trouble in the past with certain TV presenters blurring the lines between forum comment and actual G&T comment.

    b) New front page makes it easier for people to see what posts older than A DAY are all about considering how much news there’s been recently. It’ll no doubt change back when things slow down.

    c) Yes, both of these things will cause an absolutely tiny increase in bandwidth use for each page visit. But I can’t imagine a few extra bytes making THAT much of a difference, can you?

    d) Of course, there are ways that you yourself could ease the bandwidth strain quite easily…

  45. Course keeping the forum in hard light mode could prove a problem. ;)

    > New front page makes it easier for people to see what posts older than A DAY are all about considering how much news there?s been recently.

    How nice is this?

  46. d) Of course, there are ways that you yourself could ease the bandwidth strain quite easily?

    But that’s no fun…

  47. a) so it’s not an “us & them” situation then ;-)

  48. G&T Admin

In all seriousness, we’ve deliberately avoided adding any kind of indication of who is admin round here before, partly to avoid an “us and them” vibe; in fact, the reason so many features are missing on the forum is to try and avoid the usual kind of forum politics that inevitably happens.

But with the increase in visitors – especially that which is about to come up – we thought it’d be useful.

  49. I can understand the reason behind it, I just thought it was amusing considering this site has always had that policy you describe, John.

Oh, plus d) I did offer you a couple of months of unlimited bandwidth the other day, so it’s not like I haven’t tried to help you out. I know you all still think I’m an idiot, but I just keep it up because it’s expected, really.

  50. Oh, alright, you’ve got us, it’s because we’ve gone mad with power, like that Albert Schweitzer guy.

  51. > partly to avoid an ?us and them? vibe

That and the fact that apart from you lot there were about 3 other people posting.

  52. Oh, alright, you?ve got us, it?s because we?ve gone mad with power, like that Albert Schweitzer guy.

Completely the opposite to what I said, but never mind.

  53. Can I request that the Skype Dwarfcast with forum-member participation is done on the extended cut of Pete?

It’d give everyone a lot more time for discussion, and nobody will have to worry about talking over the best jokes.

  54. Very well done with this Dwarfcast special. It nicely sums up what we have read in the episode summaries and seen with the published photographs, plus it has some intriguing conjectures regarding personal opinion/speculation on the plot. It has the right blend of attitude towards the upcoming episodes, not being too overly positive neither being overtly negative. I really enjoyed listening to your Dwarfcast.

  55. >Can I request that the Skype Dwarfcast with forum-member participation is done on the extended cut of Pete?

If you’re trying to break some sort of record for must uses of the word ‘shit’ in a podcast.

  56. Re: performingmonkey’s comment:

    > Btw I think most comedy shows ?clip badly? (and I don?t mean like Rick Rubin-produced records).

The excellent Mastering Media blog recently had a post discussing why Rubin shouldn’t be blamed for the awful sound quality of the likes of Californication and Death Magnetic. I recommend that blog for all your loudness war needs…

  57. The excellent Mastering Media blog recently had a post discussing why Rubin shouldn?t be blamed for the awful sound quality of the likes of Californication

No, you can blame the Red Hot Chilli Peppers for the awful sound of Californication.

  58. I can’t get this to work

  59. G&T Admin

Shit. Will look into this tomorrow when I stick up the DJXV ‘cast.

  60. Yay! DJcast :-) is that tomorrow as in 4 minutes time or more like 24 hours?
