Craig Charles. The radio. Thursday night/Friday morning (sorry for being a bit slow on the uptake!) After the jump for a transcript stolen from Somebody and an audio clip.

“…the Smegheads are a thing from… em…, it’s from the Red Dwarf days, isn’t it? Which I can now announce – we’re going to be doing two more series of it. Starting in January next year.”

[Production guy, muffled since he clearly doesn’t have a mic, asks something like “Is that like a proper exclusive?”]

“That is an exclusive mate! What d’y’think?”

[Production guy: “That’s pretty impressive.”]

“Gone a bit nervous.”

[Pg: “Were you meant… are you allowed to say that?]

“Emmm… no. But I got the call today and it said ‘Craig, can you do it in January?’ I said ‘Yeah, I’ll sort it out.’ So I will be able to do it in January and… emm… I’m a bit nervous though – I don’t know if I’ll be able to fit into leather trousers anymore.”

Audio clip here.

A few points, then:

  • FUCKiNG YES.
  • When Craig says “starting in January next year” I think we can safely assume he means shooting rather than broadcast.
  • Considering Back to Earth was filming at a similar time in 2009 it’s not entirely unreasonable to assume that Easter next year is a possible broadcast time for the first of these new series.
  • Well, I say “the first of the new series” as if I have a single fucking clue, but the assumption I’m taking from this news is tat it’s one shooting period for two separate series. It seems quite unusual, but given the comments made about Craig’s availability in the past, not a bad idea at all.
  • Will these be two full size (by which I mean at least 6 episodes) or two mini-series? I suspect they’ll be full as other shows (i.e. Doctor Who) shoot 13 or 14 episodes a year because it’s more budget efficient.

So, there we have it. Once again major a announcement has come from one of the cast when it clearly was not supposed to. But, well, it wouldn’t be as fun if it was any different.

In 2011 two new series of Red Dwarf will be shot and, some time later, broadcast. Craig Charles has already confirmed his availability and the rest, you assume, will follow. There’s little else to say at moment except “FUCKING BRILLIANT!” and “bring back Hattie, plz”.

It’s started, everyone. Stay tuned.

  • My guess is that 2 series are being filmed together because of the casts (Craig’s) busy schedules.

One to be shown in April and one in September….I base this guess on nothing other than gut feeling.

  • That sounds like a reasonable assumption. Hopefully, this also means DJ will be happening around the time they finish (or at least close to the end.)

  • Oh, yeah, and it seems this broke on the forum LAST NIGHT. Erm, sorry about the delay.

  • I had a “gut feeling” last year that wouldn’t go away that was saying DJ would hear an announcement of new Red Dwarf. My current “gut feeling” that won’t go away is that the next DJ will have some sort of exclusive showing…..preview?

  • Personally, I want an entire episode to be filmed at DJ with me as the guest star. I really hope this happens.

  • How long does it take to shoot a regular TV series? I’m wondering if it could be two 3 part mini-series ala Back To Earth, that way they could broadcast one at Easter (again) and put one on the shelf for Christmas.

  • Woooo Hoooo! :-) Great news. Will be great to see.

If we are speculating, based on nothing, I say that it will be, One series written by Doug and One series written by Rob, and both are set directly after Back to Earth. That it will air on the bbc on sundays now as the bbc are no longer interested in the kind of audience that Roy Clarke used to attract and so are relocating the boys from Red Dwarf to Holmfirth and hoping for a cross over in ratings from past glorys and the whole dr who and corrie audience shares thing.

  • That sounds plausible that’s it’s a couple of mini series like that. I’d love to be proved wrong and get the 14 episodes made together scenario. Given what Dave did before though and that they dont make a lot of shows, seems more likely something more managable would be forthcoming. I happily await facts. :-) It’s cool that in 6 months something is happening. This wait hardly feels like a wait at all in Dwarf history. :-)

  • I personally don’t like the whole 2x 3 part specials idea.

I hope it’s 2 full series…either 2×6 eps or 2x7eps. Andrew did say there was 6 scripts commissioned with a possibility of more at DJXV.

  • ….comment queued for moderation…..that normally means vanished from existence. I’ll redo it…

I personally don’t like the idea of 2x 3 part specials (but would take that over nothing!!). I would prefer 2 full series…either 6 parters or more. Andrew did say at DJXV that 6 scripts were commissioned with a possibilty of more. Hopefully, public interest has caused Dave to go for 2 full series….

I like this whole speculation based on nothing scene!

  • Tried posting this with links, it got “queued for moderation”, so without the links this time…

Okay okay. All I know is we weren’t meant to say anything yet, but Craigy got an exclusive in. I know virtually nothing, truly 17 minutes ago via TweetDeck

All I know is that we are being sounded out for availability for next January to record series 10. The 2 series thing is news to me. 15 minutes ago via TweetDeck

I have not read any scripts, or even heard from Doug if he has finished writing them. I know Dave are V excited about a new series etc etc. 14 minutes ago via TweetDeck

And what really gives me hope of a leak proof announcement is that even Craig knows nothing about it. Excellent. 13 minutes ago via TweetDeck

I truly know very little and I bet I’ll get jip just for tweeting this, even though Craig blabbed 1st, yeah, on the record. I said nothing!! 9 minutes ago via TweetDeck

  • > One series written by Doug and One series written by Rob

You bastard, I was going to say that.

  • > Sorry, we look what? ;)

    WHERE HAVE THEY GONE?

I hate Drupal 4. Real bad.

  • I know it’s summer, but at moment it feels like christmas to me! wonder how long it will be before Dave/GNP do a press release? i’d imagine before too long that DigitalSpy will get wind of this and the story will continue to get press and then, a statement of some sort will have to be put out.

  • I dunno, GNP are quite good at waiting until they’re ready to release stuff. The sound of it is that they’re still working out the schedule (asking Craig if he’s free, etc) so not enough is confirmed just yet.

  • The 2 series’ comment could mean…

    a) Series X and Series XI shot together, 6 episodes each.

    b) Two BtE-style 3-parters shot together.

    c) Series X shot in Jan/Feb then XI shot at a later date, though both comissioned.

    d) Rachel Riley from Countdown in bed covered with the numbers from the numbers game, I pick two from the top, the rest from anywhere else, then I press the button to see what number we have to work out which turns out to be ‘oh oh oh’…and Red Dwarf and stuff.

  • YYYYYESSSSSSS!

My own completely baseless prediction: one series set before “Back to Earth”, one series set after.

    > bring back Hattie, plz

    I second that.

    > One series written by Doug and One series written by Rob

Bugger that. If both of them do end up writing the new episodes then they have to collaborate. It’s only then that they become a super gestalt entity of writing awesomeness greater than the sum of its parts.

    > I hope it’s 2 full series…either 2×6 eps or 2x7eps.

Or perhaps 1×6 followed by 1×7?

  • EPIC WIN!

My hopes are: A) 2 full series B) Studio Audience and C) Hattie!

Plus, I wouldn’t mind Lister actually being a slob and a scouser again.

  • > Plus, I wouldn’t mind Lister actually being a slob and a scouser again.

He’s still a slob, he admits that at the end of BtE, but there’s no way he should just go back to being exactly like he was, what would be the point? Character development…

  • >He’s still a slob, he admits that at the end of BtE, but there’s no way he should just go back to being exactly like he was, what would be the point? Character development…

Ye I know that, but I just think he looked a bit too ‘clean’ in my opinion. May just be me, I have been watching series 1 and 2 a lot recently.

    >Er, in what way has he not been a Scouser?

Ps be careful what you say here

I didn’t mean any offence, I myself am a scouser and live right by Liverpool’s ground. I just preferred Lister with a stronger scouse accent.

  • Jesus, a discussion on G&T? about red Dwarf? Shame on you all!! :D

    Where to begin…

    Performingmonkey

The 2 series’ comment could mean…

    a) Series X and Series XI shot together, 6 episodes each.

    b) Two BtE-style 3-parters shot together.

    c) Series X shot in Jan/Feb then XI shot at a later date, though both comissioned.

    a) Sounds likely that that will be the case with Craig having to break away from Corrie, I doubt they could/would have him flitting in and out of Corrie’s schedule, because they’re hoarding buggers…

    b) I personally don’t want more ‘specials’. When the news broke out last time, there wasn’t any talk of ‘a new series’ it was specifically stated that they would be a ‘reunion special’, so the fact that ‘series’ has been mentioned, I think we can probably assume that it’ll be fully fledged 6 or 8 episode series-type things.

    c) Is it unusual for two series to be shot in one sitting? I’ve not heard of it been done before. Could be done I suppose.

    Antipodean

My own completely baseless prediction: one series set before “Back to Earth”, one series set after.

Personally, I wouldn’t want that, i’d rather they left the gap between VIII and BTE to be left as is, I like that fact that they leave that open to interpretation. but it’s not like they haven’t done flashbacks before…

    David M

    EPIC WIN!

My hopes are: A) 2 full series B) Studio Audience and C) Hattie!

    A) Obviously, yes.

    B) Definately yes. Would be a dream come true to watch Dwarf as an audience member.

    C) Of course. it’s time for Hattie to return to Red Dwarf. My first memories of Dwarf as with Hattie as Holly so it’s been a long time enough to being her back into it, would be interesting so see a Kochanski/Female Holly dynamic, actually.

  • > I myself am a scouser and live right by Liverpool’s ground

And you resist the urge to burn it to the fucking ground every time you walk past it how, exactly? :P

  • Oooh, we’re all a bit excited, aren’t we?! :-D

So I lose my interwebs for 48 hours and this happens.
    Bloody typical.

  • >And you resist the urge to burn it to the fucking ground every time you walk past it how, exactly? :P

Not a liverpool fan then, ay? :P

Anyway, scousers already have a bad enough reputation for burning stuff down as it is. I like to think am one of the nicer scousers, I just stick to robbing cars!

  • So it’s Series X on Dave according to Rob and it’s two series according to Craig,
And they both state January as possible recording start dates. :-) Interesting.

So it could be 1 or 2 series Norm’s going to miss out on now because of his attitude during BTE.

  • I hope Matt and Dave are really big RD fans, and heard Craig on the radio and got dead excited and jumped for joy on their boat. I like the idea of that. Who knows when we would have first heard about this if they hadn’t sent Craig that email?

  • There’s Craig the ‘reformed drug addict’ again. Some reporters are really irritating aren’t they?

  • > There’s Craig the ‘reformed drug addict’ again. Some reporters are really irritating aren’t they?

The inference is a bit unfair.

  • > There’s Craig the ‘reformed drug addict’ again. Some reporters are really irritating aren’t they?

My girlfriend’s friend is a huge Coronation Street fan but has probably never heard him say anything on the show because she is too busy shouting “Rapist” every time he appears on screen.

  • > My girlfriend’s friend is a huge Coronation Street fan but has probably never heard him say anything on the show because she is too busy shouting “Rapist” every time he appears on screen.

That is *such* a fun game, though.

  • Bet that can be distracting, honestly how long ago was that now? surely time to let that go

  • It’s not as if rap music is that bad…..and I think the correct term is Rapper not Rap-ist

  • I nearly quit a job because someone kept talking about Craig being a rapist. Well, that and the job was really crap.

Sorry, I’ve been away a long time. I’m in Japan so I fail at keeping on top of the RD news! Excitiiiiing!!! I have nothing of value to contribute… *goes back into shell*.

  • I do hope they are in a live studio audience, the only downside with Back to Earth was that cold silence and canned laughter…yuk!

  • There was no canned laughter in Back to Earth.

Unless you’re referring to the ‘fan augmented version’ which to my mind doesn’t count.

  • I think cliff meant “that cold silence. And to have canned laughter? Yuk!” That’s just my interpretation though.
