Keeping it brief, then: on Sunday, I took the site down to do a bit of upgrading. Unfortunately, something went wrong, and when I tried to restore the backup, I had problems. The guy who runs the server very kindly restored his own backup for us, and we were back in business Monday evening. For a few hours. Then, irritatingly, we went offline completely – the whole server went down. Nothing to do with me, guv. Anyway, I tried restoring my backup on the other webspace I’ve got, but I ran into problems – and frankly, it’s easier to set up the temporary blog again rather than fuck around with fixing SQL dumps. (MySQL version differences can suck my big hairy ass.) If the server comes back up by Thursday evening, then I’ll stick the proper site back online; otherwise, you’ll have to wait until Monday (presuming it’s fixed), as I’ll be away at DJ. Rest assured that there’s no data loss, so all your carefully chosen comments such as FUCK and BALLS are preserved. (The backup would be a pain to restore – hence this blog – but not impossible by any means.) And I’ll transfer all the comments here back onto the main site once it’s up and running again. In the meantime, have fun! Or: don’t.
The thing is, all SHIFT-BREAK stuff is on a separate, paid-for server, with guaranteed uptime from the hosting company. G&T is hosted on donated free webspace, with no such guarantee. I take the point that I should have sorted out the problem with restoring backups from last time it happened, though. The thing is, G&T is worked on in my free time, so stuff like that falls by the wayside – instead, I spend the time getting the site updated. Not sensible, but the kind of thing that can easily happen. I admit it doesn?t make me look that good, especially when G&T is part of my portfolio – but there are reasons, and at least it isn?t that I don?t take backups at all. (In fact, there are backups kept at two different locations, including one that?s automatically taken every night, and copied to a machine off-site.) Still, I?ll make sure once the site goes properly back online, that I investigate the MySQL version problem fully, in case this happens again.
Whew! I was worried about all the fucks and balls being lost for posterity. Good to know that all is well. You?re doing a damn fine job, me laddio. Have fun at DJ..and take LOTS of pictures and video!

…and we’re back up. Hooray! No idea exactly what the problem with the server was – just that the whole thing was down – but we’re OK now. Now fuck off.
