Big Suze! Big Suze is here! News Posted by Ian Symes on 18th February 2009, 05:57 Well well well, Sophie Winkleman – best known for her role as Big Suze on Peep Show – has been cast in Back To Earth. No news yet on what sort of character she’s playing, other than that it is a “key role”. I’m sure the rumourmongers will all spunk themselves at the thought that she’s playing Kochanski, but I don’t think that’s terribly likely. We know bugger all else at this stage, other than that she’s been on set since the shoot started on Monday. Marvellous. Of course, Sophie’s been in the news as recently as last Sunday, when it was announced that she’s marrying some minor royal. The timing of this announcement might play to the show’s advantage – not only have they cast a fine young comic actress, but also one that’s in all the papers and being talked about by people who otherwise wouldn’t know who she was. This is certainly an exciting piece of casting, and one that bodes well for the ambition and the scope of these new specials. Elsewhere on Dave’s site, they’ve added their usual Wednesday Dwarfy bonus content. There’s an article all about love, which sadly misses out Camille and Nirvana Crane, but other than that is quite good. There’s also a Cat quiz, which apparently had teething troubles when it first launched, but seems to be alright now. And the best thing is, I made it through the whole article without mentioning how incredibly sexy Sophie Winkleman is.
Is the Love In Space/Cat quiz new for this week? EDIT: Scoring system seems to be working now: 12/12 :-)
Big Suze and future Royal to join cast! http://dave.uktv.co.uk/library/red-dwarf/red-dwarf-news-new-cast-member/ Sophie Winkleman, eh? She’ll do. Is she playing Kochanski? It doesn’t say she isn’t…
Now, that was a suprise (though, as soon as I saw ‘Peep Show’ in the article, the first person to cross my mind was Oliva Colman). The casting of Sophie does raise the question: if they could afford to hire her, then why not…?
Mmm. She’s lovely. For those who made a big deal about our Chloe being a ‘too posh Kochanski’ or ‘not a Lister bird’, this girls even posher. In a very nice way, of course. (That’s not me complaining by the way. Just an observation.) She’s luverlly.
>She is the new Holly. Well, we’ve had Hilly and Holly, maybe she’s Hally, Helly… Hully? …Her hair looks too long for a computer, anyway.
>?Her hair looks too long for a computer, anyway. Hattie’s got quite long for a while. She pulled it off. Not her hair. That would smart a bit.
>?Her hair looks too long for a computer, anyway. Hattie actually mentions this on one of the commentaries – one of the music papers said that about her back when she was on the show – it got a big laugh.
> The casting of Sophie does raise the question: if they could afford to hire her, then why not?? Not really. Since it’s been quoted as saying she plays a “Key role”. It makes sense that you hire that key player and if you have money left over then perhaps you can afford to pay for Norm and an appearance by Holly. It’s not going to be an either/or situation. Disclaimer: I half expect Andrew to pop up, quote this and then explain how it was an either/or situation. Anyway, I already knew about this. I’m on this other forum which recieves exclusive info direct from Dave TV.
>So you engage snigger mode and then tell me to leave the new guy alone? Yes. Your comment WAS funny. Mastering ambivalence is a pain. Makes me look like a dog chewing a toffee. Or something. ;) I wasn’t having a go at you… although I do get the impression newbies are picked on a bit. Never mind.
I wasn?t having a go at you? although I do get the impression newbies are picked on a bit. Only the ones who deserve it. And I mean that sincerely.
> Nirvanah Crane Kurt Cobain You’ve gotta have a system. Hmm. > I wasn?t having a go at you? although I do get the impression newbies are picked on a bit. Never mind. Fair enough. I don’t think of myself as someone that picks on newbies. I moaned at Soundy Objecty because his posts about Who seemed to descend into mindless anti-RTD pap. The bit above… well it’s a laugh ennit? Do newbies get picked on? Ian’s won me around. I don’t really they do. When people say or do something particularly stupid it might get jumped on like a pack of rabid comedy dogs, but then folk learn what is and isn’t acceptable and adapt. If they are brazen enough to keep posting that stuff, that’s up to them. Mr. Bullet seems a friendly enough poster. I hope (and doubt) he was hugely offended.
She definitely has that Kochanski look about her to me. Key role seems to be a loaded phrase…not just a guest star then. Perhaps its not a coincidence that ‘Love In Space’ is the article this week. But then perhaps it is.
Having initially dismissed the concept of Sophie playing Kochanski, I’m now not so sure. It would make sense, as she’s very much like a better version of Chloe Annett. But I don’t know – if she is Kochanski, why isn’t she in the main cast shots? Plus, I don’t know if any sitcom character can stand up to a SECOND recasting, especially one as flimsy as KK.
Er how does key role equate to Kochanski? Even in series 7 and 8 Kochanski’s part wasn’t really a key one.
Er how does key role equate to Kochanski? Even in series 7 and 8 Kochanski?s part wasn?t really a key one. I agree that in practice she had fuck all to do (in VIII at least), but she’s definitely supposed to be a key role. Cat did bugger all in VIII, but he’s still a key role. But on the other hand, “key role” doesn’t necessarily equal Kochanski. She could be the main baddy or something. That would be good.
>Nothing to with Valentine?s Day at the weekend. Last weekend. If it was tied into Valentine’s day, I’d have figured they’d have put it up last week. Couples flowers have died, their chocolates have been eaten, and they’ve returned to a quiet life of bathroom masturbation again by now. >Er how does key role equate to Kochanski? Even in series 7 and 8 Kochanski?s part wasn?t really a key one. Well, if you don’t consider a main cast member (during 7/8) and the series main love interest to be a key role, that’s more down to crappy scripts than anything else. Otherwise you’re saying you think Sophie is going to have a bigger role than Kochanski did in the series, which certainly seems unlikely at this stage in the game.
God I LOVE her! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmyGJC5h4DM If she was Kochanski I don’t see why it wouldn’t have been announced before. She WOULD make the ideal posh Kochanski, even though Sophie’s a lot younger than Kochanski should be at this point (they could just blag that though, seriously would anyone kick up a fuss about it when someone as brilliant as Sophie Winkleman was playing her??) It’s more likely to be a guest character though. For all we know she could be playing a Cat, a descendant of Rimmer, a ship’s computer, a rogue simulant. I doubt she’d be a new love interest for Lister because that would be too similar to Kochanski.
Having initially dismissed the concept of Sophie playing Kochanski, I?m now not so sure. It would make sense, as she?s very much like a better version of Chloe Annett. Yeah, I don’t want to jump to the obvious conclusion, but… well, it fits. But frankly, we don’t know what the fuck to expect out of this production, so it’s probably best not to make assumptions. But if I had to tell you what my gut feeling was over whether or not she was playing KK… I’d be swinging more towards it than away from it, to be honest. Meanwhile, I’m hoping this means that I’ll get to meet the Dwarf cast at her wedding to Lord Freddie. Because obviously she’ll invite her new castmates, and obviously Freddie will remember the tubby goalie he played alongside when guesting for Greyfriars Hall, Oxford in a magnificent 13-3 defeat (in which he scored, if I recall correctly, two out of the three goals) to Oriel College Third XI in late 2001, and decide to drop him a quick invite as well. Obviously.
Oh, and I am very pleased that she’s in it, but not as pleased (since monkey posted that link) as I would have been if it were Catherine Shepherd.
>I don?t think of myself as someone that picks on newbies. Oh, I didn’t mean just you personally. But no, compared to some sites, this one is pretty easy on the newcomers (although it does stamp on mistakes quite hard sometimes, but that goes for oldies too.) Apologies for my generalization there… Anyhow, enough of that. Onto the serious stuff: But I don?t know – if she is Kochanski, why isn?t she in the main cast shots? Maybe just because of the very fact she is new. I.e. they makes sure the first pictures are of the lads we know, and then feed us a tidbit at a time. On the other hand it seems fairly certain she wasn’t in the scenes at the Corrie shoot (or they did a great job of hiding her…) so it’s probably just a case of picture/announce them when they turn up available. This makes me wonder if something happens to Kochanski as it’s likely some of the ship scenes will be set before the Corrie stuff. Of course if she goes early then her role wouldn’t be as major as Dave suggests. Depending on how much of the episodes the VII resolution takes of course.
> Well, if you don?t consider a main cast member (during 7/8) and the series main love interest to be a key role, that?s more down to crappy scripts than anything else. Well I’m considering ‘Back to Earth’ as one story, Therefore to me a ‘key role’ is one pivital to that story. Namely the chief good guy(s) or bad guy. The key dynamic in Red Dwarf is the Lister/Rimmer one with Kryten usually pushing the story on with exposition. The Holly, Cat and Kochanski roles (when Rimmer is present) are peripheral. I don’t consider the ‘love interest’ key because it was iconic rather than realised during 1-6. The only time the personality of Kochanski becomes particularly important is 7. She’s pretty forgettable in 8. > Otherwise you?re saying you think Sophie is going to have a bigger role than Kochanski did in the series, which certainly seems unlikely at this stage in the game. Why would it? What I mean is the ‘guest star’ in almost all previous episodes has been more essential to each episodes story than Cat usually is. That’s not me being disrespectful to Danny. That’s just how I’d judge a character’s importance. For example, Cassandra would still be more or less story minus Cat (actually you can’t say the same for Kochanski on that one), The key to Legion is Legion, Hildigard Lanstrom’s brief appearance is more important to Quarentine than Holly… infact where the bloody hell does Holly get to in Quarentine? Maybe it is Kochanski, but unless Kochanski actually does something important this time around then I still wouldn’t think her character was ‘key’ anything.
never seen this woman in anything just hoping we dont see more of her than the main 4 boys from the dwarf ..wouldent suprise me if its kochanski but as others have said its probky more likely to be a goodie baddie for this special
I know very little of Sophie, but she does seem a very attractive young lady.. Perhaps it’s my age but I still prefer Chloe and think she’s a good actress. If Sophie is the ‘new/alternative’ Kochanski and who knows, alternative time-dimension etc, it could be for a number of reasons. Chloe kind of dropped out for family reasons and you have to admire that, maybe she’s not interested in returning for all we know at this stage. I doubt she’d return for financial reasons given her family background and husband. There’s certainly a lot of talking points coming out, Mmmarvelous.
>just hoping we dont see more of her than the main 4 boys from the dwarf You wouldn’t be saying that if you’d seen her.
>I know very little of Sophie, but she does seem a very attractive young lady.. I’ve seen her in quite a few things. Without actively seeking her out either, she seems to be doing the rounds lately, particularly in comedy. (She had a small role in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe as adult Susan too.) >She?s undeniably beautiful, but I?d be surprised if her range goes beyond ?posh crumpet?. Heh. Actually everything I’ve seen her in she played that role. She is very posh, but not in a snobbish way. She does what she does well. As for the age, yeah, I wondered about that too. Not that that has stopped people in the past. Which is a shame in some ways. When 2018 Catherine Connor* is younger than 1994 version you can understand why some actresses feel a tad jaded. Still, I look forward to seeing Winkleman’s role. She could be doing something completely different. *John Connor’s wife in Terminator:Salvation
>She had a small role in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe as adult Susan too Big Suze. Call her by her name.
“Rimmer is to be played by David Mitchell, and Lister by Robert Webb.” EDIT: Ahem. Let’s get it the right way round…
Hmm, while her playing Kochanski would fit, I just don’t think recasting a major character for 2 (now 3) episodes would be a wise move. We’ll just have to wait and see though!
>Hmm, while her playing Kochanski would fit, I just don?t think recasting a major character for 2 (now 3) episodes would be a wise move. I’d pick a recast as the lesser of two evils against Lister returning to Earth without Kochanski.
To me, it depends… if this story has Lister finally returning to Earth for good and wraps up Red Dwarf, then it would be nice to give him his Kochanski happy ending. However, as hints are being dropped for more Dwarf goodness in the future, I have a feeling the status quo (stasis quo?) will be returned by the end of the specials, or at least a brand new one established for future possibilities. Therefore, no real need for Kochanski to even be in them.
If Doug still has designs on making the bloody movie, then Chloe Annett’s apparent departure leaves a hole in the obligatory “gorgeous female” department that she was hired to fill in the first place… one glorious hole that would quite nicely be filled by Ms Winkleman.
Oh dear. Talking abut Sophie Winkleman and filling a glorious hole in the same sentence has made me come over peculiar.
Which I wouldn’t usually mention, except Peculiar is my cat, and have you ever tried to get that stuff out of fur? I’ll be here all night now, dammit.
Oh dear. Talking abut Sophie Winkleman and filling a glorious hole in the same sentence has made me come over peculiar. Who is this Peculiar, and how did they react?
I dunno the second the sound of female names graces Red Dwarf news the comments get worse then programmes commissioned by Channel 5!
dont know if this has already been mentioned bobbys twitter today “Just recorded Kryten monologue for You Tube. It’s not on yet. Will post it this weekend. Early finish for me today “
Cool news – I wonder whether we can in some way glean from this YouTube video whether to expect Kryten or Mr Wacky Robot in Back To Earth…
> Topical AND funny. Well done. Thank you, I do try my best! EDIT: Ooooh I take it we’re getting a Wet Liberal Kryten like promised.

I called that yesterday… I just didn’t post it on here. I saw the picture and thought… hmm.. could be a female Cat! Fact.
>Too slow neandercarl? too slow for this Cat! But another couple of, er, cats beat you too! They’re cheetahs! That’s it. Cheetahs. Fastest land animal dontcha know. ;}
Here’s one: http://www.ganymede.tv/atspeed/2009/02/so-how-about-that-wednesday-dave-update-eh#comment-142785
> You?re all wrong. It?s McGruder. Sickbags on standby. > WHAT IF? She?s a female Cat? I could totally live with that.
One of the Cats that left on the ark thing. She is gorgeous I must say, and as a cat… that just seems quite sexy to me.
> If she is a female cat, I sure hope they come up with a half decent explanation for why she exists Well surely all the cats on Earth evolved over the 3 million years too? Assuming, of course, that they don’t travel back in time to get to Earth or anything like that then it’s entirely plausible that there would be Felis Sapiens on Earth!
> that they don?t travel back in time to get to Earth or anything like that then it?s entirely plausible that there would be Felis Sapiens on Earth! That’s what I thought would happen in the movie. Personally I reckon we’re gonna see Earth in present day AND 3 million years in the future. Though the Corrie thing surely has to be present day. Unless it’s a hallucination of some kind or an AR program, OR (and this is what I REALLY think it will be, I’m betting you ?5) it’s a sort of 3 million years from now museum dedicated to Corrie, with Simon Gregson playing an android version of Steve McDonald. That’s what it WILL be.
> It?s a sort of 3 million years from now museum dedicated to Corrie, with Simon Gregson playing an android version of Steve McDonald. That?s what it WILL be. Oh my God. Genius. I’m really hoping it is that now!
>it?s a sort of 3 million years from now museum dedicated to Corrie, with Simon Gregson playing an android version of Steve McDonald. That?s what it WILL be. *applauds*
>Well surely all the cats on Earth evolved over the 3 million years too? Not necessarily. The cats might have only evolved into humanoid form on Red Dwarf. Evolution can depend a lot on environmental factors. Life could have been wiped out on Earth. Cats could have evolved into completely different creatures altogether, or not at all. Of course, it is possible that the remaining Ark found earth. I think it would be interesting to catch up with those cats in future, but I’m not keen on the specials covering that. (Although Winkleman would make a good Cat.)
What If…. Its all lies. What If…. Red Dwarf was NEVER 3 million years from earth… JMC got holly to say that also to keep lister sane? Ad some alterations to dates here and there… that could be plausable.
What If?. Its all lies. What If?. Red Dwarf was NEVER 3 million years from earth? JMC got holly to say that also to keep lister sane? Ad some alterations to dates here and there? that could be plausable. … but even if they were never ORIGINALLY 3 million years from earth, the fact that they BELIEVED they were was enough for them to use the time drive to jump three million years from where they’d jumped back to (first to “deep space in the middle of the fifteenth century”, and then to Dallas). So if they weren’t to start with, they probably are “now”. Also, when they met Kryten, it probably would have come up in conversation – and if they weren’t, he’d probably have set them straight. OH GOD YOU’VE MADE ME OVERTHINK THIS.
Oh, also, in series eight, thingy whatserface says to Hollister something about the rumours about them being three million years away from Earth. OH GOD STOPPIT STOPPIT
lol.. nah that why i said about altering dates and times. Like It could all of been bollocks… Holly re-programmed kryten via bluetooth connection to say he was made years after lister and rimmer we’re involved in the accident… etc etc. Good point abou the Dallas thing though. Ofcourse, this would be like a ‘JJ Abrams’ thing to do. Thank GOD Doug is writing this. Im still sticking to my Cat theory.
Just twittered: >Will be able to deliver loads of news about Red Dwarf soon, but not yet. Found out loads of things today, but I have to watch my big gob The one thing I can confirm is that there will be a Kryten vid on You Tube in the next couple of weeks. A totally exclusive little clip too
