At the third time of asking, Dimension Jump 20201 is finally here! The twenty-first Official Red Dwarf Fan Club convention today returns after an enforced absence to the Nottingham Crown Plaza for the fourth consecutive event, and it will feel all the more special after the long, long wait since October 2018. It will be a slightly unusual occasion in many ways. Twice postponed due to Covid, for many attendees this will be their biggest social gathering for some time; there’s bound to be mixed feelings along the way, but let’s hope the abiding memory will be the extremely happy one we’re accustomed to from past experience.

On a personal note, it’ll be the first DJ since 2007 that none of the current G&T staff are working at, and thus all the offers of drinks and chats that we’ve been too busy to accept over the previous six events can finally be cashed in. Two of our trio are giving it a miss, still suffering from PTSD from their time on the team, but one brave reporter is prepared to throw himself back into the fray for you, so we’ll be reporting on events as best we can over on Twitter – handle is @ganymedetitan, as you should know by now after twelve yeeeeears.

And we’ll be joined by Danny John-Jules, Hattie Hayridge, Norman Lovett, Rob Grant, Paul Jackson, Ray Fearon, Lee Cornes, Ian Boldsworth, Matthew Clark, Chris Barrie and Robert Llewellyn (those last two via Zoom), along with a super secret mystery guest which isn’t at all obvious from the silhouette and caption. See you back here next week for the traditional post-DJ DwarfCast.

    Read: since the last DJ.

Sorry to hear the trio is just a… one-o… this year. I was looking forward to seeing those two again.

  • Hang on, I think I’ve worked out who the surprise guest is. “Tickled pink”? It’s a blatant clue, isn’t it? Blatant!

    It’s Dick Bush.

  • Oh, apologies for my bad timing. I see now that you tweeted out the reveal of who the surprise guest is 2 minutes before I commented.

    Turns out I was wrong.

I hope the DJ attendees aren’t too disappointed.

  • Hi Si Hi Ian. Good to see you. Miss you Cappsy.

Who is the mystery guest? And when is he coming?

I had a great first night guys, funny opening ceremony. I came fifth in yet another cool but hard quiz. So didn’t quite win the newly named Seb Patrick diligence and devotion trophy. What a nice touch. Hattie never seems to age. Even through lockdowns. What a great quiz host.

Then some gushing drunken bloke from Benidorm I think we was, wandered in and tried to take someone’s room key and then pay another attendee to shit in the first guys bed. Before telling us all how he loved the episode polymock and the whole show so deeply before getting the whole room to sing American pie so the bicycle tire he had in his throat didn’t ruin all the lyrics. Who was he? The caretaker? He bid up the auction for the starbug instrument panel and I’m worried he may have eaten the head of the mutton vindaloo beast thats on display upstairs.

Dimension jump continues to offer the most unique nights a fan could ever dream in any unreality pocket.

  • Quite sad that Doug isn’t there for “obvious reasons” isn’t it. Wonder if there’ll be any news on that from Rob.

I’m assuming the obvious reasons are the fight for control of the IP which seems to be a thing, and not just Doug not fancying the covid risk of an event.

  • Reading the update from Doug. it all makes me kinda nervous. i shouldn’t be nervous because new Red Dwarf content should be a good thing. but i think Dougs experimental mind seems to have no limits when it comes to what you can make this show into. and i dunno if thats a good thing.

Yeah, that special doesn’t sound good to me. It does sound cheaper to make than normal Red Dwarf though, fewer special/sci-fi effects, which may be a large consideration, but I’m not sure I want a feature length Corrie bit from BtE.

“Doug also mentioned that there are still plans for a Red Dwarf stage show at the O2; that he’s written a new 90-minute special called Out of the Red featuring the Red Dwarf cast as versions of themselves; he’s working on the next Red Dwarf special. #DJXXI”

If that’s versions of Cat Lister Rimmer Kryten, then I rescind my earlier comment. When I read it earlier I read it as crew playing versions of themselves working on a new special.

If it’s Dimension Jump style, Spanners, Padre etc then that’s fine and might be fun, given the relative popularity of the alternate versions in Skipper.

If it’s versions of the cast, like a version of Robert Llewellyn that makes a Top Gear style car show called KillerWATT etc etc. then nah.

  • I assumed from that description that it was the actors playing versions of themselves too.

So is Out Of The Red some sort of non-Dwarf Dwarf that sidesteps legal issues around Doug making new Dwarf? I can’t think of any other reason to make that concept the next 90-minute special.

Hopefully it’s a joke or a misunderstanding or something.

  • he’s written a new 90-minute special called Out of the Red featuring the Red Dwarf cast as versions of themselves; he’s working on the next Red Dwarf special

Sounds like Out of the Red isn’t considered ‘Red Dwarf,’ since ‘the next Red Dwarf special’ is coming after. Just an optional extra like Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg or The Five Doctors Reboot (but very long). Maybe it took up one of the planned Red Dwarf blocks and was an easier thing to do in current circumstances, but we don’t have to worry about it being weird.

  • Excessive, indulgent, niche, hopefully funny. A story with the 4+ of them interacting could only really be about them making some Red Dwarf. Larry Sanders style Red Dwarf?

  • It might be funny, but would it be Red Dwarf?

I like the sci-fi sitcom personally, Smeg Your Enthusiasm sounds like it’d be a really good Blu-ray extra, but I’m not sure I’d take it over some proper Red Dwarf if proper Red Dwarf was a possibility.

  • First thought i had was this was Doug’s way of spiting Rob and Co. There is nothing legally stopping him using the Cast playing versions of themselves and referencing the show. whatever is going on behind the scenes wouldn’t be able to stop him doing something like that right?

  • Great to hear from Doug Naylor at Dimension Jump about new Red Dwarf and more. Very excited.

As well as writing the next Red Dwarf TV special, he continues to work on a live Red Dwarf show for nights at London’s 02 arena.

Of course the ongoing legal things & the pandemic are issues to resolve things around when it comes to being able to continue these Red Dwarf ideas and when. (And as we know from GNP side Paul Jackson said at Holly Hop in Feb contracts for more TV dwarf existed and included Doug. And also that Rob wants to write somethings)

Doug was tactful as were Chris & Danny in their QnA’s too. Doug had a positive spin, saying little on that side, Chris enthused a little about a good script he had seen and Danny made an honest reflection about the difficulties of double acts comparing grant naylor creators to the showbiz winters brothers!

And then Doug said the next thing will be a TV special called “Out of the Red” which will be the cast as themselves and sounds like a fictional comedy drama about them involved in global conspiracy or something. This seems yet again a very creative extra route to take from Doug at this time. For both reasons of rights and cast available timings, turnaround during pandemic and budgetary
Things. While it all probably delayed dwarf I also feel like it’s a bonus way to go and refreshing idea.

Then fourthly he is writing a separate sci-fi comedy drama as well. I feel a wide smile to know he’s busy on four creative projects like this. All of which I would love to see happen. Its made my weekend to hear it.

This seemed to show he is very creative right now. And while there is always such a long wait for things to appear in Dwarf Land. & Sometimes never. I feel a forward joy that my love of all these guys and the show is going see more happening.

    Here’s to the future.

  • Hopefully it’s a joke or a misunderstanding or something.

It’s only just occurred to me that Out Of The Red might be a sly reference to the GNP financial shenanigans that supposedly left Doug massively out of pocket.

Out of the Red part 1. Doug finds financial solvency, and to celebrate takes a heap of viagra and shags everyone he sees.

  • Danny made an honest reflection about the difficulties of double acts comparing grant naylor creators to the showbiz winters brothers!

    Paul Alexander was Doug’s Schnorbitz.

  • So… the hopes for a spin-off midquel of The End starring Mac McDonald and Robert Bathurst, “I’ll Be Frank With You”, are looking slim? That’s a shame.

  • Is it true that Rob said he was interested to write a new Red Dwarf Novel but couldn’t at the moment because of all the legal issues?

  • I saw that. Presumably he could if he wanted to, because GNP own the rights and he is a Director. But I’d imagine it’d be pretty bad form to go ahead and it whilst there’s lingering legal stuff to sort out.

  • There might be something stopping him publishing a novel right now, but there’s nothing stopping Rob Grant writing a novel. Same as the last 25 years.

  • There certainly isn’t anything stopping him, unless Rob Grant is one of those “writing is my job, I’m not just going to write a full novel on the mere chance of payment” divas.

  • There certainly isn’t anything stopping him, unless Rob Grant is one of those “writing is my job, I’m not just going to write a full novel on the mere chance of payment” divas.

Or maybe he’d just rather put his energies into projects that he can be fairly confident will see the light of day. That seems pretty reasonable.

  • Well he was gainfully employed to do that up until recently. And if Paul’s comments earlier in the year are anything to go by, he is still contracted to have written more Red Dwarf.

Also, if you’re looking to get TV etc made, you have to have a script of sorts for people to read. With book writing (for established authors anyway) you might have outlines, but you don’t always have it ready to send to a publisher, you’ll write it once they agree to put it out.

And if Last Human is anything to go by, you can wait until minutes before it’s due to be sent to the printers.

  • I think Doug was typing it right into the printing machine and it was coming out in real time.
