A few weeks ago we put out an experimental crossword to see how it would go down, and we were delighted with the response. 241 people gave it their best shot and 66 of them completed it which, given some of the clues drew some ire, are pretty good numbers. So, we’re back with another quick crossword in a similar style with a UK inspired layout and non-cryptic clues more in the style of the New York Times. Have fun, and don’t forget to let us know your final time and scores as we predict a few more people will be able to complete this one.

  • This was a bit easier than the last one! I got 5 minutes 56 seconds.

26D stumped me for a while as I was thinking of the wrong kind of course, and 20A only clicked when I had a couple of letters in place.

I also spelled 11A wrong at first because of the episode!

  • 310, 40:48

Had to trial and error for some of it, but the clues always made sense before I finished them. Very enjoyable!

  • Stuck on a few still, I think this is quite a bit harder because some of the clues are much less specific than the last time!

  • Done in 15:57

A few are tricky because they relate to bloody awful episodes! :)

Which is only fair and balanced obviously…

  • 1 left to go. Got a couple with some guesswork

23 or 24 down seem wrong to me – shouldn’t it be “Rimmer or Kryten”?

Oh god, you’re right. None of us spotted that!

  • Your score 310
You completed the puzzle in 18 minutes, 52 seconds.

Paused it and stepped away for a few minutes and got those last two fairly quickly

Very fun, well done again team

  • 12:28 – although I had to guess some letters in 11A before it twigged, and I’d never have worked out 8D without the Smegadrive.

Found both crosswords very fun, although definitely a lot less reliance on the Check button this time round. I also find the pattern of Hs in this one pleasing.

  • 310 here as well

Have to say I’m very much enjoying these crosswords, I very rarely bother with them normally but slapping a Dwarf theme on there has got my solving juices flowing!

  • Yeah, the score looks like it’s bollocks. I think it must be just scoring you based on words, which obviously means if you solve it you get the same the score as everyone else!

  • I got 325 in 13:15, don’t know how the score works. Didn’t use any clues, but changed some answers as it went along when the first guess didn’t fit any more.

  • After 17 minutes, I’m left with:

11 The type of equipment a seeding ship may have (12)

and the first 3 letters of 13 “Choccie” confection removed without payment. Though I can infuriatingly picture the scene and much of the dialogue.

If only there was a way to easy search the shows dialogue.

  • 310 and 29:50, though I forgot you could pause it but that would only have knocked literally 2 mins off.

Much less guessing with the check function this time but I did have to Google for 4 or 5 of them. Another 5 or so clicked once I had half the letters in place from where other answers intersected.

23 and 24D were great fun, very clever, and I really liked the wording of 19A and 29A.

    Thanks guys!

    26D stumped me for a while . . .

  • I was surprised to do this one so fast but the answers were mostly stuff that was in my mind and retrievable, and I didn’t have to brute-force any of them. I always think with crosswords that if you get on a roll early on then the other answers fall into place quite quickly.

  • 310, 14:28.

20 and 27 across completely stumped me for ages, as did 23 and 24 down. I was so annoyed when I realised how simple they were.

  • If only there was a way to easy search the shows dialogue.

Rather negates the whole challenge aspect if I look the answers up

Think of it as an aid to memory. Helps you master the facts already in your command.

  • First time round, I did it on my phone. Just had to do it on my laptop, and was, for some unfathomable reason, much quicker. Just over four and a half minutes (there were still a couple that didn’t immediately spring to mind) and 460 points.

  • My only guess about the score is that it starts with a certain number, then deducts points for time/incorrect guesses, but can’t go below a certain number?

  • Shame mode. The only way I am going to complete this is by googling about a third of the answers and that’s cheating. I shall definitely revise more before the next one. But first I will need to create a revision timetable.

I don’t consider it cheating. If you can’t finish a crossword based on your own knowledge then finding out the answers is much more useful than just leaving it unfinished.

I say this as someone who’s managed to legitimately finish a crossword on my own without checks or looking things up about 3 times, and I try one almost every day.

I DID IT! and with no googling. But the last 6 or 7 clues were done basically as hangman rather than as a crossword… and I of course scored 310 in about 20 minutes.

  • I do cryptic crosswords with my nephew and there are at least 2 words in every 3 crosswords that I have never come across or have never heard in a specific context.

By the way, there will be cryptic G&T Crosswords in the future if I have anything to do with it. :)

  • I’m just commenting because I only joined today and I can’t seem to post in the forums, meaning I can’t post a post in the forums complaining about not being able to post in the forums, and nobody’s responded to my emails. Is that normal? Cause I feel like there ought to be a notification or a welcome post or something about that if that’s the case.

  • I’ve not seen any emails from you that you might’ve sent in the few hours since you signed up. I’m afraid the welcoming marching band is off today but I’ve approved your account to post comments and the forum now.
