As I cannot be bothered to buy it however, this could be problematic. May 18, 2008 at 11:42 pm #80489 RadParticipant It’s a pretty average film. Good, not great. May 19, 2008 at 12:31 am #80492 PhilParticipant Better than I’d originally thought it’d be. I was impressed overall…a few moments of “ugh” dialogue but otherwise not bad at all. I’m trying to work up some excitement for Dark Knight…and this movie at least has convinced me that the next one will be worth my time. May 19, 2008 at 12:59 pm #80504 NakrophileParticipant I remember it being pretty good although there is a bit where he is swinging underneath a train track or something near the end that is a bit silly. May 19, 2008 at 1:22 pm #80505 AndrewParticipant I don’t find the conclusion silly, it’s just a little perfunctory – the kind of climax everybody does. Which is only a shame because for 90 minutes the film had been rich, intelligent, smartly performed and cleverly structured. The finale was just ‘fine’…hurt slightly because Nolan is still figuring out how to shoot and cut action. If Dark Knight improves on the last-act and action-cutting problems, and maintains its character and story work, it’ll be a strong contender for best of the summer. May 19, 2008 at 11:16 pm #80512 pfmParticipant I think Nolan did a good job with balancing the two sides of the film -the ‘serious’ side (which was sorely needed if Batman was gonna return to the big screen with any pride after the…abomination that is Batman & Robin) and the cheesy one-liner side (‘nice coat’) including the mental Batmobile rooftop action. However, with The Dark Knight I hope he’s found a way of merging the two together into a more coherent film. Whether studio interference played any part at all, the ending of Begins should have been on a smaller more personal scale to compliment the opening. Instead we get a smattering of clumsy street-level action (the bit with the Scarecrow on the horse…remind me again why that was in there?), the monorail thing that felt out of place, and that fucking microwave device that for some reason doesn’t affect PEOPLE even though they are made mostly of water! May 19, 2008 at 11:31 pm #80513 AndrewParticipant > the bit with the Scarecrow on the horse?remind me again why that was in there? I think you’re totally wrong about this. It’s exactly the kind of insane imagery that belongs in this universe. ‘The lunatics have taken over’. The horror/hallucination version was a powerful image, too. There are police horses, there are nutters…works for me. But yeah, the final act smacks of a reassurance to the studio. As, for that matter, does the Batpod this time. But I’ll still take those concessions over the first two X-Men flicks and their Cerebro-based guff. And I’d take either of those flicks, which are at least TRYING to be interesting within the framework, over a dozen Elektras. The finale was just ?fine??hurt slightly because Nolan is still figuring out how to shoot and cut action. What really hurts the Bat-Begins finale for me isn’t so much that – it’s the fact that Batman effectively LOSES (all he does is reduce the scale of the disaster, not avert it), but from then on it’s treated as a victory [bar a swift line or two in the very last scene]. Didn’t Gordon get a lungful of the fear-gas steam? Didn’t about a quarter of Gotham (not just the Narrows)? It’s dealt with as if everything after the house fire was pretty much wrapped up cleanly. May 22, 2008 at 1:38 am #80590 AndrewParticipant > Didn?t Gordon get a lungful of the fear-gas steam? Didn?t about a quarter of Gotham (not just the Narrows)? I need to watch it again, but I thought it ended up confined mostly to the Narrows, never reaching the main supply, with Gordon fine (or cured, Lucius having had time to work on a quantity of antidote). But, in truth, that’s a fan problem rather than a film one – it’s not an issue 95% of the audience came away feeling. You have to deal with the major script problems first, and the shift in tone and style (genre, really) jarred more than any logistic issue. May 22, 2008 at 6:05 am #80594 TheLeenParticipant In Batman Begins, Batman was a beginner. He was allowed to “only” reduce the scale of the disaster. Hey, that’s quite an achievement for average Joe! May 22, 2008 at 6:13 am #80596 peas_and_cornParticipant mmm, certainly. IN fact, I prefer superhero movies when they point out that the lone hero can’t change everything! May 23, 2008 at 1:14 am #80625 pfmParticipant I wish I knew how to quit you. May 23, 2008 at 2:27 pm #80634 Tarka DalParticipant Damn you all. I got quite excited seeing this thread. A chance to waffle on about how glorious BB is. However it appears Andrew has stolen all my opinions. One point that’s not been mentioned is that the success of ‘Begins has started a bit of a trend for re-starting franchises. Superman Returns was in many ways a retread of the original Superman movie and Casino Royale may as well have been called Bond Begins. May 23, 2008 at 2:41 pm #80635 AndrewParticipant > and Casino Royale may as well have been called Bond Begins. Already stole that one, too: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/4349218.stm#brosnan :-) May 23, 2008 at 3:02 pm #80636 TheLeenParticipant “Star Trek Begins” comes to mind and also “Star Wars has already begun” May 23, 2008 at 6:41 pm #80637 pfmParticipant I hope it’s better than Indy 4. My eyes and ears are still bleeding from seeing it yesterday. Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf are good, yes, but there’s not enough interaction between them, particularly at the end. It surprised me that I wanted to see more of that side of proceedings as opposed to more action and supernatural stuff. Maybe that’s because the plot and script are a piece of shit. Good god, the dialogue in some places… and remind me again why John Hurt, Jim Broadbent and Ray Winstone are in this? All three are wasted. July 4, 2008 at 11:57 am #82033 ChrisMParticipant First five minutes of The Dark Knight Dodgy quality. Not too much of a spoiler, more an introduction to the Joker.
