Apologies if you already have me “friended” on Twitter or LiveJournal or Facebook or anywhere else I might have blathered on about this, but I have something exciting to try and persuade you all to buy, so I’m going to do it here as well. Issue #183 of Spectacular Spider-Man, a UK-based kids’ comic published by Panini (under license from Marvel, they run original rather than reprinted stories) features as its main strip an 11-page story called “The Amazing Spider-Boy”. This story was plotted by none other than… yours truly. I won a competition to pitch a story idea to the comic, and subsequently fleshed it out into a full-on synopsis which the comic’s devastatingly talented scripter/artist team turned into a rather lovely strip. It comes out tomorrow, Thursday 19th March, and is out for three weeks. As well as in some comic shops (although not all, as it’s not a “direct market” title), you can find it in most good newsagents and supermarkets. WH Smiths, Tesco and Waitrose are three places that I know definitely tend to stock it. It costs the princely sum of £2, which shouldn’t stretch the pocket too much even in these harsh economic times. I can understand if you’re not interested in comics in the slightest, but it is a completely standalone and very accessible story – it’s aimed at roughly seven-to-eleven-year olds, but without being particularly dumbed down or anything like that. Basically, it’s kind of great. The cover image looks like this : … although with associated indicia and so on it’s probably easier to find out if you look out for the below logo (but not MY FACE, that won’t be on the shelves of your local Smiths) : … and as you can see, you get a free webshooter toy with it. So, yes. If anyone would like to buy it and tell me what they think, I’d be most grateful. It’s hopefully not going to be the last thing I do for them, but a good reception for it would probably increase my chances on that front! I also have a comic story in the works – been working on it for about two years now. I’ll be sure to pick up a copy of yours when I see it. March 18, 2009 at 2:41 pm #94112 Ian SymesKeymaster I’m going to get it, but only for the free webshooter. March 18, 2009 at 2:44 pm #94114 PhilParticipant Wow man, congrats on this. I’ll keep an eye out for it, in my mainly comic-free small town. March 18, 2009 at 2:59 pm #94116 Seb PatrickKeymaster >I?m going to get it, but only for the free webshooter. Make sure you buy two, so you get one for each wrist! March 18, 2009 at 3:13 pm #94117 siParticipant I started doing a strip for Better Than Life in about 2003, which featured the Doctor – way before the new series had been announced. Still haven’t finished it. Could do, I suppose, for the new Fan Club mag. March 18, 2009 at 4:59 pm #94119 TheLeenParticipant Massively looking forward to reading it. March 18, 2009 at 5:54 pm #94122 hummingbirdParticipant Huge congrats, Seb. March 18, 2009 at 5:57 pm #94123 ChrisMParticipant Interesting. I might just have a look for that too. I’ve written scripts I hope to publish with 2000 AD (at least a couple of the better ones.) Basically to prove yourself as a writer you have to write a synopsis and five page story with a twist, science fiction or horror. They call them Future Shocks, Terror Tales or Time Twisters depending on what they’re about. I’ve written about 3 and a bit now. Four if you include one which grew into a 10 page monstrosity. (I’ll obviously have to prune that if I’m going to send it in, but it’s a bit rubbish so I might just leave it. Confining complete stories to 5 pages is rather difficult for me.) I’ve yet to send anything in though. I’m a big chicken at heart. March 18, 2009 at 6:09 pm #94126 Seb PatrickKeymaster Yeah, I’ve been working on some Future Shock ideas, but they’re not easy to come up with without seeming hackneyed or “done before”. I’m working on some spec scripts for the Spidey people now, so that potential avenue’s gone on the backburner a little, particularly since it’s so competitive (basically every aspiring writer or artist in the country knows it’s the best “way in”, so everyone tries it!) I’ve been getting to know a few people in and around the London scene, so I’m basically trying to use that as a bit of a springboard as well. Have you read the list of “things not to do with your future shock submission” or whatever it’s called that’s floating around the net? Well worth a look, if only to ensure you don’t accidentally send something in that’s going to make them never want to use you again ;-) I’ll see if I can dig out the link, if you’ve not. You’ve reminded me, though, actually – I need to get round to doing that G&T piece about Alan Moore’s Time Twister that was basically “Backwards” only done… like… better… March 18, 2009 at 6:26 pm #94129 ChrisMParticipant >Have you read the list of ?things not to do with your future shock submission? I think I’ve seen something like that. I’m a member of a writer-droids mailing list on yahoo (actually I haven’t visited that in a while) and I think one of them posted something on that. The idea that earlier ideas might prevent them reading later submissions is part of what worries me. From a couple of the feedback letters I’ve read (kindly posted by other ‘droids’) they do give each submission consideration, which is hopeful… if true. Of course if they dislike the synopsis they won’t read the main strip. I know what you mean concerning repetition though. I’m not sure it’s possible to come up with something truly original any more. Sometimes Futurequake will publish those that aren’t accepted. Being a fanzine, I don’t think you get paid, but it’s one way to get your work out there. March 18, 2009 at 6:46 pm #94132 Pete Part ThreeParticipant That’s really quite impressive, Seb. I’m not a comics fan, but I’ll certainly look out for it. March 18, 2009 at 9:12 pm #94136 RidleyParticipant Did Gomez do the interiors, who scripted, and will this be collected? Hobgoblin is faberoo. March 19, 2009 at 12:45 am #94168 Ben PaddonParticipant Are any of you going to the UK Web & Mini Comix Thing on Saturday 28th? I’m in the US so I obviously can’t pick up a copy now, but if someone were to pick it up for me and give it to me at the con I’d be very grateful. And I’d give you the two quid, obviously. March 19, 2009 at 8:39 am #94177 Seb PatrickKeymaster Ben : Yup, I’ll be at the Web & Mini Comix thing, although the issue’s out for 3 weeks so you should have no trouble finding it when you are in the UK! But yeah, I can probably pick one up and sling it your way while stopping by to pick up Jump Leads… Ridley : Yup, Carlos Gomez is the penciller, with Gary Erskine (Gary Erskine! Famous! Has worked on Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis and Mark Millar comics!) on inks. It was scripted by Ferg Handley, who is FUCKING BRILLIANT. March 19, 2009 at 8:40 am #94178 Seb PatrickKeymaster (and no, it’s unlikely to be collected – it’s just Panini’s own title, so it’s not a Marvel US thing – although it did have to get approved by them, which was EXCITING in itself – and I don’t think they do compilations of their own stuff. So it’s basically the next three weeks or never! ;-) ) March 19, 2009 at 11:02 am #94184 siParticipant Been out (yes! Me! On my own! For only the second time since January!) and bought your comic this morning – very impressed – well done! March 19, 2009 at 1:48 pm #94197 PhilParticipant >it?s not a Marvel US thing Am I out of luck finding it then? March 19, 2009 at 1:53 pm #94198 Seb PatrickKeymaster Mos’ probably. I can’t imagine US comic shops importing it (although bigger ones *might*, though even then it probably wouldn’t be for a while). Drop me an email and I might be able to sort something out, though. March 19, 2009 at 3:22 pm #94210 Ian SymesKeymaster I thought the artwork was fantastic, and the script itself was amazing. Unfortunately, the storyline really let it down. March 19, 2009 at 8:56 pm #94239 Ben PaddonParticipant I may snag a few copies, actually. I have a friend who works for Marvel animation over here, I could give her a copy. Edit: Oh, and I’m blogging about it on both BenPaddon.com and Jump-Leads.com March 19, 2009 at 8:56 pm #94240 PhilParticipant >Drop me an email and I might be able to sort something out, though. I probably would have had to do this anyway; no good comic shops for miles and miles. I’d definitely like a copy, though. I’ll shoot you a message on Facebook. March 20, 2009 at 8:17 am #94273 Mr FlibbleParticipant Sorry – just to clarify – if I wish to purchase said comic, I *am* looking in the comic section at the newsagents and not at Forbidden Planet, aren’t I? March 20, 2009 at 9:04 am #94278 Seb PatrickKeymaster Yup! FP might also have it (I know the London one does), but you’re more likely to find it in newsagents than in specialist comic shops, which are usually too busy trying to sell US direct market stuff to be concerned with such trifling matters as British kids’ comics. March 20, 2009 at 12:40 pm #94292 Mr FlibbleParticipant Cool. I’ll have a look over the weekend then. March 23, 2009 at 12:36 pm #94444 Mr FlibbleParticipant Dear Mr Patrick, Today I bought your comic from my local ASDA store which does not have any special cover SFX’s. Firstly, nice story, although I do wonder where the word “doofus” on page 5 came from. But aside from the chasing super heroes about, I think we’ve all been there. The art was also brilliant (especially the colouring in the classroom bit), although I realise that’s nothing to do with you. I am, however, disappointed to see that your magazine will be going up to ?2.50 as of the next issue. This is a somewhat inflation busting price rise, only mildly tempered by the free multi-blaster and target. Further more, I am disappointed that the “Web Shooter” you advertised on the front of your magazine does not, in fact, shoot webs but rather little plastic darts. Although this will no doubt keep our cats amused for some while, I do feel somewhat cheated that I will not be able to recreate my favourite scenes from the “Spider-man” Movie, such as stopping runaway trains. March 23, 2009 at 1:59 pm #94447 Seb PatrickKeymaster >although I do wonder where the word ?doofus? on page 5 came from. That’ll be the scripter Mr Ferg Handley, there ;-) I’d have loved to have scripted it, and I think I threw a couple of vague line suggestions into the synopsis, but yeah… the detail’s mostly his. Next time, though… Author Replies Viewing 26 replies - 1 through 26 (of 26 total) Scroll to top • Scroll to Recent Forum Posts You must be logged in to reply to this topic.
