Andy Serkis is ace in this film, out now. You dont have to know much about Ian Dury to enjoy the movie. As it tells his story to anyone new to the disabled punk icon. The film is 30% like punk band films from the 80’s such as Madness’ Take it or leave it or sex pistols movies, it’s 30% like Walk the Line the Johnny Cash film it’s 30% like 24 hour party people the factory records film, and it’s 10% like a scooby doo cartoon.

I was an extra in the music scene’s in this. I’m in the crowd scene, 1.11 into this breakfast tv clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urIvMaFdFAg

Serkis never took the leg caliper off during the three days we saw him filming the stage numbers in Watford last year, the dedication to working out on one of his legs
only to cause an inbalance seen only briefly in the film, is just crazy detail to go through in characterisation. There are laughs, music, drama, shock, and plenty of entertainment in this.

Good film. Serkis is indeed incredible. If it were a film that the Americans would be likely to give anything like a shit about, he’d get the Oscar for certain. As it is, he won’t even get nominated.

What really got me was how accurately he got the singing voice…

    Bizarre Question:

Does the Blockheads drummer do much swimming?

My friend’s boyfriend was cast as the drummer and then subsequently asked if he could swim, he said no and the part was recast. He’s still in the film in a different part though, because they can’t fire you if they didn’t stipulate swimming as a requirement when they hired you.

There are a number of scenes set in and around a swimming pool; but aside from the fact that Baxter played drums with the Blockheads for a while (years after the events of the film), I can’t even remember specific reference to the drummer, nor indeed any of the band members aside from Ian, Chaz and Davey Payne… so perhaps it’s just that he needed to be around the pool at particular times, and they weren’t insured for someone who couldn’t swim?

I figured it would be something like that. In his situation, I would have lied.

Swimming being the cause of Ian Dury catching polio, there are a number of scene’s related to swimming in the film, for both him and his son they use being underwater as a theme of danger, trouble, being out of your depth in life, and conquering your fears. There is a scene during Hit Me With Your Rythm Stick where the band are seen playing underwater, and while I cant remember if the drummer is seen underwater, it’s probably because of the planning at least of that scene needed everyone to be swimmers strong enough to perform underwater. They spent a whole day of the shoot in a swimming pool creating those parts of the film shortly before moving to the watford gig scene theatre filming.
