Hm, another show that I’ve never seen. I’ll certainly watch the first episode in English AND German, if they really boradcast the dubbed version on telly here in the end. The dubbing might just totally kill any humour, too. I think it’s easier to translate and dub American humour than British. Maybe because we have a lot more experience with American tv series and films. Or maybe due to the nature of the humour. You can’t preserve anything accent-based, and other aspects of British humour seem… almost too subtle to carry over. Also, cynical comments are just funnier in English than German. Oh God, Blackadder in German was *so bad*.

Of course, just because Pro7Sat1 bought all eight series doesn’t mean they’re actually going to broadcast any (or all) of it – see Doctor Who or the *cough* iTeam/IT Crow. In general, many people think that Pro7 is (or used to be?) a great tv channel for teh movies, but is general shit with series (… and promoting, err, NOT promoting them) and Sat1 is even worse in that aspect.

But we will see! Thanks for letting me know, I’ll keep an eye on the tv schedule :)

Actually, since one of the characters depends on you getting that he can’t speak French properly, leading to amusing mispronouncations in English, I think Marleen may have a point here. Captain Bertorelli and Liutenant Gruber should work ok, though, and the waitresses should work in nearly any culture – with the exception of militant Islam, maybe.

No, I did. My point was that Allo Allo isn’t known for being subtle. I really should have italicised the “haven’t”.

I’ve just thought; ProSieben need to show it properly, really, as it’s a tightly-plotted serial farce, and if they muck around with too much, you’ll probably find it a bit confusing!

So is this just a dubbing of the episode or will it be remake like Das iTeam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vum37p8Ey74)?

    Dubbed version, they say.

It’s a lot more common than the re-creation thing.

    ‘Allo ‘Allo is largely awful.

But I do enjoy its piss-taking of all nationalities.

‘Allo ‘Allo is a fine example of farce. Feel free to give some more of your opinions so that I can disagree with them.

?Allo ?Allo is quality! And I think you would hard pressed to come up with a Series that has spanned that amount of time and STILL kept it funny, and if you say Friends, I’ll kill you with my little tank… Jimbo, you don’t like anything!

Actually, I will agree that in concept Allo Allo is funny.

The conceit that everyone’s speaking French and poorly spoken French sounds like broken English in a bizarre accent is genius.

I also like its irreverance for pretty much all sides of the conflict.

Aside from that, the seaside postcard-style willies and bums and titties and amusingly-shaped sausages humour isn’t something I enjoy.

So the painting wasn’t your thing then?

They really did harp on about that didn’t they…

I liked Allo Allo though. Actually despite the subject matter it’s not especially cruel to the Germans… it just takes the mick out of everyone (English folken very much included), and all with an affectionate tone. Even taking kinky gestapo into consideration…

Ah yes, “The Fallen Madonna With The Big Boobies” by Van Klomp

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fallen_Madonna

The copy that Mad Lord Bath had hung up eventually had to be taken down ‘cos so many people were stopping to admire it that it was blocking the corridor and no-one could get through.

‘Allo ‘Allo is excellent. Herr Flick, answering the telephone:

“Flick, the Gestapo? No, I said Flick, the Gestapo?”

The pilot – shot as an actual pilot, 18 months before the first series – is one of the best comedy pilots I’ve ever seen. Amazingly well-formed.

‘Allo ‘ Allo is actually available in Germany on DVD. The Dub is a straight dub, no accents altered. Shame. What a great show though.

Amazon.de only lists the UK imports?

Also, yeah, at least British accents would be lost in a German dubbing – we can’t just replace them with random German local accents (?). A French accent would work though.

Bloody hell. That’d destroy at least half of the comedy…

I can be exceedingly thick and only found out that was the concept when they did that Special a while back… sigh.

This is how we made the dubbing:

The british talk with british accents
    The french with french accent
Bertorelli talks a great macho italian style
Germans talk “normal” german (sometimes more prussian military style, more gay or a fussy nazi stlye)
Grabtree talks weird german (using similar sounding words) with a british accent.

Are you from the production team? It sounds like a reasonable translation, anyway.
