Especially loving the discussion about the infamous “yobbo” edit on Apocalypse.

staying on the Rik theme, I’m watching my way through a box set of New Statesman right now, and I’m not sure what I think of it. The writing and ideas are great in terms of the different ways of political corruption he gets involved with, but the timing often seems slow and off in ways that dampen the humor.

Rik Mayall is an icon to me (still can’t get over his death to be honest) and I love pretty much everything he did but I have struggled with The New Statesman myself. Maybe I’m unfairly comparing it to more contemporary political satire, but it didn’t make me laugh in the way I thought it would.

I watched New Statesman last year and thought it was insane and nuts. I also just watched Mr Jolly Lives Next Door for the first time. I consider Bottom to be better than Shakespeare so I will listen in.

Everyone should check out Rik’s pre-Young Ones Kevin Turvey monologues if you haven’t already. I had the video as a teenager and pretty much memorised it verbatim through repeat viewings. Someone’s uploaded that VHS to YouTube for want of a DVD:

    “Kevin’s ‘ear’.”

Imagine watching Mr. Jolly for the first time. Amazing isn’t it!
Dirty Movie is a corker, too. “Isn’t it, Joan!?… Sorry, ‘June.'”
