He mentions the weather, tanks, and his dislike of people requesting his appearance on podcasts; but he also included this tidbit on future Red Dwarf and Brittas Empire:

“At the risk of repeating something I seem to have said many times over the last umpteen years, I simply do not know if/when we will be doing more Red Dwarf. Over the winter of 2015/16 when we made series 11 and 12, some common sense momentum seemed to be building, but, since then, the project seems to have juddered to a halt. In the desert of silence I do encounter the occasional droplet of positivity but that’s it. If the droplet ever becomes a trickle, I shall of course leap to the keyboard and let you know.

The Brittas position is not dissimilar. Since the promising newspaper articles of a couple of years ago and the enthusiasm of the Reunion last year, it all seems to have gone all quiet on the Whitbury front. All I can do is continue to express my desire to recreate the chainsaw voiced ogre and that is something I shall certainly keep doing.”

Thanks to Chris Barrie Fans for making this known on Twitter.

I love the fact that this thread has caused multiple people to make accounts here. Fucking outstanding. OP of this thread should be proud.

I enjoyed being the center of attention for positive reasons for once in my life, at least before the weirdos who want to debate but can’t be bothered to take a stance invaded the thread. Still a good thread but that did ruin it very slightly for me.

The organic evolution of the jokes has been a joy to behold.  (They’re making Chris Barrie’s horrendous decline almost bearable.)

And no joke can possibly have outstayed its welcome whilst multiple members are still enjoying it :D

I wonder what’s going on behind the scenes with him, I want to be the spider under the table when/if he goes on crazy tangents. That stuff is always hilarious when you are on the other side of the screen

Thankfully his wife seems to share in his delusions. So…that’s kinda cool, I guess? At least it’s not hell on earth to share a life with him?

Nice to see that Chris has refreshed his January update with a list of personal appearances, but has still kept the Insane Wokery rant up top, above all that. Priorities.

Nice of him to give us the heads-up to expect continued ranting.  I’m in two minds whether keeping an eye on the descent is worth it.

Surprising number of Barrie apologists/supporters over on the Escape Pod Facebook group, but then I suppose that’s Facebook for you

    #281733

I don’t think it’s even remotely surprising. It is Facebook, after all.

I guess I just generally assume that fans of RD would be generally more progressive and /or left leaning that your average Facebook arsehole as that’s the position the show and the creators generally adopt

    #281747

Yeah but they’re Facebook normie fans. The people who think the smeg toaster is the pinnacle of humour and saying anything remotely critical of the show is punishable by stoning. These are the the people who are solely responsible for Series VIII remaining in circulation.

To be fair, Escape Pod was founded specifically to avoid those kind of obvious, repetitive “oh look, a Smeg toaster” type posts, and I think overall its membership are on board with that goal.

When it comes to defending Chris Barrie, I think it’s that a lot of people consider themselves liberal, but resort to denial when upholding those beliefs would mean having to acknowledge being in opposition to something or someone they’re a fan of.

Memes that are harshly critical of the government tend to do really well there, and so do ones which are making fun of Chris Barrie. It’s just that when you escalate from “lol, he’s saying such weird things!” to “no, but seriously he’s become a racist”, that complicates people’s feelings about the very topic they’re there for. Some just can’t separate the stars of Red Dwarf with their own love of the show.

Hey, real quick, can I disturb our regularly scheduled programing to talk about a Red dwarf nightmare I had last night? If it helps it was actually really scary and weird

Hells yeah, so here’s how it went

I’m in the live audience for a new Red Dwarf special, and I’m excited as all heck. But the set is static so nothing changes, people just move around what’s already there, and whats there is the la brea tar pits. I’ve been to broadway shows so it isnt really that different, owever within the first few minutes of the first act Craig Charles falls into one of the oil pits. It isn’t boiling, but it’s really hot. The rest of the cast acts like nothing happened and keep acting around him, it takes two hours for him to die. I’m the only one in the audience to notice. The show never slows down or stops.

What does it mean? I don’t know but it’s made me REALLY anxious ever since lmao

So, how is everyone’s Monday going?

    Dark…

Although I’m not sure why you instinctively felt like this was the right thread to post it. It was just a dream about seeing something horrible happening with one of the Red Dwarf cast in public, and knowing that if nobody intervenes it will definitely ruin the show, but because it’s happening so slowly and it’s so bizarre that people are doubting if it’s really happening, the rest of the cast and crew and most of the audience ignore it and carry on as if everything’s normal, until eventually it’s too late.

I am kind of curious what the plot was for this new special and if any last-minute changes and ad-libs had to be included to account for Craig’s unfortunate change of circumstances. Like do they just react like he’s there or just give his lines to other members of the cast? Or was Craig shouting his lines from the tar pit?

    #281785

So the set was like a stage show, sets would move behind them so no one would have to leave the stage. There was a huge hole in the center of the stage over the oil pit and Craig tripped over a low bar on he floor, if it was for safety it failed lmao

The rest of the cast would say something, and if it was Craig’s line they would all stand still and wait a few beats before continuing (he screamed the whole time). Everytime I yelled out if anyone was going to help him or do something the audience would laugh harder and the cast would scream their lines. I’m gonna hunker down and write it all out in that other thread cause it was such a weird nightmare…

Why was the episode 3+ hours? Why was I hermetically sealed to the chair? Why was the plot so forgettable that all I could focus on was Craig being cooked to death? Why was THIS my first dream about a TV show and what is my psyche trying to tell me

I didn’t realise you meant hot cooking oil, I was visualising hot … well, more like a pit of hot tar actually.  Something like Armus’ home planet from Star Trek.

Uh oh, Craig’s hosting a UFO panel. Definitely not gross the way Chris’s rhetoric is, but ufology is easily one of the most intellectually bankrupt fields of “study” there is with absolutely zero standards for what counts as evidence and an intense resistance to any explanation that isn’t aggressively fringe. Stuff like the famous version of the Roswell story was invented by a SINGLE AUTHOR DECADES LATER, which is incredibly easy to find out yet they still treat this fictional retelling as gospel to this day.

I’ll spare you another 2K word post on the subject but rest assured I could make one.

I’ll just give you a quick rant about how the Bermuda Triangle is 100% fictional. The idea that there is anything mysterious is nonsense. The whole concept was invented by a single author (paranormal author Charles Berlitz) exaggerating a couple accounts of missing planes from years past. However, there are statistically no more ships or planes lost in that area than any similarly sized patch of ocean. Period.

Armchair skeptics tried to explain this supposed mystery without checking to make sure that there was any mystery that needed to be explained, and you got ridiculous theories about giant methane bubbles eating ships and knocking planes out of the air and other stuff that’s genuinely not much less ridiculous than the fringe idea it’s attempting to explain away. Before trying to explain a mysterious event, make sure the event actually happened at all, and if it did, that it actually happened as described. Paranormal stories almost always fail this test. And the whole “invented by a single author exaggerating accounts from decades ago” thing is a pattern with paranormal shit, especially famous ghost stories.
