I’ve been working my way through all of the Doctor Who novels, novellas, novelisations, and other things beginning with ‘novel’, and have, I think, finally come across a Red Dwarf reference (it’s possible there are others I’ve forgotten).

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the book is written by Robert Perry and Mike Tucker, he of Making Stuff For Red Dwarf fame. The novel, Storm Harvest, features a character who has written a book called ‘Androgum Cookery for Novices: How to Master the Boomerang Spoon’.
It’s possible that Mike Tucker came up with the name Boomerang Spoon without any relation to his working on Red Dwarf, but I also think it’s exceptionally unlikely.

I’ll make sure to keep you all updated should I find more as the journey continues. Perry and Tucker wrote a series of four books as a sort of unofficial season 26b, between the end of the TV version and the beginning of the Virgin New Adventures novels, so I’m quite a long way in now. The only other thing that may be of note here is that one of the books – can’t remember which right now – pretty much canonised Blackadder the Third in the Whoniverse.

Lance Parkin’s excellent Eighth Doctor novel Trading Futures

The rifle muzzle flashed, just as the Doctor fired the pistol. Two seconds later, Cosgrove, the Doctor and Malady were all still alive, which surprised her. The Doctor fired again. The first time, Malady had thought she’d imagined it, but she saw it again: a smear of a spark in the air between them and the helicopter. Cosgrove fired, so did the Doctor. The third time, the third spark, and Malady realised what the Doctor was doing. He was shooting Cosgrove’s bullets out of the air.

“The creature twisted its long neck around; from somewhere behind its back it plucked a sign, which read: ‘D-D-Don’t Shoot!’”

The Crooked World. By Steve Lyons, of course.

Eleventh Doctor novel Night of the Humans has a colony that’s mythologised its origins around their crashed cargo ship’s corporate logo and western movies.

“And Wyturp, brother of Gobo, waited for the servants of the Bad, who had come to Oh-Kaykrall to destroy him…. And to this day Gobo looks down upon creation from His tower, and the people of this Earth wait for the day of His return, when He shall take them to the land of El Paso.”

Although the influence is more likely Star Trek, or real life, since

    Touched by an Angel:

‘When you were the Rory over there,’ the Doctor indicated Rory, ‘and your future self turned up, what did we do next?’

Sneaky bit of self-promo here, but I’ve just started a YouTube series covering the Who novels and will absolutely be pointing out every Doctor Dwarf reference, in case anyone wants to watch:

    Borrowed Time (really good)

Amy grabbed the Doctor’s hand and dragged him towards the little park with the fountain where she and Rory had-had / were-having lunch four-days-ago / right-now.

“We’ll come back for them later, Rory. Or, hmm, actually I think I’ve dealt with them earlier. Later. I will have dealt with them earlier later already.”

    Eighth Doctor Adventures: Genocide

He was lying on the floor sniffing at a small, diamond-shaped book with pages stained purple and pale yellow. Sam couldn’t see any writing as such, and eventually decided that the colour patterns must constitute words. Or… maybe it was the smell? She looked around again, observed the librarian more carefully. Yes – he was tasting the book.

Jacqueline Rayner’s EarthWorld (Eighth Doctor Adventures) has a Waxworld-style (or Westworld-style) robot theme park with dinosaurs and historical figures in their assigned zones and a droid Elvis as a supporting character, mind swaps, and the phrase “bitch queen from hell.”

I introduced Doctor Dwarf into the series in the latest video. Also in case anybody missed this and wants to subscribe, I’ll be doing more videos in the coming months – maybe once a week – as I’ve finished making all my other video series now.
