And as for the third – how many lines can you get on a man’s face? I know foreshortening (I think that’s the term) is well used device in comics but that isn’t er, well used. The standard of artists on the IDW books has been pretty variable (Pia Guerra’s probably the best they’ve had, but even she only ended up doing a couple of issues of The Forgotten), but he’s probably one of the best names they’ve managed to get. Clarity of storytelling and character expression are far more important traits in comics artwork than simply doing a “realistic” version of an existing character – but it’s a struggle that licensed comics often have to face, where fans of the original property grumble if it’s not photo-realistic. (and despite your snarky “American Comic Books” comment, Davison is from Coventry, and writer Tony Lee is a Londoner. So there.) July 11, 2009 at 12:13 pm #101054 siParticipant Sorry. I actually really want these american Who comics, despite not being a fan of US comics (I just don’t have the patience), and I’ve seen some of the other ones (and attempted to buy them, with no luck), and the art has been really good. It’s just that, no matter how great an artist he is, some of the likenesses of David Tennant in this particular strip are awful (that top panel is actually pretty good). I know he’s probably had to work to deadlines – that’s one of the reasons I never pursued my own drawing as a possible career, because I lose, well, interest I suppose. Then I end up rushing it, and it comes out shit. I really don’t doubt his talent – you don’t get into art as a profession if you’re no good at it – I just think some of the panels above are…not so good. (Please don’t have a go at me – I went and bought your Spiderman comic especially) July 11, 2009 at 1:18 pm #101056 Kris ‘Drivaaar’ CarterParticipant Yay! Dr Who comic love. Looking forward to reading this. I’ve provided colours for IDW’s Forgotten mini series (and the recently released Dr Who: Autopia, and the upcoming Room With A Deja Vu, and Cold Blooded War), but I’ve not had a chance to look at this one yet. As for the likeness stuff, the BBC aren’t super picky about likenesses, but on the other comics we were told to go back and redo some bits (stuff like the wrong number of buttons on the Doctor’s suit, adding pin stripes, that kind of stuff).
